Single Family home well involved upon arrival. Exterior offensive attack with transition to interior offensive attack. Hazards of hoarder like home made entry difficult but crews successfully stopped the fire from spreading to adjacent exposures.

At 4:00PM Sheridan attacked, throwing his entire line forward. Confederate resistance was fierce and the positions stalemated for an hour. Then Brig Gen Clement Evan's division on the left, heavily pressured by Custer's cavalry and XIX Corps, began to crumble. Custer's cavalry raced to the Confederate rear. With the powerful Union cavalry behind them and racing to cut off their lines of retreat behind Cedar Creek, the Confederate troops panicked and their lines shattered, thousands fleeing down the Valley Pike to try to find safety. Maj Gen Stephen Ramseur's division, heavily pressured on all sides, managed to hold together as it withdrew. Then Ramseur fell mortally wounded and his men broke as well.
The Heater House was a log cabin built in the 1700s and extensively modified afterwards to its current clapboard state in the 1860s. While the original Baldwin family owned 11 slaves, Caroline Heater was from Pennsylvania and "was violently opposed to slavery". Consequently the Heater Family ran the prosperous farm with no slave labor. When war came, Caroline would later state: " We shall have graveyards at every door. My husband and I had some discussion in regard to the merits of the war at the beginning. He was a Virginian and perhaps his sympathies were more for Virginia than for the North, but he never voted for the ordinance of secession. I was not a Virginian and opposed to secession,"
Two of Caroline's three sons cast their lot with the Confederacy, and both died in the war. On Oct 19, 1864, the Battle of Cedar Creek was fought across the Heater House, first when Confederate troops overran Union positions in the morning and then when Union troops routed the Confederate forces in the afternoon. The Heater House was badly damaged and then looted after the engagement. After the war, the Heaters applied for compensation from the Federal government. Despite affidavits attesting to their loyalty, the government would not compensate the family until 1901, when the last surviving child, Charles Heater, received half of the requested reimbursement.

These big, bushy flowers in the Public Garden seem to have made these people uncomfortable. But don't worry -- the flowers aren't massing against visitors to Boston. They'll remain on their stalks, which are rooted in the ground, and everyone is perfectly safe.
The United Way of Elkhart County's 5th annual What Floats Your (cardboard) Boat Race. The Friends of the Elkhart Public Library sponsored the EPL boat, "Shark Attack," which won the award for the "most scary" entry.
