Revisiting what I shot last week, I really appreciated the symmetry in this one, also the contrast between the new amd old architecture.

The Sydney Opera House by Jorn Utzon; The famous white sails of the Opera House were called structurally impossible by engineers. Utzon solved the problem by building the "sails" out of identical concrete ribs connected together with steel. There are 2,200 ribs in the Opera House and more steel than the entire Sydney Harbour Bridge.

El Tovar Hotel, the premier lodging facility at the Grand Canyon, opened its doors in 1905 and was most recently renovated in 2005. The former Harvey House is just 20 ft from the south rim of the Grand Canyon. The dark wood dining room boasts an incredible view. In the past, El Tovar has hosted such luminaries as Theodore Roosevelt, Albert Einstein, Western author Zane Grey, and many others. The hotel is also featured in the 1983 film, National Lampoon's Vacation.

The hotel is one of only a handful of Harvey House facilities that are still in operation. Designed by Charles Whittlesey, Chief Architect for the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway it is an fine example of National Park Service Rustic architecture.

Tamboerije is a new home for the elderly in Best, Holland. Specific for this model were the vertical rooftiled walls. Integrating the bend windows into those was a little bit of a challenge, but all worked out nicely in the end.

Museum D'Orsay, my favourite museum at Europe. Previously, it was a train station, that's the why of the architecture. Best part is the right site, Monet, Rembrandt, and my fav artists.

Downtown Sydney is visible from most of Sydney Harbour. In this photo, a sailboat drifts in front of a spectacular view of the city and the Royal Botanic Gardens. Sailing is a major hobby of Australians. The buildings pictured are part of the Central Business District of Sydney. They stand on the site of the original British colony of Sydney where the first buildings were erected in 1788.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge, which was completed in 1932, is an iconic bridge of the world that spans 3,770 feet across the harbour. This view of the bridge at sunset gives you a sense of its beauty and its dominance of the Sydney skyline. Directly to the west of the bridge pylons is Luna Park, a fair ground influenced by Coney Island in New York City. The park is a source of controversy because it uses social and political commentary as one of its thematic attractions, but it is also well known for its rides and food.

Skateboarding is a major sport in Australia. In this photo, a college student practices his skateboard tricks in an abandoned pool along Bondi Beach. The pool and surrounding area were converted into a skateboard park on the beach after it was overtaken by skating enthusiasts. There are now 4 sets of ramps and slopes for skateboarders to practice before going out to the water for a surf.

I cut through the Barbican centre this morning, to drop back a library book on my way into work. Some pleasing symmetry in the 1960s 'brutalist' architecture....

This is part of green college these days, but it used to be an important observatory back in its day. The telescope is long gone, and the building now contains a common room and dining room. And very nice it is too - the architecturally best observatory in europe, according to the experts, whoever they are.
