Anzac Day 2011 Tribute.
I spent the Easter holidays taking loads of photos. I wanted to try as many techniques as possible.
I tried pinhole, Lens Baby - Muse, macro (Canon mpe65mm) , Custom bokeh hoods, HDR, lenses with doubler's, Infrared (720nm), reflex lens and long exposures. I also dug out my Canon EOS 1D, 5D, 30D and 350D.
This army tank seen in Two Wells.
Has a gun stabilization system from Cadillac-Gage, allowing the tank to fire effectively on the move. It has the "skirts" along the sides to protect the upper tracks, and thermal jacket on the gun barrel to control heating. Uses rectangular rubber blocks fastened to the treads with a single pin instead of the earlier two-pin "shaped" versions. The rubber blocks could be easily replaced with metal X-shaped crampons for movement on ice and snow in the winter.
Leopard AS1 Main Battle Tank.
Leopard tanks first arrived in Australia from Germany in 1976, ending a selection and trial process (against the US M60 series) which started in 1971 when the army decided it needed a replacement for its British Centurions which had served since 1952.
In March 2004, the decision was made to replace the Leopard 1 with reconditioned US M1A1 Abrams AIM. A number of European nations had offered surplus Leopard 2s during the procurement.
The first 18 of 59 M1A1 Abrams arrived in September 2006. The M88A2 Hercules is concurrently replacing the Leopard family of support variants in Australian service.
The Leopard 1 was operated by the 1st Armoured Regiment and was officially withdrawn from service in July 2007. Their guns were never fired in anger.
The tanks carry Army Registration Numbers (ARN). This tank is number 29390.
It can be seen in use in this photo

The Leopard tank arrived at Two Wells war memorial but not without significant effort from members of Two Wells RSL and a big transport operation.
One of 30 in Australia, the historic tank was granted to Two Wells RSL late last year (2010).
The tank was delivered on the back of truck, with a crane lifting the 42 tonne artefact onto a prepared cement slab.
The concrete and labour for the concrete slab, which has cost other councils up to $20,000, was donated.
The RSL plans to release t-shirts with the phrase ‘I got tanked in Two Wells’, which will also feature a picture of the tank.
(I came up with the same idea for the Tank in McLaren Vale and it makes more sence there with all the wine tasting)
Those locals worried about graffiti can be assured members of RSL are doing all they can to minimise the chance of vandalism.
It was sprayed with special anti-graffiti paint.
“If they graffiti it, we can wash it off easily,” Mr Flaherty.
While the tank is now welded shut, lucky members of the public were able to view the inside in personalised tours by Army Sergeant Lindsay Martin.
The four seater tank features a firing distance of 6km with ammunition weighing 40kg.
A plaque with information about the German-built tank will also be added to the war memorial soon.
