Having survived for 120 years, this restored automaton has a new lease of life. The movement is unpredictable, sometimes spinning one way, sometimes the other, or almost stopping for a few moments. The steps taken by the dancer look quite complex but it is simply that each legs is a small pendulum, the swing being interrupted each time a foot drops onto the surface of the box.

A much-updated version of the steampunk diorama MOC I posted a while back. This, like my previous version, was built for the Watch City Steampunk Festival. It features no more official sets as filler, a couple of added automaton features, and a far better finished base, among loads of other details. I'll post a video of it in action at some point; everything is powered by a single RCX motor.

The Peacock Clock is large automaton featuring three life-sized mechanical birds. It was manufactured by the entrepreneur James Cox in the 2nd half of the 18th century and through the influence of Grigory Potemkin it was acquired by Catherine the Great in 1781. Today it is a prominent exhibit in the collections of the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg.
Henri Maillardet’s automaton inspired many of the illustrations and designs in Brian Selznick’s The Invention of Hugo Cabret.

She knows she is a made thing, not a creature born. She knows she does not breath or love or laugh. But also, she knows she is beautiful. And that is compensation enough for a heart that ticks or the long stillness of workshop days.

This is a crocheted doll intended for adults, but suitable for older children as well. She is in my automaton series of living dolls so she has pedestal feet rather than more human ones. She is 22 inches tall. Her hair is rooted and will not come out; it is half black and half navy blue, with lighter sparkly highlights. Her face and the gem in her chest are embroidered. The gem glows in the dark. She also features a wire armature that allows her elbows and knees to hold simple poses. She will be a good friend to you.

This is the kind of commodification of fashion that I found in Paris. You couldn't walk anywhere without encountering a mannequin so I decided to give a visual feedback of my experience in Paris.
This is an automated exhibition at the Eden Project. Tim Smit one of the founders said 'It's a breakfast scene of a family, all automatons, having breakfast... everything disappears until eventually you're left with the cat by the fireside, who's making strangling sounds and it dies'.
The Silver Swan at The Bowes Museum
"This musical automaton is much loved and over the last century has become the icon of The Bowes Museum. The Silver Swan dates from 1773 and was first recorded in 1774 as a crowd puller in the Mechanical Museum of James Cox, a London showman and dealer. The internal mechanism is by John Joseph Merlin, a famous inventor of the time.
The American novelist Mark Twain also saw the Silver Swan at the Paris exhibition in 1867 and described it in his book The Innocents Abroad:
‘I watched the Silver Swan, which had a living grace about his movement and a living intelligence in his eyes - watched him swimming about as comfortably and unconcernedly as it he had been born in a morass instead of a jeweller’s shop - watched him seize a silver fish from under the water and hold up his head and go through the customary and elaborate motions of swallowing it..."

This is a view of the entire room installation Sarah L. Hunt did for her solo show, The Hesitation Waltz. This title is taken from 1920's dance moves (the better known Fox Trot is from this era as well).
Sarah designed and hand-painted the wall paper of leaping donkeys as well as constructed large-scale automatons of donkeys.
