The first Cape Florida lighthouse was built in 1825. In December 1835 the Second Seminole War broke out after a U.S. Army unit marching north was massacred by Seminoles.
"My name is John Thompson, newly appointed keeper of the Cape florida Light. Yesterday, July 23, 1836, my assistant and I were attacked by Seminole rifle fire.
We kept the indians at bay until nightfall but we were forced to leave the cottage and barricade ourselves in the lighthouse. My assistant and I were badly wounded from Seminole bullets. My feet were nearly shot off. The Indians set fire to the entrance, the doors and the windows of the light. Breaking oil cans used for illuminating the light fed the fire, which soon covered the entire floor.
We ran up the tower stairs, which caught fire from the bottom up. We were desperate. Finding ourselves caught on the iron tower floor, which was burning hot, there seemed to be no way out of our situation. We were surely going to burn to death. I threw down gun powder expecting to cause an explosion, which would put a quick end to our lives. I guess the Indians thought the explosion killed us. They burned down my cottage and took off in my sloop.
The explosion actually put out the fire. Unfortunately, my assistant, who was shot, died from his wounds. Parts of my feet are burned and shot off. I am also suffering other burns and have spent 12 hours naked on the watch tower, eaten by mosquitoes and roasting under the burning sun. It seemed as if I was now almost as bad off as before, a burning fever on me, my feet shot to pieces, no clothes to cover me, nothing to eat or drink, a hot sun overhead, a dead man by my side, no friend near or any to expect, and placed between 70 and 80 feet from the earth with no chance of getting down.
Finally I was rescued by a passing naval vessel -- The Motto. Apparently he sailors heard the explosion and came to see what the problem was. They found me on the tower, but couldn’t get up the burnt stairway. To rescue me, they fired a line from a musket that snagged the lantern gallery and hoisted a tail block for me to secure. Then two crewmen scaled the tower and lowered me on a makeshift litter. "
..........Thompson did recover, though somewhat crippled.
From the direction of the treeline came units from Iverson's and Nicholl's Brigades. Their flanking attack helped to drive off the Union presence at the Buschbeck Line (just to the right of this photo).

Joint Fires Observers from 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade and their Latvian Joint Terminal Attack Controllers conducted a combined training exercise DATE at Lielvarde Airbase, Latvia. The training is taking place in conjunction with JTACs from the U.S. Air Force and Michigan Army National Guard's unmanned aerial surveillance assets from the 37th Inf. Bde. Putting on a superb show as nearly always seems to the case for Brits, no. 70000 storms the 1 in 70 of Upton Scudamore Bank on the 12th April 2012.
I brought with me the Yongnuo 50mm f/1.4 lens to the big greaser meet at Lissma park. Haven't used the lens much this Summer but decided to give it a try at the car event. This is the hood ornament on a 1949 Mercury Monarch.
Following a series of clashes between riot police protecting a far right rally and anti-racist groups, several platoons of riot police also attacked the encampment of Greece's Los indignados movement in the northern port city of Thessaloniki. Using pepper spray and flash grenades to disperse those present the police were eventually forced to retreat after camp organisers formed a human shield between themselves and angry demonstrators.
