A but-but tree (or apple box or eucalyptus bridgesiana) on the edge of the town centre of Beechworth, an old gold-mining town in north eastern Victoria, Australia.
An unusual specimen, estimated to be 300 years old. It is thought to be the union of two trees with a central cavity. The heavy galling is a response to human intervention, and possibly so too is the overall shape. A local guide suggested to us that aboriginals might have grafted two trees together, while the galling is at least in part a response to later nailing of steel spikes and horse shoes by europeans.
In my original description I omitted to mention that in 1991 the tree lost some branches after storm damage.
As I've said before, most Australians love their gum trees. This one, though unique in structure, nevertheless has one evocative characteristic of the species -- the openness of the canopy that allows dappled sunlight and shadows of the upper branches to play over the lower parts of the tree.

The Polish Pavilion designed for Expo 2015 is being realized through the use of a motif of a wooden apple box, normally used in shipment as a packaging for fruits and vegetables.

A little last bit of Isabella before I gear up for next week's shoots. We were channeling American Apparel a little bit.
Lighting was...in the shot! Profoto head with a bare Zoom reflector, maybe 10' away or so. I'm standing on an applebox here to get a little extra height. That's white seamless taped against the grey back wall in the studio.

The Vernon Fruit Union (VFU) was incorporated May 15, 1913 to act as a fruit packing co-operative for the North Okanagan. The first president was George Heggie who served from 1913-1920. Originally, the Vernon Fruit Union began operations on the Canadian Pacific Railway trackage in Vernon in the Dolph Browne building. The Union also operated branch plants in the BX district, Coldstream, Long (now known as Kalamalka) Lake and Lavington. In 1919, the Vernon Fruit Union closed all the branch plants and consolidated operations in the old Vernon Storage Co. building. In 1920, the VFU built the Oyama plant and in 1923 took over a small packing plant in Okanagan Centre. The Woodsdale plant was constructed in 1936. In 1940, a by-products plant was set up adjacent to the Woodsdale plant in order to process McIntosh Red apples into apple juice. In 1944, the VFU built an additional plant in Oyama and in 1948 the Winfield plant was constructed. Also in 1948, extensive new cold storage operations were built in Vernon. In 1958, the Salmon Arm Farmers Exchange ceased to operate and many of their members joined the VFU. During 1961, the VFU purchased the Oyama Packing Plant of B.C. Fruit Shippers and accepted all of their members. From 1968 to 1988, the Vernon Fruit Union operated a retail outlet which included hardware, feed and groceries. In 1989, the Union's head office, packing plant and storage plant were moved to the Union's packing house in Winfield. At that time the name of the organization changed to the Okanagan North Growers Co-operative and the original Vernon Storage Co. building, along with modern additions, was torn down.

Inside the market in Apple Hill, Terry inspects the red delicious apples for any bruises. There have been extensive studies on how growers can prevent bruises to apples. And they still get bruised.
