The Silver Swan at The Bowes Museum
"This musical automaton is much loved and over the last century has become the icon of The Bowes Museum. The Silver Swan dates from 1773 and was first recorded in 1774 as a crowd puller in the Mechanical Museum of James Cox, a London showman and dealer. The internal mechanism is by John Joseph Merlin, a famous inventor of the time.
The American novelist Mark Twain also saw the Silver Swan at the Paris exhibition in 1867 and described it in his book The Innocents Abroad:
‘I watched the Silver Swan, which had a living grace about his movement and a living intelligence in his eyes - watched him swimming about as comfortably and unconcernedly as it he had been born in a morass instead of a jeweller’s shop - watched him seize a silver fish from under the water and hold up his head and go through the customary and elaborate motions of swallowing it..."

I say "Scots" because her hair and nose are scottish, especially common on the west coast.
Had you seen something like this in the fantastic gardens of the Palace of Versailles a few hundred years ago, with its weirdly smooth and jerky clockwork movements, it would have been an automaton imitating a human being for the entertainment of aristocrats and philosophers. Today it's a human being imitating an automaton imitating a human being for the entertainment of the public, an ironic artistic reflection of the ubiquity of information technology and its self referentiality.

"This spectacular machine, in the form of a medieval galleon, was intended to announce banquets at court. The entertainment began with music from a miniature organ inside the hull, drumming and a procession. Afterwards, the ship would travel across the table. When it stopped, as a grand finale, the front cannon would automatically fire, lighting a fuse that would fire the other guns.
How does the clock work?
Inside the ship are three spring-driven mechanisms, the first of which operated the clock. The second operated the music and drumming, with the whole performance controlled by a large pinned drum mounted on the side. The bellows supplied the organ with air. A third clockwork mechanism propelled the shop along the table, although the wheels have now been replaced with ball feet. Unfortunately the machine no longer functions." (exhibit text)

Finally got to go out & airbrush the Frog (thanks to the break in the rain!)
Think he looks pretty good, might add a few little details, but pretty much done.
Next Step: Building Mechanics to make him jump!!!
With Automaton action, Woodstock travels around the face as the seconds tick over. Wind up watch, has come in very useful over the years when batteries run out on all those quartz watches. LOL
Around 38 years old, and still working fine.
Originally it had a red patent-leather strap (with pigskin lining) but I found it got in the way of the floaty blouses I wore in those days so changed it to a stretch one (which I still have on another watch). The strap on this now was changed when my arthritis became more pronounced and swapped it for a sports style with velcro. Of course, now I can't wear watches at all, so it's just sitting in my 'Watch Box' doing nothing; I wound it up again today to just check if it was working - yep - going strong.
