If you asked me if you can photograph something you cannot see, I'd respond by saying that for all practical purposes, you cannot. One must be able to see at least some aspect of what they want to photograph. So then perhaps you point to this image and say, "Well surely you couldn't see that, it doesn't exist in such a manner." I would counter by saying of course I saw it, how else could I have photographed it? I mean, what are the odds that I just walked out to the Arc de Triomphe and exposed six frames on my Holga that just so happened to line up in such a way to make this image? Slim to none. Maybe an infinite number of monkeys with an infinite number of cameras photographing forever would eventually stumble across this composition blindly, but I don't own a single monkey, let alone an infinite army of them.
Defining sight is tricky, sure. Most of it is done with the eyes, but sight is more than just the focusing of light through the lenses of our eyes. If that was all sight was then nodoby would be color blind and we would see the world upside-down and backwards as the image was projected into our eyes. In fact there is a condition called cortical blindness where one's eyes work perfectly fine but the brain is incapable or receiving or processing the data the eyes and optical nerves send. Furthermore, there is a phenomenon known as blindsight, where cortically blind people are able to react to visual stimuli they cannot consciously see, such as reflexive action or forced guessing.
But what does this have to do with photography? So what if sight is a combination of eyes and brain, where do the cameras come in? Well, they don't really, because this isn't really about the cameras, it is about seeing and the difficulty in photographing what one cannot see. Many photographers like to equate photography with shooting guns, so let's run that analogy. Imagine you go hunting. The most commonly practiced method is to stalk an animal until it is sighted and then to close within a reasonable range and shoot it. This method succeeds because you saw the animal, you knew it was there. Imagine stepping into a forest and randomly shooting hoping to hit something through blind luck. It wouldn't work very well at all, would it? In photography we have the term "spray and pray" but in reality, that spray and pray is still directed by sight to some degree, it is never completely blind nor random.
I think it is also important to attach importance to the visualization that goes on in your head as being part of sight. Call it seeing with your "mind's eye" if you will. Whatever works for you. Ansel Adams referred to it as pre-visualization - seeing before seeing. It is important to consider this aspect of seeing because while you cannot really train your eyes to accept light differently, you can train your mind to interpret that visual data in different fashions. In that sense - and the key point to this little essay - sight can be treated as a skill, one that CAN be trained, nurtured, expanded and so on and so forth.
Sight as a skill should be an important consideration for most photographers. How many photographers stay home in poor weather/light because they cannot "see" any good photos to make out there while other photographers go out knowing what to look for and they tend to find it. The more you can see, the more you can photograph. Of course, you can also opt to wander that forest blindly firing away with your infinite army of monkeys. I imagine at some point you are bound to hit something... eventually.
-------- Photographer's note -----------
Wow, this image has such a different feel than what it was like to stand there. This roundabout is sheer organized chaos, in a slightly frightening fashion. What makes it even more hair-raising is that the method for reaching the center of the Arc is through an underground tunnel - one whose presence is not immediately obvious. You stand here long enough and you will see people run across the street through the traffic because they think it is the only way to cross. I saw one father with two young children, a baby, and the baby's stroller actually brave the non-stop flow of traffic to get across. It made my heart lurch up in my throat a brief moment certain I was about to see an awful accident take place when they scampered out into the road. But they made it. The experience made me want to photograph the tunnel under the Arc as part of the whole, but the this isn't possible in a single, straight image. But that was the vision that drew me into making this Holgarama. The result accomplishes those hopes... to a degree. As with most of these Holgaramas, the end result is often at least slightly (and usually severely) different than I initially expected. There are aspects to this idea I wouldn't mind refining and I certainly mind taking another crack at the Arc with my Holga. But any excuse to visit Paris again is a good excuse. ;-)
They asked me: “Why are you not publishing our photos? Are we not so cute?” It hurts me. They are very common but I am nothing to take such a judgement.

