Commanding Officer of the First Mentoring Task Force (MTF1), Lieutenant Colonel Jason Blain was accompanied by senior MTF1 staff during a recent reconnaissance of Sajawul and Khuajem Ahmad in the Baluchi Valley Region.

The “recce” provided the CO and his staff an opportunity to understand the on-the-ground situation and to get a sense of the subtle differences between the villages.

The activity began with an Afghan National Army (ANA) led patrol to Sajawul where the party met with key locals over a chai tea to continue shura discussions about security and development in the area.

During the meetings, MTF1 personnel obtained a clearer understanding of the development projects that could be undertaken by the local population with appropriate funding and equipment.

Previous Australian contingents in the Sajawul area set a solid framework for ongoing community support and participation with local tribal elders demonstrating a high level of trust and faith in the MTF, ANA and ISAF.

MTF1 is focused on enhancing relationships with the local people with a view to expanding security and expanding opportunities for wider local development.

Afghan National Army (ANA) leads the patrol out of the base heading towards the shura (Afghan meeting) with village elders, in southern Afghanistan.

Mid Caption:

Leading the way, the Afghan National Army (ANA) take onboard what their Aussie mentors from Mentoring Task Force - Two (MTF-2) have taught them, planning the safest and most direct route to a shura (a meeting) with village elders.

Sergeant Jason Johnson from MTF-2, mentors the ANA with his section of soldiers located at a small patrol base at the southern end of the Baluchi Valley, Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan.

“We get the ANA to lead the patrols. We give them the location and observe them construct a plan from the mentoring they have received from us,” Sergeant Johnson said.

“A small element of Australians soldiers will come on patrol to assist the ANA if required.”

Sergeant Johnson’s role includes mentoring the ANA and liaising with village elders in local shuras, where they discuss International Security Assistance Force funded developments in the area such as roads, schools, and any aid required.

The meetings are also an opportunity for the local community to raise any concerns they have.

“It’s an Afghan tradition to talk over chai (tea) and then, when the locals are ready, it is down to business, discussing the development of projects in the area and concerns within the community which are largely related to insurgent activity,” Sergeant Johnson said.

Army surplus items from World War II were everywhere when I was a kid. We'd go down to the Sunny's Surplus Store and buy all kinds of old military stuff. (In fact, Sunny's got its start by selling nothing but left over U.S. Army gear, and only later started carrying other foreign military goods and commercial camping gear as the old WWII stuff got scarce. As I write this Sunny's is finally going out of business after over 50 years.) I got this surplus canteen (dated 1945) to use while camping with the Boy Scouts. The canteen cup (dated 1949) I bought when I was about 12 for 15 cents from, of all places, the thrift shop at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. If you look closely at the cup, you can still see the price marked on the side in grease pencil. I have never been able to scrub it off entirely. The canteen and the cup have served me well over the years. (Click here and here and here and here to see them in action.)
