Day 310

- Applebox Boy

- stood on appleboxes all day just like Tom Cruise!

- Doing a no texting PSA with Anthony, Jay, PJ & Carlos. Can't really see Nathan back there.

The reserve is a very special place when it comes to trees. I am not good at identifying Australian trees, but even I understood there was a hugely diverse canopy above me, especially as we moved around different areas within the reserve. To give an idea of the types of trees that are present, here’s an extract from the ) “An open forest or woodland community dominated by Mountain Gum (Eucalyptus dalrympleana) and Broad-leaved Peppermint (E. dives) occurs on level to gently inclined land at higher elevations in the nature reserves. Associated tree species include snow gum (E. pacuflora) and Acacia falciformis. Sheltered valleys and south-facing slopes support and open forest or woodland community dominated by Ribbon Gum (Eucalyptus viminalis). Associated canopy species may include Mountain Gum, Red Stringybark (E. macrorhyncha), Snow Gum and Applebox (E. bridgesiana).”

Amazing. Happy tree-mendous Tuesday, everyone! [Winburndale Nature Reserve, NSW]

Mr Locks father was a hairdresser working from his home Knowle House in Station Road Headcorn. He had found a suitable barbers seat for me in the garden!

Eucalyptus bridgesiana - growing next to the bicycle path that runs beside Bindubi Street in Canberra, Australia.

This magnificent old woodland tree is very big and very old.

These are fruit crates waiting to be used later in the year, probably for apples.

Eucalyptus bridgesiana - in the fields off William Hovell Drive, near Drake Brockman Drive in Canberra ACT. This tree is old and very healthy. In the background is the Molonglo Valley, which has seen much destruction and this will continue with development planned. I hope this tree, which has been alive longer than any human, survives the invasion.

Note: this was my first photo to receive 100 views, on 04/07/2009.

Eucalyptus bridgesiana - near Culquhoun Street in Kambah, Canberra ACT.

This Apple Box survived the 2003 fire, hence the mostly black bark that persists on the trunk. Strangely, there is another Eucalypt growing right up next to it - the one with the pale trunk, which incidentally is a Scribbly Gum or Eucalyptus rossii.

Eucalyptus bridgesiana - growing in the playground of the St Clare of Assisi Primary School in the suburb of Conder, Canberra, Australia.

This tree would provide nice shade for children on hot days. This tree is very old, at least a couple of hundred years and going strong, I reckon.

Eucalyptus bridgesiana - in Springbett Street in Kambah, Canberra ACT.

This huge old Apple Box stands near the old Kambah Woolshed and the local scout hall can be seen in the background. This was once an old rural property known as Sulwood, on the banks of Village Creek in the Tuggeranong Valley.

This old apple box could have fetched five shillings for returning it, but how many young seedlings has it supported in its life?

The ledgendary van.

Setup shot for this, except I think the two rims had flags on them and were closer together.

Keith, our 2nd AC, assembles what is known as a 'Bungie Cam' for a 2-shot on the bench. This was the first time I had seen a setup like this. During this scene, we actually had two cameras rolling simultaneously. 'A' camera was on the Steadicam, and 'B' was the 'bungie cam' pictured above.

Eucalyptus bridgesiana - in a large area of urban open space, containing a small playground, on Mannheim Street near Bissenberger Crescent in Kambah, Canberra ACT.

There are two trees close together but viewed from a distance, the form can look like just one tree. I've nicknamed them the twins. They are currently both in flower, which is usual for March in Canberra.