I had actually asked Barney to "stay" so that I could take a photo with the waves and sunset behind him but the excitement of the beach lured him away. Interesting scents and objects to be found: sea weed, drift wood, pebbles and so on, demanded his urgent attention and he just couldn't bring himself to stay still longer than a fraction of a second. So I got this one - Barn busily exploring the seashore, apparently completely ignoring me, intent on sniffing and exploring - though I suspect if I'd bent down to pick a pebble up he'd have been at my feet instantly!
Barney is quite independent at times, he does likes to play but is less obsessive than some BCs are. He's happy running around, doing his own thing. Actually, it was a real problem when we were first getting to know each other as Barn would take himself off for adventures without much of a thought about where his "hoomans" were. He never quite ran away from me (if he got too far, I'd run in the opposite direction, making high-pitched squeaky calls - it worked every time) but I know both my dad and step-mum lost him for 30mins or so, on at least a couple of occasions. These days Barney is very tuned in to where I am and while he still enjoys his independence and time spent doing his own thing, I am confident that I probably couldn't lose him if I tried!
Been away since Monday - having my monthly check-up at the hospital. All is well, my consultant is still happy with my progress and says everything looks fine. The other good news, is that I had my PEG (stomach feeding tube) out today!! Fitted almost exactly this time last yr, prior to surgery for oral cancer I needed to use it for all my food (and even drink) due to the operation, then radiotherapy and the pain and loss of my swallow reflex that that caused. Over the summer I've got lots better with eating and finally felt confident enough to have it taken out. I hadn't expected for that to happen this week though - thought I'd have to wait for the next clinic, so it was a bit of a surprise!! Hopefully, I've not acted too soon and I'll be able to keep my weight stable... without needing to drink complan shakes (yuk!). A bit strange to be tubeless after so long - I keep expecting to feel it. It is really nice to have my own body back though and a major step forward in my recovery, so all in all its been a happy day :)
"How would I know to seek a greater way of living
If I had not been misunderstood and cast out
If I didn’t have to let go of everything that mattered
To find my life and lose it all over again
If the land around me had not dried up and denied me
And emptied out my accounts
How would I know the hunger that comes
If my dream had not eluded me and faded into the shadows
Leaving me void of meaning and purpose
How would I know the thirst to know myself
If I had not fallen hard onto my knees
Too exhausted to take another step
Too ashamed to ask for help
How would I know that ache or want
Which is in itself an answer hurling itself upon the heart
Invoking there a new blossoming of sound and feeling
Erecting a new earth that shapes itself in and around my Being
How would I know this gift of Grace without the pain of desire
How otherwise would these songs of joy and courage have come"
Ganga Fondan, 2009
This posting is once again inspired by my Mentor’s message. This week’s seminar with Tulshi Sen was a great reminder to look at the correlation of what I desire and how I love. Where do my desires come from: my head or my heart? He explained: “Every Vision is a product of love”. He went on to challenge us on the different aspects of love such as self-serving, co-operative or unselfish unconditional love. The way we love is our pattern of thinking and through this lens we feel what we want in life. In my own experience, this lens comes more into focus as I practice the meditations given in: “Ancient Secrets of Success for Today’s World.” I realize that what seemed so hard and impossible many times in my life were actually gateways to a deeper self-awareness and trust. Only emptied will I discover the wealth of my true heart’s desire.

She was a beauty--a gold 45 goddess for sure! A Gold 45 Goddess exalts the archetypal form of Athena--the Greek Goddess of wisdom, warfare, strategy, heroic endeavour, handicrafts and reason. Pencil drawing.
I have often been asked here on flickr why I have an ‘obsession’ with drawing film star portraits, why not draw ordinary people, sometimes it has been asked in not a nice way, someone even described my work as kitsch the definition of which is worthless or trivial art. I taught myself to draw many years ago by drawing famous faces trying to get an exact reproduction that was immediately recognized by anyone who saw it and gradually I have also tried to capture something of the subject’s inner essence. I have drawn many ‘ordinary’ faces over the years and my sketchbooks are full of studies of ‘ordinary’ faces and figures.
