Snappy Little Numbers (2013)
My favorite thing about doing this website is the thought that somewhere there is someone buying a record by a band they hadn't heard of previously because I said it was good. I just love listening to new music and sharing it with people. I don't always think that I write well enough to really articulate how good a record is to someone that hasn't already heard it, but I do my best to convey the feelings I have about the record. Allow me to convey; this Hooper record is flat out great.
I had picked up a 7" by them on a lark a while back. Padding out a distro order to qualify for free shipping. It was a good 7" and I have been waiting to hear more from them. They delivered and then some with their debut full length. How To Become A Ghost is steeped in the 90's, rolling together influences of some of my favorite sounds of that era.
Musically you get the guitar work and song structure of a Tugboat Annie, but with a much crunchier sound reminding me of maybe a less polished Fig Dish. Vocally, I'm very much reminded of poppier punk bands like Zoinks!, but with a ton more emphasis on backing vocals and harmonies. This doesn't sound like a throwback to the 90's, it sounds like it could be one of the better records that was actually released in that decade. Don't take that as if I'm saying this record sounds dated, as I still think that there are 20 year old records that sound as fresh and exciting as the first time I listened to them.
I'm just extremely impressed by Hooper, a band that probably doesn't have the noteriety of a lot of the bands I tend to write about, but a band that really deserves to have a few more people check them out. I do wish the whole album was streaming somewhere as I don't feel the one song the band has up on their site really conveys just how great the record is as a whole. But it's still a snappy little number. Go check it out.

The ZicroMount III is used to mount any device with a ¼ 20” or a 3/816” inch (with a ¼ 20” to 3/8 16” adapter) screw hole. The Zicromount III is screwed into the bottom of the device such as a monitor (pictured here) and mounted to any 15mm rod, threaded articulating arm with Zacuto ZUDS orZamerican Arm. The Zicromount III has the ability to attach to the device using two screws. The Zicromount III also has L shaped claws to prevent devices from turning and unwinding. By adding an optional camera pin, the ZicroMount III can be used as a mini Baseplate for small cameras, allowing for quick-release onto tripods and Zamerican arms for press conference shooting.
In case anyone's wondering - I borrowed my co-worker's Manfrotto articulating arm. This is the same arm I believe Chase Jarvis used in his bike shoot (POV) video.
My first impression is that I even just holding my XT with the battery grip off, I'm having trouble getting this arm rigid. Not surprisingly the best driving shots were when I am stopped (see here) or driving over extremely smooth freeways. I reshot a few bike shots and they were at first glance worse than my home brewed $5.00 fixture.
More tinkering required, I'm chalking this to "user = id ten t" error.

I found the articulating arms portion of this lamp covered in red paint. After stripping the paint, waxed the steel and mounted a period brass paddle switch, an Uno threaded fitter and a green cased-glass shade. I then wired it with a cloth covered twisted cord and mounted it to a vintage cast iron barbell weight.

Since its beginning, the Miss America Pageant has attracted the most talented, articulate and
poised young women-women like Miss West Virginia 1999, Lucy Ours. With high hopes and big dreams, young women all across America (nearly 100,000 at the latest count) compete at the local, state and national level. Twenty-two young women from all corners of the Mountain State competed in the 1999 Miss West Virginia Scholarship Pageant. The stakes were high; nearly $24,000 in college
scholarships were available to this year's participants. For Lucy Ours of Petersburg, her life was
changed forever.
With future ambitions in the field of public relations, Lucy is applying her Miss West Virginia
scholarships, which nearly total $12,000, towards a degree in journalism at West Virginia University. She is devoting her year of service as Miss West Virginia to promoting and encouraging all West Virginians to get involved and make a difference in the life of a child. "I have been fortunate to have had parents and other supportive adults in my life who nurtured me and provided me with positive role models. Unfortunately, this is not the situation for many young people today," says Lucy. Visiting
schools all across the Mountain State, Lucy is an obvious and suitable role model to thousands of children. A member of the National Mentoring Partnership, she was the keynote speaker at the 1999 RESA Teen Institute Rally and HOBY Clew Workshop "Communities Win When Youth Serve" panel member. Her message to young people was so moving that participants from Jefferson County asked
her to travel to their school to deliver a pre-prom speech to the junior and senior classes.
Additionally, Lucy's responsibilities as Miss West Virginia include representing the statewide
platform for American Red Cross Blood Services. As Miss West Virginia 1999, Lucy will travel hundreds of miles each month to help recruit new volunteer blood donors and increase the frequency of blood donations throughout our state. The message is clear: by giving blood, you give the gift of life.
For nearly 50 years, the Miss America Pageant has been awarding college scholarships to its participants. It is the largest single source of scholarship funds for young women in the world. Over $32 million is awarded annually to Miss America participants at the local, state and national levels of
competition. Here at home, colleges state-wide-West Virginia University, Marshall University, West
Virginia Wesleyan College, Salem-Teikyo University, West Virginia State College, Glenville State College, Shepherd College, Alderson-Broaddus College, Bluefield State College, Concord College, and Davis & Elkins College-offer Miss West Virginia a scholarship to their school.
