Aspen trees (Populus species) are the most common trees in Minnesota. Their white bark is a visible marker for the tree. They may have one common root that sprouts a large number of vertical trees. Their bark provides food and/or antler rubbing fodder for various animals. This landscape was seen along Highway 61 between Duluth and then on Highway 12 (Gunflint Trail). Gunflint trail partially runs along the border between Minnesota and Ontario.
