Casa Vicens is a family residence in Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain), designed by Antoni Gaudí and built for industrialist Manuel Vicens. It was Gaudí's first important work. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Works of Antoni Gaudí" in 2005.

It was built in the period 1883-1889 and is located at Carrer de les Carolines 24, in the Gràcia district of Barcelona.

Restored in the 1990s after decades of neglect, Prague’s most exuberant and sensual building is a labour of love, every detail of its design and decoration carefully considered, every painting and sculpture loaded with symbolism. The restaurant and cafe flanking the entrance are like walk-in museums of art nouveau design; upstairs are half a dozen sumptuously decorated halls that you can visit by guided tour.

The Municipal House stands on the site of the Royal Court, seat of Bohemia’s kings from 1383 to 1483 (when Vladislav II moved to Prague Castle), which was demolished at the end of the 19th century. Between 1906 and 1912 this magnificent art nouveau palace was built in its place – a lavish joint effort by around 30 leading artists of the day, creating a cultural centre that was the architectural climax of the Czech National Revival.

Old houses located in the residential district of Square Ambiorix in Brussels.

Brussels is the capital of Art Nouveau and magnificent structures throughout the capital city are recognized as "world heritage" by UNESCO. The brilliant creative works of Victor Horta, Paul Hankar, as well as those of other architects, bring pleasure to thousands of visitors who enter the private world of these opulent houses every year.

At the turn of the 19th century Brussels went through a period of unrivaled effervescence. The middle classes, merchants and artists opted to have their houses built in the style in vogue: Art Nouveau, marking the beginning of modern architecture and design.

The Austrian architect Josef Hoffman and painter Gustav Klimt, the French architect Hector Guimard all joined the Belgian architects Victor Horta en Paul Hankar, Henry van de Velde, the furniture designer Serrurier-Bovy and the jeweler Philippe Wolfers to get their inspiration or produce themselves for the first time in a more liberal city.

This neon hasn't shone in years... And it's been years since anyone other than ghosts stayed at the Surf Hotel in Coney Island. As of last year there was still one seedy hotel along Surf Ave. (the last street before the boardwalk & beach), the Shore Hotel, but this year ALL of its windows have been replaced with bright orangey wooden boards...(Without any of the trompe l'oeil decals, used in Harlem when buildings had been condemned in the 70s and beyond, to give the impression someone was still living there.)

Who knows how long this building will be standing? The whole neighborhood has been slated for MAJOR tear-downs and "renovations." The plans haven't been totally agreed on as yet, but the word on the street was that this summer would be the last of the "good old Coney Island" that we love, warts 'n' all...

The fact that Coney Island (the 'real' version) will soon be a mere memory is tremendously sad. The only people who seem to count these days are the bigwig real estate moguls, who have BIG plans to do to Coney Island what they did to Times Square...to remove anything resembling authenticity!

I deeply love Coney Island. My only regret is that I live (literally) on the opposite end of the city, so I don't get there very often. So yesterday I made a pilgrimage there to soak up all the wonderful, original & *authentic* atmosphere. I'll go again soon, before the Summer is over. These are the last weeks of an era...

The former hotel "Metropol" was built according to the project of the famous architect Oscar Emilevich Wegener in the XIX century in the Art Nouveau style. The hotel was once one of the best hotels, was listed in the first category on a par with the villa "Elena" and the hotel "Oreanda". It was at the Metropol Hotel that a dinner party was given to the participants in the celebrations of laying the foundation of the Livadia Royal Palace.

As I mentioned in my last upload (I think), I am spending some time in Minnesota. So, I'll be uploading some pictures from that trip, piecemeal. One of the more interesting places we visited (upon someone's recommendation) was this Cambodian Buddhist Temple called Watt Munisotaram. I don't know much about anything I photographed in terms of symbolism (if anyone does, please feel free to annotate!)

The temple was very much in the middle of nowhere. Very unexpected. These banisters were particularly beautiful.

Taken somewhere in Minnesota.

The oldest part of the complex is represented by the Shrine of San Vittore in Golden Sky , built in the fourth century by Bishop Maternus to preserve the remains of St. Victor and important example of early Christian architecture. Adjacent to it, heading north, the bishop of Milan Ambrose built, between 379 and 386, the Martyrum Basilica, the first version of the early Christian basilica, whose name came from the fact that it was built in an area where martyrs of the Roman persecutions had been buried. The name was changed to the present one later when Ambrose was buried inside it. The current version of the Romanesque basilica with three naves with vaulted ribbed cruise, is characterized by an alternating system of major and minor pillars that allow the transition from four spans in the main nave to eight in the lateral naves. However, there is no agreement on the exact dating of almost all structural parts of the basilica, in the light of the many changes that have taken place over the centuries. The absidiale part is in any case the oldest part, assigned to the centuries VIII, IX or X depending on the author. The church was heavily damaged during the bombings of the Second World War, which destroyed in 1943 especially the outside of the porch, damaged the dome of the basilica and other areas of the basilica complex, and caused the loss of significant art works, including a fresco by Tiepolo that decorated the ceiling of the sacristy. Immediately after the war the restoration works took start. They were completed in the fifties, bringing the church to its former glory.

Framed by stone columns, this glimpse into a quiet moment along the Wien River captures two figures walking through Vienna’s architectural layers — from historic railings to distant high-rises. The Palau de la Música Catalana (English: Palace of Catalan Music) is a concert hall in Barcelona. Designed in the Catalan modernista style by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, it was built between 1905 and 1908 for the Orfeó Català, a choral society founded in 1891 that was a leading force in the Catalan cultural movement that came to be known as the Renaixença (Catalan Rebirth). It was inaugurated February 9, 1908.

In 1997, the Palau de la Música Catalana was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
