Todays challenge on Photochallenge.org was Automobile, but with the following note;

This time, let’s try something a little abstract. Since we’ve shot an auto before, I want to see you push your self just a bit more. Let me see some artistic processing, or abstract framing, or a unique view of an auto we’ve never seen before.

of course for me being an utter nutter for reflections had to look for a shot with some city reflection which I got here, then I played around a bit in processing tried quite a few things so not sure exactly what I did but kind of like the result I got so here it is

The De Tomaso Mangusta is a sports car from Italian automobile manufacturer De Tomaso produced between 1967 and 1971.

The Mangusta replaced the Vallelunga model, on which its chassis was based. The word "mangusta" is Italian for "mongoose", an animal that can kill cobras. It was rumored that the car was so named because De Tomaso had some talks with Carroll Shelby to replace the Shelby Cobra with a racing car to be built in Italy by the Argentine-born De Tomaso ("De Tomaso Sport 5000 " a.k.a. "De Tomaso P70"), but no deal was signed since Shelby became involved in the Ford GT40 racing program. Nevertheless, Alejandro de Tomaso and Carroll Shelby were friends and business is business, so it is also rumored that the first handful of engines for the Mangusta may have come from Shelby. The Mangusta was replaced by the much cheaper-to-build De Tomaso Pantera in 1971.

401 Mangustas were built, about 150 of the European version, the remainder were the North American version. The initial cars are claimed to have a more powerful Ford HiPo 289 cu. in. engine; the later cars all had Ford 302 engines. With the 1970 model USA destined cars were produced with 2 headlamp pop-up, an estimated 50 cars were produced in this configuration. One car was built with a Chevrolet engine for General Motors-Vice President, Bill Mitchell. There are reported to be approximately 250 of the 401 cars left in existence, according to the three available registries.

LaSalle was an American brand of luxury automobiles manufactured and marketed by General Motors' Cadillac division from 1927 through 1940. Alfred P. Sloan developed the concept for LaSalle and certain other General Motors' marques in order to fill pricing gaps he perceived in the General Motors product portfolio. Sloan created LaSalle as a companion marque for Cadillac. LaSalle automobiles were manufactured by Cadillac, but were priced lower than Cadillac-branded automobiles and were marketed as the second-most prestigious marque in the General Motors portfolio.

Like Cadillac, the LaSalle brand name was based on that of a French explorer, René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle.

ENGLISH

Egeskov Castle (Danish: Egeskov Slot) is located near Kværndrup, in the south of the island of Funen, Denmark. The castle is Europe's best preserved Renaissance water castle.

Egeskov was first mentioned in 1405. The castle structure was erected by Frands Brockenhuus in 1554.

Due to the troubles caused by the civil war known as the Count's Feud (Danish: Grevens fejde), general civil unrest, and a civil war introducing the Protestant Reformation, most Danish noblemen built their homes as fortifications. The castle is constructed on oaken piles and located in a small lake with a maximum depth of 5 metres (16 ft). Originally, the only access was by means of a drawbridge. According to legend, it took an entire forest of oak trees to build the foundation, hence the name Egeskov (oak forest).

Outside, the castle is a Late Gothic building. Inside the original elements already show Renaissance design.

The castle consists of two long buildings connected by a thick double wall, allowing defenders to abandon one house and continue fighting from the other. The double wall is over one meter thick and contains secret staircases and a well. Defenders were able to attack an enemy's flanks from the two round corner towers. Other medieval defences include artillery ports, scalding holes and arrow slits. The bricks composing the castle are of an oversized medieval type sometimes called "monks bricks". The conical towers are constructed in a series of separate panels.

The architecture includes depressed and round-arched windows, round-arched blank arcading within the gables, and a double string course between the high cellar and the ground floor. The structure contains some of the early indoor plumbing design first used in Europe with vertical shafts for waste. The thick double wall also contains a water well which is accessed from the servants kitchen in the east house. Several of the large rooms have massive parallel exposed beams with some end carving.

Contents of the castle include a massive iron chest from at least as early as the 16th century, which derived from Hvedholm Castle, a property earlier owned by the Egeskov estate about ten kilometers to the west.

Numerous oil paintings are found within the castle including a large painting in the great hall on the first floor of Niels Juel, who defeated the Swedish force in the Battle of Køge Bay in the year 1677.

Other buildings belonging to Egeskov include Ladegården, a thatched half-timbered building which is now part of the museum. Other buildings are used by the museum and for farming. Surrounding the castle is an old park, covering 20 hectares (49 acres) of land. The park is divided into a number of gardens. The renaissance garden features fountains, a gravel path and topiary figures. The fuchsia garden, one of the largest in Europe, contains 104 different species. Other gardens near the castle include an English garden, a water garden, an herb garden, a vegetable garden, and a peasant's garden (bondehave). The gardens also feature four hedge mazes. The oldest is a beech maze several hundreds of years old. This garden is trimmed every year to prevent the trees from dying. The newest maze is the world's largest bamboo maze. It features a Chinese tower in the centre, and a bridge from the tower provides the exit from the maze. The parks feature a three-meter-tall sundial designed by Danish poet and mathematician, Piet Hein.

