The Fredericks-White House was carefully sited and built around an original 19th century fireplace left on the site by an old farmer's house. The fireplace is of typical South African construction and was the only remains of the original farmer's house. Glenn Murcutt designed the house entirely around this fireplace up in the hills of Jamberoo, New South Wales. The owners are not farmers, but their house is located on a dairy farm operated by the neighbors. In case you are wondering, South Africans do make up a significant portion of the Australian population because of a historical trend of South African immigration.

One of the best-known covered bridges is the 204-foot single-span Burr arch truss known as Meem's Bottom Covered Bridge in Mount Jackson. The Meem's Bottom Bridge was constructed in 1892-93 from materials cut and quarried nearby for the massive arch supports and stone abutments, which extended 10 feet below the riverbed. It was deeded to the Highway Department in the 1930's in return for assuming its maintenance.
This long span over the North Fork of the river carried traffic for more than 80 years before being burned by vandals on Halloween 1976. After salvaging the original timbers, the bridge was reconstructed and eventually undergirded with steel beams and concrete piers. The bridge was reopened to traffic in 1979 and is still in operation to date. From www.virginia.org/site/description.asp?attrID=40588

I really can't find much on the history of this mill in Rockbridge County Virginia. The original owners of the mill were Jack and Pearl Potter.
The Potter Family traces it's farming history back 7 generations. In the mid 1800s, Issac Potter began farming along Buffalo Creek near Collierstown. The family later owned and operated the mill at the bend of Collierstown Road, Potter-Wade Mill. Generation three, Ray Lee first share cropped, and later purchased the property that is now Churchview Farm. From www.buffalocreekbeef.com/The_Family_Farm.html

The Bedford County Courthouse, built in 1930, is the fourth courthouse building. Elements of its Classical Revival style include Flemish-bond brickwork, an Ionic-order porch, Corinthian-order columns on the roof cupola, and a large triangular pediment with a decorative frieze. On the courthouse lawn are several monuments honoring the brave men of Bedford who have served in the country's wars. A portion of the rock from Sharp Top mountain, which was included in the Washington Monument, recognizes the Battle of Point Pleasant. Noteworthy is the D-Day memorial, commemorating Bedford's considerable losses on that day. In 1994 Bedford was selected as the site for a National D-Day Memorial.

The Sinking Creek Bridge (also known as Clover Hollow Bridge), a 70-foot span currently maintained by Giles County, was left in place for the property owner when a new bridge was built in 1949. It was built circa 1916 with modified Howe trusses.
It is located just off Route 601 between Route 42 and Route 700, north of Route 460.

The white fins and roof of the Arthur & Yvonne Boyd Education Centre are designed to push air into the rooms to create cooling cross breezes. In each of the 32 bedrooms, windows can open up to the outdoors in varying levels of exposure. The windows can be opened entirely to allow a full breeze through the room on a hot day, opened entirely but with mosquito screens to keep the bugs out at night, or closed and sealed to trap heat indoors during the winter months. Glenn Murcutt once remarked that a building should have multiple layers of exposure to the outdoors that work much like clothes - they can be taken off or layered on depending on the weather conditions.
The Jack's Creek Covered Bridge was designed by Walter G. Weaver of Woolwine and constructed by Charles Vaughan of Buffalo Ridge, made of oak, built to serve Jack's Creek Primitive Baptist Church for which the bridge was named after. A steel beam bridge replaced it in 1932. The Jack's Creek Covered Bridge was widened and received a new roof in 1969 followed by a full restoration by the Virginia Department of Highways in 1974 at a cost of approximately $4,550.00. Every June, the bridge is the site (along with nearby Bob White Covered Bridge) of the Patrick County Covered Bridge Festival.

Sometimes when I take treks on the back roads of Virginia I find myself in places that seem familiar. I had that experience in Rockbridge county the other day. And ran across this barn. Two years earlier I posted this same barn on Flickr and it reached the front page . Below in the the comments you will see what two years have meant to this landscape.

The Normandy-style Carriage House (built of James River granite), the three-storied Stone Barn and the Water Tower were designed by Noland and Baskervill and constructed in the early 20th century. These principal buildings (in addition to the three-storied Garage, a granite compost house, chicken coop and gatehouse) all were connected by the old service road that begins at Maymont's Hampton Street entrance. Arrayed along a high ridge, this village-like assemblage of picturesque outbuildings would have been visible to guests entering along the magnolia-lined drive. These buildings have been adaptively renovated as public spaces and for institutional use.

Woodson's Mill, also known as Piney River Mill, is a historic grist mill located at Lowesville, Nelson County, Virginia. It is believed to have been built originally for Guiliford Campbell in 1794. The present building has undergone three periods of structural and mechanical improvements, most of which date to the nineteenth century. Sometime after 1900, Dr. Julian B. Woodson added a sophisticated roller mill system for the production of fine white flour and he built his office into the west end of the mill. The mill continues to function with two water wheels and houses an operating cider press.[2]
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992 from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodson's_Mill
