Across the city of Tokyo at night

☞ See the original photo in 1st comment below. • Created with the sadly no longer available (November 2014) Amazing Circles tool of the former dumpr.net.

This is a picture of the law courts building in Winnipeg, Canada, a National Historic Site of Canada. I left it a bit dark to give a spooky feel to the image and I also tried an HDR treatment in Lightroom. I liked how it turned out.

Potsdamerplatz Berlin

The site was originally a bustling city centre in the early 20th century. Most of the buildings were destroyed or damaged during World War II. From 1961 on, most of the area became part of the No Man's Land of the Berlin Wall, resulting in the destruction of the remaining buildings. After the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989, the square became the focus of attention again, as a large (some 60 hectares), attractive location which had suddenly become available in the centre of a major European capital city. As part of a redevelopment effort for the area, the center was constructed. The centre was designed by Helmut Jahn and construction was completed in 2000 at a total cost of €750M.

Santiago Calatrava - Liège

Location: 449 South Winchester Blvd., San Jose, CA

Positioned in front of the Century dome theaters and down the street from the Winchester Mystery House, Bob’s Big Boy served up burgers and shakes from the mid-1960s to the late 1980s. The Bob’s building, with its rock pillars and convex roofline, was designed by the Los Angeles based architectural firm, Armet and Davis, and is a prime example of “Coffee Shop Modern.” Fortunately, when the folks at Flames took over from Bob, they did little to alter the building’s exterior. Today, Flames Coffee Shop on Winchester Blvd. looks much like its predecessor, although one thing you’ll notice is that the original sign’s characteristic spike has been shortened.

This building caught my eye and the more I look at it, it feels more like socialist architecture from the 60s and 70s than something I should find in an alleyway in Toronto wandering around.

I shot this back in 2011 and came across it by complete accident at the time. I've driven around twice now looking for it, never found it again. Half of the parking lot was flooded which you can see in the next shot. I'd love to see more buildings like this in my city."

Architects;Anna Heringer & Eike Roswag. 2005-06.

Vernacular and craft-based design.

"The utilisation of local materials and skills has been key to

Anna Heringer and Eike Roswag's design for the Meti School in

Rudrapur, Bangladesh, built in 2005. The building was designed for the

Bangladeshi NGO, Dipshika, who look to reduce migration to cities by

improving village life through providing better facilities and

employment opportunities. The school was designed to promote creative,

student-centred learning and its construction was aimed at using local

knowledge and providing jobs for the villagers. The architects refined

the vernacular building technique of using wet loam and straw by

adding a damp proof course and brick foundations, whilst an upper

storey was built using bamboo construction. Heringer and Roswag

organised the construction of the school over a period of four months

with only the foundation being built by a commercial company. The rest

of the building was constructed by hand by local builders who were

trained by specialists from Germany and with the help of architecture

students from Bangladesh and Austria."

Ronald McDonald House, Valkenburg, Netherlands, NL / Friedensreich Hundertwasser / 2006 – 2007

This is a house designed for the families of children with handicaps and serious medical conditions for the Foundation Stichting Ronald McDonald Kindervallei, Valkenburg aan de Geul, Netherlands. Executing architect: Heinz M. Springmann

Dates: design 2004, Start of construction: May 2006 Inauguration: September 2007

After the Ronald McDonald House that Hundertwasser designed for the German city of Essen was so well received, the Ronald McDonald Kinderfonds in De Bilt NL approached the Hundertwasser Foundation in Vienna, asking whether it would also be possible to have a house designed according to Hundertwasser's principles, for the families of children with handicaps and serious medical conditions, in the south of the Netherlands. The New Zealand Spiral Monument, designed by Hundertwasser in 1987/88 and planned by architect Peter Pelikan was used as a model for this project. The Rainbow Spiral of Valkenburg is the only Hundertwasser architectural project in the Netherlands.
