J.M.F. “Bunny” Haase was a Navy Chief photographer who documented all the aviation activities from the early 1920 through the early 1930s at North Island that at the time encompassed the Army’s Rockwell Field and NAS San Diego. His large collection also covers civilian and Army aircraft as well. His air-to-air photographs are featured in many aviation reference books but usually under the credit line of US Navy. Chief Haase also participated in the second Alaskan Aerial Survey in 1929 and was responsible for the first US motion picture of the sun’s eclipse done in 1930 that was done from an aircraft.

Army Medical Department Museum: Dedicated in 1989, the museum traces the history of medicine in the US military from the Revolution to present. A large artifact collection displays the unique and sometimes ghastly history of medical care on the battlefield. There is a large outdoor display of medical evacuation helicopters, ambulances and even a rail car. The iconic statue of a combat medic near the main entrance is a must-see.
Recently acquired artifacts contributed to the Museum through the Foundation are a 1955 Willys MD-A, M170 Front Line Ambulance, an H13 D Model (Korean War) helicopter, and a UH1 Huey from the early Vietnam War.

HERRICK 14 RSOI Training at Camp Bastion
Training within Camp Bastion has been improved significantly with the inception of a new training centre. The primary role of this facility is to conduct Reception, Staging and Onward Integration (RSOI) training for all military personnel arriving in Afghanistan.
The facilities were developed over a period of 3 weeks and include a briefing tent, capable of holding 350 personnel; a headquarters and welfare area, and accommodation and ablution blocks.
Last year an Afghan compound was built to provide realistic training in a representative environment. To this a fully functional driver training centre has been added, which offers training across a wide range of vehicle types. In addition the acquisition of two Roll Over Drill and Egress Training (RODET) mechanisms will enable personnel to practice their escape techniques if the vehicle rolls whilst on patrol.
