Happy Memorial Day 2014, think of those who have served.

Arlington National Cemetary

My mom starting making this snowman, but she only completed the main body, and partially made the arms. My father asked someone my mom knew to complete the snowman. I took a bunch of pictures of it over the holidays.

I asked to the driver of my guesthouse to drive me in the surrounding countryside early in the morning. It was not harvest season but some ricefields are not the same kind and could be harvested earlier like this one. In such situation it's nice to have a guide who could ask people if they don't mide I take picture dureing maybe 20 minutes. My Khmer language skills were very limited so eventhough I could ask myself, a guide is very helpfull to explain people what is my goal and the way I am allowed to act. Usually I prefer to be alone but sometimes I like to change my way.

I was asked how I compose with my pinhole box camera, to which my standard response is: “I point it that-a-way”. People laugh when I say that and it’s a little moment of camaraderie. It is practically the antithesis of all things “Ansel”. “Why even bother?” may be the unspoken thought in some minds, and indeed I often wonder why I enjoy the relative lack of precision afforded -and required- by pinhole photography. In truth, there are a number of reasons.

First and foremost, perhaps, is that I cannot be Ansel. [or Ruth Bernard, or Atget, etc]. No one can. And if I try to be any of them, I won’t have enough energy left over to find out who I, myself, can be.

Next, there are surprises. Not always. Like most things photographic, true successes are few, and the time spent in the field is often the only reward I get. But occasionally, the result ends up being a gift I had not completely anticipated.

The last I might mention is surrender. When I place the camera, I have to wait. This image took 30 mins. During that time, I wandered, I wondered, I looked about, watched others work, talked to passers-by. I was alive in the moment, tethered but awake, slacking, lollygagging. Time is it’s own reward, it is precious beyond description. And this surrendering to the moment, this abiding… well, maybe I’m actually chasing this, maybe I just think I’m a photographer.

Point it that-a-way.

Caeli wheeled his basket full of milk bottles out of the shop. He was on his way somewhere. I figured that he wouldn’t have time for me to be a subject of my strangers project, so I didn’t approach him straight away. He sat down on a bench and I thought “maybe he has a minute”.

When I asked if I might take his photo, he said that he was working and didn’t have time. I said that it would only take a couple minutes and gave him my card to take a look at.

Caeli then agreed to take part, we had a chat and we made some portraits. We were done before he finished smoking his cigarette.

When he is not working Caeli enjoys making music. He is working on an album that he started 10 years ago. You can listen to some of his music on Bandcamp.

Caeli asked me if I had heard of Vivian Maier, who photographed people in the ‘50s. She was a street photographer and made wonderful candid images [vivianmaier.com].

Thank you Caeli for being part of my project. It was great to meet you today. Best wishes for your album.

. . . to see the pink cast! Me out on the deck with all the junk out there! No mistaking the pink! :)

Thanks for asking me if I am fine.

I am and I am just very busy preparing for an exhibition in Tokyo with other work now.

I try to make a new painting, but maybe because I feel I should hurry, my painting gets worse and worse :-((( I have just started the same one again yesterday. I hope this time it works and otherwise I might give up exhibiting this painting in Tokyo.

Apart from it, I went to the RHS London Orchid show on Friday and Saturday. The show includes botanical art exhibition and because the standard was so high, it was actually both encouraging and discouraging.

I took photos there of course, but there were not many acceptable shots either. I have to work hard in many ways. I uploaded one of few so-so shots here. This is Paphiopedilum malipoense.

Happy Birthday!

No idea what the number stands for.

In a village Kreung.

Ratanakiri province, Cambodia

At first sight this picture wasn't easy to take since I had heard that people in Cambodia, as a lot of other ethnies, are scared of the camera thinking that taking a picture could steal your soul.

When I arrived in this village this woman smiled to me, I came to her, smiling back, and I finally pointed at my camera to "ask" if I could take a picture. She smiled again and nodded. She smiled at her baby too and carried him kindly so I could see them better.

I thanked her with my eyes, the more I could, and showed her the pictures I took. She was very sweet and so beautiful, her son too. It was an amazing so simple moment.

Many people ask, including myself "What did the original scene look like?"

I thought I would let everyone see the original shot of this particular post. A crop, elimination of two crows, add my signature, lighten the scene and that is it. OK. So thats all my eyes and Photoshop expertise will let me do.

Original is in first comment box below.

To me vital to come back there again and again, only there you feel free, only there are answers to all questions

*More Mbili girls

*Not that you really asked, I'd just like to pretend that you did. LOL!!

Something is wrong with my camera and I'm really down, because I have all of these dressed girls that need to be photographed. Hopefully I can pick up a new one after work tomorrow and be back in business!!

Gray ghost surprise!!

It's always good to wash your fruit in the morning. You may ask...."But why?".....The answer...because it means you're facing your big sliding glass doors and might spot something wonderful out in the open space behind your house. That's exactly what happened. I saw a hawk come swooping in and land right behind my fence. I assumed it was our resident red-tailed hawk.....but when I went over to look...it was flying away from me and I could see it had a white patch on top of it's tail which could only mean a Northern Harrier. However, what I didn't expect was that it was a MALE harrier or as many call it a Grey ghost!!! We have never seen a male harrier hunting behind our house. I made some inaudible sounds with my excitement.....grabbed my camera and bolted out of the back door. I really didn't expect it to hang around very long, and it didn't. It flew out of sight, but then back in sight, and then repeated this numerous times. Finally he started making some circles and made a few passes right in front of me. He also managed to fly with some very nice fall colors behind him in the distance. I will have a few more to share, but here are some of my favorites.

Love Valley

The length of the Love Valley is 4900 meters. Although the entrance to the valley is not very suitable for vehicles, it is still accessible here. The moment you squeeze your teeth, you will be waiting for a beauty that will never regret you. Right after the landing, the water that comes in front will make your work difficult. However, the only time you have survived this short zone is to remove this pleasure. The most important feature of Cappadocia and the Love Valley and the elements that make this place wonderful are the fairy chimneys. Different sizes, colors, and even the impressive expression of light, these views will make you fall in love with yourself. It looks like the hats of the Smurfs we're fans of. Time travel between vineyards and fruit trees lasts approximately 2.5 hours. If you are accustomed to nature walks, you are sure to remember your moments happily after this region where you can finish in a short time with a slight tempo. But even if you say “I am not used to nature walking “, you will not even understand that you are tired of the beauty of the region. Whatever your choice, you will see it worth it.

This is another shot from the last batch of images from my D5100. Since I now switched to Canon as my 2.nd camera, I guess I will find out if it is the camera or the monkey behind it which causes problems.

The image was taken in Asker last week around sunset. I have previously posted a shot from this location which I like a lot.

Due to the fact that the sun sets behind some hills, the glorious last rays can not be captured in Asker.

Thanks for stopping by.

Lel, It's been quite the work in progress, but I'm extremely happy to announce the completion of Andrew Somers MH-6 Little Bird, and boy oh boy it feels really good to cross something off my to do list, and especially to have something as freaking kick-ass as this little model, which is extremely accurate in every aspect including them swooshes. Anyone with questions about how to build the MH-6 please ask Andrew who I've tagged below.

Ask Any Girl has been one of my favorite Poppys for a long time. I never thought I'd get a chance to own her, since she's an older convention doll, but I saw a chance to get her on Ebay and nearly lost my mind. <3 <3 <3 She was transformed into a more natural style by her previous owner but she's still got that AAG thing about her that I just can't pinpoint that I love.
