The magic of Avery.
Located at the west side of the Bitterroot Mountains, the isolated railroad town of Avery was the end of the Rocky Mountain Division and western end of electrification. Diesels took over west bound trains. Only a couple of years previous this was known as the "the gap" between here and the Coast Division electrification beginning at Othello,WA.
Train #263 continues on to the coast while the EF-4's are sitting beside the engine house. Another set is inside the house getting some TLC.

This is a mural Avery drew on the Playroom wall--a more difficult challenge than on paper! I'm not sure if she was completely finished with her highlight and detail work but she had school and couldn't stay. Avery is 14 years old.
Avery County, North Carolina was named after Colonel Waightstill Avery. He was from the Parish of Ipplepen in Devonshire, England.
So the story goes:
In 1778 when Andrew Jackson was young, Col. Avery an avowed Presbyterian and a Puritan, accepted a challenge to fight a duel. This was in accordance with the ethics of the times. In a criminal case before the court of Jonesboro, Avery had been severe in his comments upon some of the legal positions taken by Andrew Jackson. Jackson wrote a challenge and gave it to his critic. The combatants met and a shot fired from each pistol well above the heads of the respective adversaries settled the matter and put everyone in a jocular mood. The two men left the ground very good friends.
At “We’re Here!” we are visiting Old and Characteristic Buildings.
My topic is The 1879 Avery House in Fort Collins, Colorado. Franklin and Sara Avery built the home with sandstone from local quarries. It now serves as a museum honoring life in Northern Colorado at the turn of the 20th century.

While spending most of our time in the swamps and lakes of Louisiana, we took a drive to Avery Island, home to Tabasco Sauce. There are magnificent Oak trees in their very large park which gave us a couple of hours of entertainment. I particularly like this one as the “bones” of the Oak show through the entanglement with a backdrop of orange bamboo beneath. (Sony a1, 70-200 f/4 @ f/11, 88mm, 2 seconds, ISO 100)
Burlington Northern (ex SP&S) Alco C636 4363 is seen on the point of train X-05 at Avery, WA on the Fallbridge Sub in 1977.

This is one of my favorite mountains around Crested Butte. The land is so wide open between the peaks. Avery Peak always stands out with it's pinkish tones.
I'm hanging out with three of my granddaughters. This is Avery's latest drawing. She is 14 years old. Her next drawing will be of two cats and I can't wait to see what she comes up with!

Thought to have been built around 1320 by a local chieftain of the O’Neill clan, but named after Harry Avery (Henry Aimbreidh) O’Neill, a local chief who died in 1392, this structure is considered unusual in that Irish chieftains of the time rarely built stone castles.
