My half century old turntable (well 49) was not pleased when I added a bluetooth device to my vintage stereo yesterday.

The sound from this little JBL bluetooth speaker is impressive. It even provides rich sound when paired with my Audio-Technica turntable.

4-30-18 Macro Monday - Plugs and Jacks

For all you strobist readers out there, here's how the shot was set up.

When I saw the theme for this week, I tossed some ideas around in my head and finally settled on doing a connector of some sort and wanted a dark blue vignetted background. Scrounging around in my desk I found this Audio-Technica Mini 4 pin lav microphone jack and decided it would make the perfect subject.

I set this all up on my desktop, so I didn't have a lot of room to work with. I wanted to get the background working first, so I set up one Godox TT600 pointed right at the camera through a sheet of diffusion. My first shot was way too bright even at F16 and using HSS at 1/2000. I stuck a CTB on the flash and still too bright. Barely getting any blue. I found a really dark blue gel and stuck in on with the CTB and still just a light blue. I wanted dark blue. Not having any ND gels, I just stuck a sheet of printer paper over the flash head and voila, almost there. One more sheet of printer paper and I had the background exactly where I wanted it. On to the subject....

I positioned the jack with my handy Panavise Junior....they're good for more than just soldering. Took a test shot with just the background flash and got no light spill, just a black shadow in the shape of my connector. Perfect. Now to light the connector. I wanted a softish light so I stuck a mini soft box onto my second TT600 and took another test shot. Very nice soft light, but my background went from a nice dark saturated blue to baby blue. That wasn't going to do it. Took off the soft box and threw on a 1/4" MOVO grid. I positioned the flash as close as possible to get an as soft as possible light with essentially a "bare" flash. The flash was literally resting on the lens directly over the subject. Keep in mind that this connector is maybe 1cm wide, so a bare speedlight is large compared to it. Flash was set at 1/8 power. I liked the exposure and the way this was headed, but the bottom of the connector was pitch black. I wanted it to be shadow, but I wanted a little detail to come out down there as well. I stuck a 3x5 white index card on the desktop directly opposite the flash and.....Bingo. Just that little bit of fill and I liked the way it looked.

So, to summarize. Background TT600 pointed at camera with 2 blue gels shot through 2 sheets of copy paper set at 1/128. Key TT600 with 1/4" grid set at 1/8 power directly above lens shooting back at about 45 degrees with fill card below. Flashes triggered with Godox X1T-N.

Happy Macro Monday everyone.

Shot for Macro Mondays "Starts with P theme".

Cool close abstract of my record player tone arm. Outtake since I can only post 1 for the weekly theme...

Joni Mitchell: what a great singer/songwriter. I bought the tape in 1982, the year it was released. I was working in Hong Kong at the time and had just bought my first portable player. I can't remember the last time I played the album, but I'm listening to it now on the Aiwa recorder/player which must be at least 20 years old. The headphones are Audio Technica AIR ATH-AD700 which I bought 30 years ago. They're still going strong.

Taken on a Nikon D750 with the 55mm AIS 2.8 macro lens @f/11. Shot late afternoon in natural light.

Friend don't let their friends buy Beats! For years I used my truty Sony MDR-7000DJ. I thought it time to look into a replacement as they are starting to look a little worn. A co-worker and fellow audio enthusiast directed me to the Audio-Technica ATH-M50s. I wanted something that sounded great, but also wouldnt cost $200+. I couldn't be happier with the purchase. Not only do they sound great but the oval earpiece covers your ear completely for comfort and for noise control.

So I thought I would start a fun series about music, specifically albums and songs. It might be weekly, and it might not. Ich weiß nicht. The normal April "Record Store Day" is postponed again, so this might be something enjoyable to music lovers.

Since I really haven't been anywhere in the past year, I think it is appropriate to begin with Herb Alpert's "Going Places" from 1965. Do you have some household chores to do? Throw this record on. Going for a nice walk or drive? Put it on your playlist. It's a great album by a wonderful group.

At the height of Walkman craze in the early 1980’s, Audio Technica debuted the AT-727 Sound Burger, a portable turntable. Much like cassettes in Walkman, the Sound Burger lets users play record everywhere… so long as they didn’t want to do anything that Walkman so versatile… like walking, since Sound Burger needed a flat surface to play.

One year ago I was on holiday in Nippon. These are some photo's of exactly one year ago.

My first full day in Osaka was, looking back, not a very productive one. The plan was to go to Osaka Castle but I never got there. I got caught up in the Yodobashi and the entire area around it. I was a bit tired that day and I just wanted to roam around and relax.

Audio-Technica is a Japanese maker of turn-table needles, microphones and headphones. I already had a pair on the recommendation of MKBHD. But at Yodobashi they had all the models, models that are hard to get in Europe. I listened and tried the most expensive headphones they had. Just to experience a good headphone. Then I tried these open-air floating Audio-Technica's and there were just scary. Ultra light and you don't even notice you a re wearing any headphone and the music is just there. I didn't get them because they were ¥18000, I don't listen to music a lot and didn't feel too sturdy.

And I'm pretty sure frankie loves me too.

She's great comfort when waiting in transit or when I don't feel like catching a movie on the plane.

If you love the quirky, you'd love frankie too.

New toy. I immediately recorded a trippy version of the old murder ballad "Katie Dear" with it.

2018 was the 50th Anniversary of the Steve McQueen movie ‘Bullitt” so in honor of it a new 50th Anniversary ‘Bullitt Soundtrack’ LP on Limited Edition Orange Vinyl was released. A decal on the record jacket reads: A Barnes & Noble Exclusive.

Music composed and conducted by Lalo Schifrin. The original 1968 LP was also offered on Limited Edition Orange Vinyl.
