Virginia National Guard field artillery Soldiers take part in a demonstration of 400 years of Virginia artillery during Military Through the Ages March 20, 2016, at Jamestown Settlement in Williamsburg, Virginia. Maj. Gen. Timothy P. Williams, the Adjutant General of Virginia, presented awards in a variety of categories to the top re-enactment groups as determined by a panel of judges as well as members of the public and the re-enactors themselves. Soldiers from the Hampton-based Battery B, 1st Battalion, 111th Field Artillery Regiment, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team explained the capabilities of the M119A2 howitzer, answered questions about the Guard and represented the modern military at the event that featured hundreds of historical re-enactors showing how uniforms, weapons and military tactics evolved through the centuries. During the demonstration, they conducted a crew swap with re-enactors portraying the Norfolk Light Artillery Blues. The 1st Battalion, 111th Field Artillery, was originally constituted as the 1st Battalion Artillery, Virginia Volunteers and organized on Nov. 8, 1877, from existing units to include the Norfolk Light Artillery Blues, now Battery B, and the First Company, Richmond Howitzers, now Battery A. The Virginia National Guard traces the traditions of Citizen-Solider service to the settlement’s founding in May 1607 and considers Jamestown to be its birthplace. Since 1607 when Capt. John Smith organized a militia to defend the colony there has not been a day without a military presence in Virginia to defend freedom at home and overseas.
