2004 16’H x 16’W x200’L City of Santa Clara Central Library, Santa Clara, CA Fabricated metal / Light Five arches create a welcoming entrance to the City of Santa Clara Central Library. The Illuminated Page is inspired by the delicate motion created by turning a page, and references the transparent, glowing quality of illuminated manuscripts. The semi-transparent arcing forms are lit from within. At night the sculptures glow.
Currier Museum Art Center students were inspired by Abigail Anne Newbold's exhibition "Crafting Settlement" (on view March 30-July14, 2013) and created their own "settlement" during April Vacation week Art Camp.

Dave, an Educator from Squam Lake Natural Science Center, gives a "Natural Encounters" talk at the Currier Museum Art Center the last week of summer camp, in August 2012, about threatened and endangered New Hampshire animals. The Art Center students, ranging in age from 5-12, created bat "lanterns" that they then sold at the conclusion of this week-long art camp to help raise money for Bat Conservation International. The event raised a little over $400 for this non-profit.

Walks: As a percussionist I had been directly involved in the gradual insertion of everyday sounds into the concert hall, from Russolo through Edgard Varese and finally to John Cage where live street sounds were brought directly into the hall. I saw these activities as a way of giving aesthetic credence to these sounds – something I was all for. I began to question the effectiveness of the method, though. Most members of the audience seemed more impressed with the scandal of 'ordinary' sounds placed in a 'sacred' place than with the sounds themselves, and few were able to carry the experience over to a new perspective on the sounds of their daily lives.
I became interested in going a step further. Why limit listening to the concert hall? Instead of bringing these sounds into the hall, why not simply take the audience outside?
By chance Claire and I were able to get a quick lesson in Japanese ink painting at RESOBOX gallery. We learned how to paint cranes.

The painting is an examination of cultural integration. The pickle jar which represents a different cultural heritage. There is also a sour sense of uncertainty represented by the pickles themselves.

Walnut Street Park, Cary, North Carolina, USA
Native Brick
A 1.2 mile promenade is the center focal point of Walnut Street Park, in Cary, North Carolina. The design, realized in four colors of native brick, is of an imaginary plant/vine which weaves itself throughout the plaza. The promenade begins and culminates in a large plaza where the imaginary blossom explodes in color and shape.
