been wanting to experiment with some distant lightning captures and with the recent weather in southern ontario being what it is - figured i'd give it a go.
exposures are all over the place as this was me testing a few ideas
but the results are interesting especially in the last 10 seconds. also note to self : that with all the new automagical sensor cleaning devices built into our cameras these days, i'd forgotten that I should really clean my 20D camera sensor ...

The crew of UP's TRT-909 stay busy into the wee hours, maintaining the massive track-replacement machine. The TRT has the old rail spread apart just to the right of the frame, while the new rail lay in between being pulled into position. Further down, old ties are removed and new concrete ties are inserted, all automagically.
This is quite an operation-- Over a half-dozen work trains spread over 8 miles-- the Joliet Sub never saw this much action!

The National Park Service, in placards posted everywhere, cautions visitors to NOT FUCKING APPROACH WITHIN 100 FUCKING FEET OF ANY FUCKING ANIMAL. But noooo, this FUCKING NIKON shooter (I'm ashamed for him) gets so close to a series of deer, that their behavior changes. My experience has been that photographers can be real assholes, and act as if that because they have nice gear that they are better than anyone else. The RULES don't FUCKING APPLY TO THEM. He kept looking back at me, and because of this ASSHOLE I missed a series of shots. But I got this one, and I'm putting it to good use. I took his license number and reported him to the ranger, along with this image. Asshole. Yes, I did get up real fucking early today, again, for sunrise at the Cove. I'm tired, sweaty, hungry, my shoes and feet are wet, I've been wearing the same blue jeans for three days, and they are now brown. I know this part of Tennessee so well now that I can drive about with my eyes closed. I am having my first hot meal in three days right now, ramen noodles - whoop de doo. So yeah, maybe I overreacted.
FUCKING rent a long lens like I did, so I wouldn't disturb the wildlife. I have nice gear, too, but I respect wildlife, rules, and other photographers.

I went exploring yesterday to a part of my neighborhood I've never been to. Behind the elementary school is a creek that I've finally found a way to cross. Once on the other side, I found what appears to be an old park of sorts that has been converted into a city tree nursery. There is a trail that is kept mowed and has trail markers on it like the one pictured above. Little did I know, I was halfway down the trail when I snapped this one.
Oddly enough, for being dead smack in the middle of the city, the trees around made it very quiet and serene. If it weren't for the neatly mowed trail, I'd have though I was the first to see this park in a very long time.
Oh, and I decided to try out a new watermark to add to my flickr photos. I've started using the L2/Mogrify plugin for lightroom to automagically attach it to exported photos. Let me know if it is too intrusive and I'll rethink it.

This picture is actually a photomontage assembled automagically by Microsoft PhotoSynth. I improved the colors a bit using Pixelmator.

A sweet picture of Michelle H. and her pal, Bailey. Taken on Sunday, 2/10/19 in Globe, Arizona. Dana Danley was the stylist and also took pictures.
All natural light here. Converted to B&W using two onOne Effects Black and White HDR Landscape layers on top of an onOne Effects Black and White Automagic layer. Canon 6D Mark II and Sigma 24-105mm f4.0 Art lens set to 95mm. ISO 200, f9 at 1/200 second.
Fujica ST605.
This is my solid and dependable M42-mount camera. I takes the full range of Pentax/Praktica screw fit lenses.
It was first produced by FUJI CAMERA CO. in 1977. It uses stop down match-needle metering. You push the button on the right side of the lens mount, which 1) stops down the viewing lens to the aperture you've selected and 2) turns on the metering circuitry. There's a little needle on the right side of the viewfinder that goes from high (too much light, stop down) to low (too little light, open up). What I like about match-needle exposure metering (as opposed to match-diode) is that you can tell exactly how much light you need to add or lose. What I also like about the Fujica is that when you engage the meter, you automagically get Depth of Field (DoF) preview, something that even some expensive contemporary cameras don't have.
It's not a particularly outstanding camera in anyway. Just really well built and reliable. The only oddity with camera is 1/700th sec top shutter speed.

Another shot from my distressed looking roll of Neopan 1600 in the Yashica Electro GT. I wound on after the last shot, ripped the sprockets, scratched the film getting it out and light leaks galore. To add to the chaos, the scanner misread the frame with it's automagical thing and I didn't notice until all the frames were saved. You will note the top of the Bellagio on the right side of the frame :) I decided I liked the chaos and didn't correct it or clean anything up. Slapped my white border on and let it loose as is!
