Bathed in golden light and wrapped in early morning mist, the Palácio da Pena in Sintra rises like a dream above the forested hills. Its vivid yellow and lilac façades glow against the crisp blue sky, a collision of Romanticism and royal whimsy perched atop the Serra de Sintra. From this terrace, the world below disappears into a sea of clouds — only the sound of wind and distant church bells breaks the stillness.

Built in the 19th century for King Ferdinand II, the palace blends Gothic, Manueline, Moorish, and Renaissance motifs in a uniquely Portuguese symphony of color and form. It’s a place that feels alive, as if the walls themselves remember centuries of fog-drenched mornings like this one.

This is a photo of the centre of Skopje – North Macedonia, along the river Vardar. In one single view you can see exactly what Skopje has become known for today: the massive architectural and sculptural project Skopje 2014. On the left the neo-classical buildings with their domes, the elegant baroque-style lamp posts, and all around on bridges and squares the bronze statues that were installed in large numbers between 2010 and 2016. In the foreground stands one of those bronze figures – a typical example of how Skopje since 2010 has placed its cultural and historical narrative identity into the urban landscape. Many of the bronze statues from this period refer to persons, heroes or symbolic figures that played a role in the region through the centuries. Further ahead you see an equestrian statue on the 15th-century Stone Bridge, the historic symbol of the city. On the right is the white colonnade of the newly built museum complexes along the riverside, such as the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle. And in the far background, high on the hill, lies the old citadel – Skopje Kale. This photo captures new Skopje exactly as it is: a striking mix of Ottoman and Byzantine heritage with recent neo-classical architecture and dozens of monumental statues that now dominate the city’s skyline.

A view across central Skopje along the Vardar river, where old and new collide. Neo-classical museums, baroque streetlights and countless bronze statues from the “Skopje 2014” era line the waterfront, while the 15th-century Stone Bridge and the hilltop fortress Kale still anchor the historic skyline.

Dit is een foto van het centrum van Skopje - Noord-Macedonië, langs de rivier de Vardar. Hier zie je in één blik precies waar Skopje tegenwoordig om bekend staat: het enorme bouw- en sculptuurproject Skopje 2014. Links de neo-klassieke gebouwen met koepels, de sierlijke lantaarnpalen in barokstijl, en overal op bruggen en pleinen bronzen beelden die tussen 2010 en 2016 massaal zijn neergezet. Op de voorgrond staat één van die bronzen figuren – een typisch voorbeeld van de manier waarop Skopje sinds 2010 zijn culturele en historische verhalende identiteit in het stadsbeeld heeft gezet. Veel van de bronzen beelden die in deze periode zijn geplaatst, verwijzen naar personen, helden of symbolen die een rol hebben gespeeld in de regio door de eeuwen heen. Verderop zie je een ruiterstandbeeld op de 15e-eeuwse Steenbrug, hét historische symbool van de stad. Rechts staat de witte colonnade van de nieuwgebouwde museumcomplexen langs de kade, zoals het Archeologisch Museum en het Museum of the Macedonian Struggle. En helemaal achteraan, boven op de heuvel, zie je de oude citadel Skopje Kale liggen. Deze foto vangt het nieuwe Skopje precies zoals het is: een opvallende mix van Ottomaanse en Byzantijnse erfenis met recente neoklassieke architectuur en tientallen monumentale beelden die de skyline van de stad nu domineren.

I don’t have an unique theme for my photography yet. I love too many things. Macro, infrared, beauty in the mundane, abstract, B&W, colours, candid, street photography, landscape, daytime long exposure …... just too many

I like architecture shots. I like architectural details. And I think this is good illustration of what we say “parts are more than the sum” in photography.

Exaltation of the Cross church

The west side adjacent to the palace of Exaltation of the Cross church, built in Byzantine style. Above the entrance - the archangel Gabriel. As the original frame adds even greater value of precious stones, and Livadia Park, emphasizes the beauty of the palace.

According to one of the legends it was founded in 891. Originally it belonged to the Constantinopolitan Patriarchate. The first record of the monastery dates back to 1578. From 1778 (the Christians’ outcome from Crimea) to 1794 the monastery does not function. From 1806 it becomes the base monastery for the Black Sea Fleet hieromonachs. New temples are built: 1816 — the Great Martyr George Temple, 1850 — the Exaltation of the Cross Temple, 1893 — the Cave Church of the Nativity of Christ. The monastery is closed in 1929. It was revived in 1994. In 2000 there started the building of the Great Martyr George Temple, ruined in 1927.

Православный мужской монастырь в Балаклавском районе Севастополя, расположен у мыса Фиолент, на побережье Чёрного моря. По преданию, монастырь в 891 году основали греки-мореплаватели. Как гласит легенда, возле Фиолента их настигла буря, при этом судно чуть не разбилось о скалу. Путешественники попросили святого Георгия Победоносца о помощи, и буря утихла. В благодарность моряки основали на берегу обитель с церковью во имя этого святого.

Fashion Design District in Ghurnata | Curated by Mental Flame within the wider Heliopolis Design District led by Design Point Egypt

In this installation, contemporary fabric architecture rises against the backdrop of historic Heliopolis, creating a dialogue between old and new.

The flowing drapery forms a temporary pavilion that softens the rigidity of the urban fabric, while the heritage tower behind it anchors the scene in the city’s architectural memory.

The result is a spatial moment where past and present overlap, modern expression layered over historical context, revealing how contemporary design can reinterpret and coexist with heritage rather than replace it.
