Until the early 20th century the Haddington District Lunatic Board was responsible for a central sanatorium or asylum whose intake was drawn from the whole of the county of East Lothian. Comforts for the inmates were supplied by a form of competitive tendering, demonstrated by this document.
This is an application for tender for the supply of tobacco, clay pipes and snuff to the Haddington District Lunatic Asylum.
The inauguration of the National Health Service in 1948 revolutionised health care in Britain. Hitherto in East Lothian, health provision was met by a variety of private charitable and statutory institutions. Most towns had cottage hospitals and isolation or fever hospitals (for infectious diseases). Care of the mentally ill was the responsibility of the Lunacy Board. All other eventualities were dealt with by Edinburgh institutions such as the Royal Infirmary.

Here is how it works:
Our all steel design uses several perfectly sized heavy duty thick wall tubes for maximum heat exchanger surface area, superior airflow volume, minimum burn through, and maximum combustion area volume. The tubes are welded together forming a channel that is filled with cool home air. The tubes then heat the air as it passes through them. Hot air is then blown back into the your home with velocity. This adds conduction from the hot coal coals and convection from the flame, heating to the radiant heat of a fireplace, recovering otherwise lost energy or BTU from the embers and flame of your fire.
The AC fans plug into a standard 110 VAC wall outlet (DC optional for solar panel, wind, solar cell, photo voltaic cell off grid or grid tie applications), they are quiet running at a measured 50 db or less decibels, and rated at 100 CFM each. With the option of a variable speed fan control when mood is more important than heat output you can reduce the background hum of our heat exchangers in operation for the perfect ambiance.
Customers have observed how the warmth generated by these Heat Exchangers can circulate to the adjoining rooms in your home. A customer sent us many thanks when our grate prevented the freezing of his pipes in -20 weather when his natural gas furnace broke and the part was over a week away. Painting and markings:
Well, even though the aircraft would probably have been delivered to Belgium in a Dark Green/Dark Earth/Sky livery and then transferred to north Africa, I decided to use a typical French livery in Khaki/Dark Brown/Blue Gray – inspired by the Heller SBC and for the odd look of the resulting aircraft.
The latter would be enhanced through FAFL markings from a Colorado Decals sheet – they actually belong to a Curtiss Hawk 75, based in Syria 1941.
One very inspiring fact about the French tricolor-paint scheme is that actually no aircraft looked like the other – except for a few types, every aircraft had an individual scheme with more or less complexity or even artistic approach.
Even the colors were only vaguely unified: Field mixes were common, as well as mods with other colors that were mixed into the basic three tones!
I settled for a scheme I found on a FAFL MS.406, with strongly feathered edges between the paint fields and a rather cloudy paint application. That, coupled with some serious aluminum shining through, creates a very interesting (if not somewhat shabby?) look.
Interior surfaces were painted in Cockpit Green (Humbrol 78) while the landing gear well parts of the wings were painted in the same light blue gray as the aircraft’s underside and the struts in Aluminum.
The aircraft was weathered well with a black ink wash and some dry-painting, simulating dust and sun bleaching on the upper surfaces.
As a last step, everything was sealed under a coat of matt acrylic varnish.
