Negative fill from camera left. Needed to find a better way of taking care of the specular on the top left iphone - could have moved the the light (bounce point off the ceiling) to change angle of incidence or inserted a cookie.

I ran across Ryan Brenizer's really cool technique and thought I would give it a try tonight. Instead of using Photoshop, I loaded and the 16 images taken with my Canon 70-200mm @ 200mm f2.8 ISO 1600 into Microsoft ICE.
Microsoft ICE automagically stitched the 16 jpgs together in about 2 minutes and this is the finished image with no editing! I can't wait to try this outside with a model!

So, once again, it's that time: the closing of one year, the eve of the beginning of another.
And, to be honest, it couldn't come soon enough. For me, 2015 was most certainly 'the year of living uncertainly'.
Though there were options for me to continue my day job where I was at the end of 2014, I felt it was time for the next adventure, and really needed some time out to not only work out exactly what that would be, but to breathe, as the last year of that job really took its toll on me.
In the end, despite not really being able to afford it, I took about two months out from employment, during which time I tried to give myself space to just be for a bit, as well as looking at jobs, and working on photos.
After probably the longest interview process I'd ever undergone, and ultimately three and a half months of being unemployed, I landed a permanent job. I think only my third ever. So things were looking up...
Then 2015 turned into a bit of a shit storm:
- Myriad stresses over Kyle's visa application to stay with me in the UK as my unmarried partner when his youth mobility visa ran out;
- Kyle and I subsequently ending up breaking up after all of that stress (not just because of the visa stress);
- 'Teething problems' at work;
Not knowing if I'd have to find a new place to live on top of all that;
- A medical condition that's been quite quiet the past five years or more came back with a vengeance in the last month, a timely reminder that I need to look after myself better; and simultaneously
- The stress of applying for indefinite leave to remain in the UK, after being here for the past five years.
In the midst of all that, Kyle was having his own year of uncertainty, trying to decide whether to try to stay in the UK or go back to Australia. Then once the decision was made, going through his own 'dance' with his employer and the immigration authorities, resulting in him taking a much-needed break in Australia for Christmas and New Year's Eve in order to obtain a visa to return to the UK with sponsorship from his employer.
There were some good things in 2015, I know there were, but it's kind of hard to think of them through all of the other stuff this year. These good things kept me going: good friends, new friends, and my photography (though I didn't take or edit anywhere near enough photos this year for my liking).
And I made it to the end of the year to finish on a high note, being granted indefinite leave to remain in the UK on 29 December. So I can feel, once again, that I'm home.
Hopefully 2016 will prove to be less tumultuous than 2015, and even 2014 (when we moved home twice), though a potential move is still on the horizon for the new year.
Despite all of the above, I'm feeling positive for the new year, just a little exhausted. I promise my next update will be more upbeat and focussed on my photography, not feeling sorry for myself. It will be a new year, after all.
I'm also pleased to finally (officially) unveil the new version of my website. It does look awfully like the old version, but you should find it much easier to navigate, and you'll find my work at lusciously large sizes when you click on images to view them in 'lightbox' mode.
I'm still bringing across older blog posts, as unfortunately I'm unable to do that automagically from my old host (and will also, unfortunately, not be able to bring across your lovely comments), but otherwise the site is ready.
I haven't set up my store yet, so if there's anything particular you'd like to see available, please do let me know.
So, rather than an obligatory self-portrait, I close 2015 with an image of my beloved Hornsey gas holders, the one constant for me in 2015, and something of an obsession (if you follow me on Instagram you'll know what I mean). They have also experienced a year of uncertainty, as they were scheduled to be dismantled in summer, but as with all development plans, things have (thankfully) been running behind, allowing me more time to savour them and photograph them. Unfortunately their time is fast running out though, as 'demolition in progress' signs went up early in December, the land around is being cleared, and I fear it will be less than a month before they disappear from my local skyline.
So long, 2015. Don't let the door hit your arse on the way out...