I have noticed over my time on flickr that the more popular the subject the more comments it gets it’s nothing to do with the drawing itself and I know people are getting bored with me turning out one famous face after another. I do not sell my work I have a large stack of work sitting in a drawer and I end up giving most of it away. So I draw what I enjoy drawing not to please anyone else. I do not care what anyone thinks if it is worthless or trivial I will just keep on drawing what pleases me. I did go to art school when I was younger but soon left because I could not take the pretentiousness of the art world and went into graphic design instead.
I know there are many friends on flickr who do enjoy seeing my work and are always very kind about it, that is the reason why I still post my work and will carry on posting it. So many thanks to all of you, I do appreciate your input even if I don’t reply to every comment ...Take care.

A lot of people have asked what comes next.
The answer? We don't know any better than you do.
I know that I met this amazing, funny, sweet person, and I'm completely wild over her. That I've had her in every minute of my life for the last week, and that every minute felt right. And that tomorrow everything changes.
After that?
I really can't say. I wish I knew. Really, we're taking it minute by minute and sometimes it feels like we're spinning out of control.
We say our strange goodbyes and go back to phonecalls and webcams - the technologies that once seemed fresh and exciting are a step backward; a step apart. It's going to be hard. I know that much.
I'm hoping a California trip is in the cards.
But I can only see as far as Monday. School begins. Xelia will be gone. We're left with memories and marks; a cold spot in the bed where someone is missing.
Hey you asked for it and I delivered it. Here is the Mom piece I painted in 1989. It was based off a sketch, I believe. It was so long ago that I actually am second guessing myself. I don't remember. Funny thing is, this was all stock tips and Krylon. One of the colors is actually Coral. Damn, was that a good color. Coral over a light peach. Another crazy thing is, I still do shines like this. I haven't looked at this piece in so long that I never realized that my shines came from so far back. That's amazing. Still to this day, I am always looking to find new and better way's to do my shines and they all seem to come back to this simple style. I painted this at a local bridge adjacent to a lake. It was off a sort of bike/walking path. I painted many pieces there and still to this day, I bomb it every year. I try to rock pieces there but a guy got murdered around it a few years ago and so now the cops do double duty patrolling it and there just isn't a safe place to park. After I finished the piece, I brought my Mom out here to show her and take some photos with me in front of it. Corny as hell, I know. Mom's always love that type of shit. I had on my neon green hat and my high school football jersey. It made for a real nice combo. My high school jersey was red. One of those, "what the hell was I thinking at the time", type of photos. Oh well, it was the 80's.
Amazing how different each Poppy is yet how beautiful in her own way. AAG in Carol Roth black dress.

I was at the park Monday to photograph a Jasmine that was leaving the show (she asked me if I would do a set of pictures for her).
On the way out a Disney performer (Molly the Messenger) in character started to engage me in conversation. I mentioned to her that she looked familiar. After a few seconds I placed her as a former Jasmine and a Mini's Fly Girl. At that point I asked her if she had a sister named maybe Amanda, Pat or Kate (names of the Mini's Fly Girls). She stayed in character and didn't acknowledge her former roles. While this was happening the Aladdin Oracle was standing next to me giving me death stares and the occasional elbow for trying to see if I could get her to break character.
While this Jasmine was performing in the Aladdin show I wasn't doing much in the way of Aladdin photo's on Flickr. So after I got home I did a photo for her.
Photo wise there is some crop (not very much). This started in LR for the global adjustments then went into Photoshop 5 for some dodging and other clean up.
I was asked to do a cute lil Year-in-Review mini book using Elle's Studios' new chipboard albums!! They are yummy!! I did the first three months; January, February, and March...I covered both sides of the chipboard with