The estate includes an additional eight square kilometres; 2.5 square kilometres (0.97 sq mi) is forest, with the rest being farmland. The estate has belonged to the Ahlefeldt-Laurvig-Bille family since 1784. In 1986, a full-sized replica of the castle was built in Hokkaidō, Japan, to hold an aquarium. This was constructed with the permission of the Egeskov's owners at the time, Count Claus and Countess Louisa Ahlefeldt-Laurvig-Bille.

Egeskov is home to the following museums.

- A vintage automobile collection

- A vintage motorcycle collection

- A collection describing the history of agriculture

- A collection of flying vehicles

- A collection of Falck and other emergency vehicles

Most of the castle is open to the public, except for the areas used by Count Michael and Countess Caroline Ahlefeldt-Laurvig-Bille. The museum of agriculture and the horse wagon collection is located in the building Ladegård mentioned previously.

Three large modern buildings are occupied by the vintage automobile collection, the vintage motorcycle collection, the Falck collection, and by a collection of airplanes and helicopters. The Falck collection is a collection of vehicles from the Danish rescue company, Falck, emergency vehicles such as fire trucks, ambulances, rescue boats, and other assorted emergency vehicles.

From a good and gracious flickr friend, I was the grateful recipient of several vintage car posters. Not knowing whether this “good friend” wishes to be identified or remain an anonymous benefactor, I will allow this person to decide whether or not he wishes to be known. I am, however, extremely grateful………which I’m sure this individual is aware.

I am now in a position to begin the process of digitalizing these lovely vintage posters - a somewhat daunting task in that I do not have the physical resources (easel, studio lighting, etc) with which to do proper justice to these fine prints. Fact is I mounted a piece of foamboard on the outside of my garage door and have been using double sided, low tack, mounting tape to position the posters onto the foamboard. Obviously not the ideal way to photograph prints but you work with what you have and try to do justice.

Special:

- In 1906, four chassis were built for the Olympia Motor Show. After a lot of interest from the public, manager Claude Johnson set one automobile (an open-top Roi-des-Belges body by coachbuilder Barker & Co. Limited, London) in “silver” (painted in aluminium paint with silver-plated fittings) and named it “Silver Ghost” by virtue of its appearance and “extraordinary stealthiness” (like a ghost).

- Chassis no. 60551, registered AX 201 (the 12th 40/50HP to be made), was the car that was originally given the name "Silver Ghost."

- That title was taken up by the press (the prestigious publication Autocar in 1907) and soon all 40/50HPs were called by that name, a fact not officially recognised by Rolls-Royce until 1925, when the Phantom range was launched.

- Proper production of the 40/50HP at Cooke Street, Manchester had not started until early 1907 after all the effort of preparing the first four motor cars for Olympia and the Paris show which followed.

- It has a centre-change four-speed manual gearbox , a cone type clutch, a Rolls-Royce carburettor, a 6-Volts electric system, dual ignition with coil and magneto and rear wheel drive.

- The chassis (partly steel and ash frame) has a walnut and highly varnished dashboard, leather upholstery, solid front axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs suspension,a live rear axle with cantilever leaf spring platform suspension, worm & nut steering, spoke wheels and internal expanding four-wheel mechanical brakes.

- Many rolling chassis were outfitted with luxurious bodies by some of the top coachbuilders in the industry, like Hooper, Barker, Park Ward, Thrupp & Maberly, James Young, H.J.Mulliner, Windover (London), Gurney Nutting, etc.

- A speed governor (cruise control) and four-wheel servo-assisted brakes (since 1923) were optional.

... we are the Sultans of Swing.

Two uploads in the space of 24 hours, I know it's intense.

I've seen hundreds of C63's (literally) with all of them being in either silver, black, white or a various shade of grey, but never in red!

I like the C63 a lot but it doesn't really fit in with what I like to post but having never seen a red one I thought I'd throw it up here. That and the fact it looks boss in red.

Still doesn't warrant it's own day though. :P

I'm going to a car show this coming weekend (June 2017) and decided to play with some older automobile photos I have to try various enhancement techniques.

I was trying for something a little softer and grungier than bright, shiny surfaces. I tried a different set of techniques on each of 3 photos.

The BMW New Class (German: Neue Klasse) was a line of compact sedans and coupes produced by German automaker BMW between 1962 and 1977. The New Class ensured BMW's solvency after the company's financial crises of the 1950s and established the identity of BMW automobiles as sports sedans.

In 1969, BMW introduced the 2000tii ('touring international, injected'), BMW's first fuel-injected model, featuring Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection. The 2000tii produced 130 hp (97 kW) at 5,800 revolutions per minute and 131 lb•ft (178 N•m) at 4,500 revolutions per minute. 1,952 2000tii cars were built of this final New Class sedan model.

A 2002 tii Touring model was available throughout the run of the tii engine and the Touring body, both of which ended production in 1974.