Quantified Self + Motivational Hacks = The Programmable Self

Programmable self is a riff on the Quantified Self (QS). It is a simple concept:
Quantify what you want to change about yourself + motivational hacks = personal change success.
There are several potential “motivation hacks” that people regularly employ. The simplest of these is peer pressure. You could tell all of your co-workers every morning whether you kept your diet last night, for instance. Lots of research has shown that sort of thing is an effective motivator for change. Of course, you can make peer pressure digital by doing the same thing on Facebook/Twitter/Google+/whatever. Peer pressure has two components: shame and praise. It’s motivating to avoid shame and to get praise. Do it because of a tweet and viola, you have digital peer pressure motivation.
Several books have recently popularized using money, in one form or another, as a motivational tool. There is some evidence, for instance, that people feel worse about losing $10 than they feel good about earning $10. This is called loss aversion, and it can easily be turned into a motivational hack. Having trouble finishing that book? Give 10 envelopes with $100 each to your best friend. Instruct them to mail the envelopes to your favorite (or most hated) charity for each month that you do not finish a chapter. Essentially, you’ve made your friend a “referee” of your motivational hack.
So, is there any potential to automate this process? To use software to hack your own motivation? One of the coolest applications that does just that is StickK.com, which is designed to electronically manage contracts you make with yourself.
But that, by itself, is not programmable self.
Programmable self is the combination of a digital motivation hack, like StickK, with a digital system that tracks behavior, like Fitbit (that’s the Quantified Self part). You have to have both. Recently, for example, Stickk started supporting the use of the Withings Scale to support weight entries. Withings is a Wi-Fi-enabled scale that broadcasts your weight automagically to the Withings servers. From there, Withings will send your weight generally wherever you want: HealthVault, other personal health record (PHR) systems, or over to Stickk.com. With that feature, Stickk became a programmable-self platform.
Stickk is pretty old, and Lose it or Lose It, which is focused specifically on losing weight, is also ancient in Internet time. It launched in 2009. The site requires you to take a picture of a weekly weigh in (you actually photograph the scale) and send it in. That counts as digital tracking, but I wonder if it supports Withings (or if it will).
In October 2011, Beeminder launched, billing itself as a direct Stickk competitor, but “for data geeks.” Indeed, it is a little geeky: Beeminder is focused on weight change and other goals that are numerically similar to weight change. The notion is that there is a proper path for the improvement of certain numbers — as well as a little “data jitter” to eliminate — in order to improve. Beeminder also refers to the classical term for the lack of self discipline: akrasia — so bonus points for that.
Last November, The Eatery launched from Massive Health. Massive Health is a massively funded dream team, and their first app is a classic programmable-self experiment. You simply take pictures of your food with your camera (digital tracking = photos) and let others rate your food choices (motivation hack = praise/shame). It’s a good idea, and you can expect lots more from Massive Health that qualifies as programmable self.
Recently, GymPact made a big splash, even ending up in a New York Times blog post. Gympact is an iOS (soon Android) app that lets you check in at the gym. If you fail to check in, you get charged a fee. If you do keep your commitment to go to the gym, then you also earn some of the money from all of the people who failed to go to the gym.
Finally, Buster Benson and Jen S. McCabe are working on Bud.ge, which might be the first of the programmable-self platform plays.
All of these count as programmable self. I seriously doubt that any of these companies were aware of my original interview about programmable self or would even be comfortable with the term, which sounds pretty geeky and devious. (Which is, of course, why I love it.)
Other friends of mine in the serious games/games for health/gamification movement would probably count as programmable self, too. But some of them seem convinced that “fun” can have a deeper component in motivation than some of the more aggressive techniques that I, and other programmable self people, seem to favor. I should also mention that I am hardly the only one in the QS movement stumbling in this direction.
I will be writing about programmable self on Radar occasionally, but there is a lot more going on than I can track here . That’s why I’ve also made a Tumblr about the subject and filled it with all of the “software for behavior change” goodness that anyone can take. My @fredtrotter Twitter account is mostly focused on programmable self as well.
Most importantly, I want to hear about what you have tried to do with your own personal change hacks, especially those that impact your health in one way or another. For that, I have set up a Programmable Self Google Group. Please join us. Some of the top minds in behavior change are already subscribers.
The Quantified Self movement is not primarily about the “tool creators” who make stuff for people to use, but a movement of users who defy the boundaries of tools and manage to create innovative quantification tools on their own. Many of these efforts also count as programmable-self approaches. No discussion of programmable self can ignore the work of individuals, so here is a decidedly non-exhaustive list of people innovating in this space:

- I took this photo at @grandcoffee using an app called ForoMecha, which automagically snaps multiple photos and puts them together on one image. The app works well & the vignetting is a nice touch, but I wish I could change the final shape to a square.

I got this camera on a Facebook sale with a Yashica Electro 35 GT and Fujica Automagic for £20. The Fujica is beyond repair and in the bin, the Yashica needed the Pad of Death and light seals so it now has a burner roll in for testing, the FED has some damage on the shutter curtain as can be seen at the bottom of the image but I love the lens - it is so sharp with lovely bokeh and even the lightmeter still seems accurate
I am attempting a fix of the shutter curtain then will be sticking a roll of Tri-X in it :)

Lighting
SB-900 camera right, 1/4 power, triggered with a poverty wizard. SB-800 camera left, 1/8 power (I think), triggered optically. Both up high, through white um-ba-rellas-ellas-ellas-ehh-ehh.
A portrait before and after post-processing. The before picture is about as bad as it can get. The light was highly directional and coming from straight up (small opening in trees amidst a heavily wooded area) and I had no fill light to soften the shadows (especially in the eye sockets). Also, light falling at such an angle on the skin tends to exaggerate fine lines and skin imperfections, even if the model is in her twenties (as is the case here).
The post processing was done mostly in gimp and the steps are described below.
1) I first opened the raw (thankfully I always shoot in raw) and saved a jpg with +2 ev exposure.
2) I combined the original and the overexposed with "enfuse". It does the blending and "best pixel selection" automagically.
3) I opened the blended and the +2 overexposed as layers in gimp and using layer masks I brightened the shadows in the eye sockets.
4) I applied the "wavelet decompose" filter (under "generic") and set the number of scales (output layers) to 7.
5) Using the airbrush tool and a large smooth brush set to mid gray (128,128,128) I painted the areas of the skin that are supposed to be smooth in layer 7. Using the same brush, but lower opacity I painted in layer 6. Smaller brush and even less opacity in 5 and 4. Then in layers 3 an 2 I used a very small brush and with a low opacity I traced the darkest of the fine lines. This made them just a bit softer, but didn't erase them.
At the end, I flattened the layers.
6) I made a copy of the (now flattened) layer and masked out everything except for the teeth (i.e., paint the teeth white and everything else black in the mask. Make sure to use a soft brush, or blur the mask so the transition is smooth).
I went to curves and boosted the blue a little bit. This removes (reduces) the yellow from the teeth -- don't make the teeth blue, unless you are working with a smurf. Then pulled the value (luminosity) up a little bit to make the teeth a bit whiter. Dial down the layer opacity to 70%, because it's guaranteed that's you've overdone it :-)
7) I flattened the layers and made a new copy. Now I masked out everything except for the eyes. Checked the color of the white of the eyes and found it to be a little too red. Played with individual channels in curves again, to make it a little less red (but don't go for true white, or gray, it will look ridiculous). Then boosted the value again to make the eyes brighter. Blend with 70% again.
8) Used curves to brighten the overall picture a bit and add some contrast.
9) Flattened, saved and posted on flickr!
The nice thing about this skin softening approach (painting in the wavelet decomposition layers) is that it retains the fine structures (pores, lines, texture) of skin that make you know that you are looking at a human and not a cartoon.
