Sandstone injectite & granite in the Precambrian of Colorado, USA.
Seen here is an incredibly rare type of rock. This is a sandstone injectite dike in granite in the Front Range of Colorado.
Dikes are planar igneous intrusions that cut across country rocks. (See: www.flickr.com/photos/jsjgeology/albums/72157632467411234) Common lithologies in igneous dikes include granite and basalt/diabase. Some dikes are composed of sedimentary material - such clastic dikes form when material fills in fractures in other rocks. (See: www.flickr.com/photos/jsjgeology/albums/72157711855111128)
This dike is composed of lithified sand with granules and pebbles. The surrounding rocks are coarsely-crystalline granites of the Pikes Peak Granite - much of it displays grusolithic weathering. Angular pieces of non-sheared, wall rock granite are in the dike. The dike fill is ~90% quartz sand and ~10% potassium feldspar sand. Mudstone pebbles have been reported from some examples. The clastic dikes in this part of Colorado have been known since the 1890s - gold explorers examined them. For over 100 years, the sandstone dikes have been interpreted as injectites (forcefully injected sand intrusives) - these are some of the largest on Earth. Major and minor sandstone dikes occur - some are over 100 meters across. About 200 dikes have been mapped, plus questionable examples in Boulder County. The dikes are well-cemented and solid in places and crumbly at other sites. Some compound injections are known, representing multiple injection events.
The origin of Colorado's sandstone injectite dikes has long been a mystery. The basic idea of overpressured, non-lithified, sandy material being forcefully injected downward into fractured granite is generally accepted, but the timing and the exact source of the material is traditionally undetermined and controversial. Many researchers concluded that the Cambrian-aged Sawatch Sandstone was the source of the sand, because it is the basal Phanerozoic unit atop this area's Precambrian crystalline basement rocks. Did the Sawatch get remobilized during the Laramide Orogeny (= late Mesozoic to early Cenozoic mountain-building event that formed the true Rocky Mountains)? That's a strange idea - it's implausible that a Cambrian sandstone would stay nonlithified for over one-third of a billion years. Some think that injection occurred during the Ancestral Rockies Uplift (Late Paleozoic), or the Sawatch got remobilized in the Early Paleozoic. Regardless of timing, how can a ~5 meter thick Sawatch Sandstone deposit be the source for 100 meter thick sandstone dikes? Maybe the Sawatch was originally thicker, but is now mostly eroded away. Another interpretation is that these are thin and thick fault slices.
Detrital zircon analysis of sandstone injectite dikes in central Colorado has shown that the original source of sandy material is a long eroded-away, late Precambrian-aged unit that's been designated the Tava Sandstone.

Another day to myself, and a long overdue outing for this remarkable Collectif skirt. My old green version of the same was favourited recently - I only wish I still had it. However, this and the currently owned red one more than make up for its absence.

For those who like geometric forms. The bridge railing points directly to the crest of the first falls at Corbett's Glen. I don't know why I never took this shot before. It's kind of interesting. Allen's Creek makes and abrupt left turn as it goes under the bridge.
After my trip to the Arctic, where I never did get to see the aurora, this was a very rewarding event. In spite of the hordes of black flies which might as well have eaten me alive, I was truly happy with what I had documented, all in the window of just half an hour!

Not much in the way of post-production was needed here; the subject itself has a very strange perspective feel to it, which I managed to capture decently in the shot.

In dorsal view the hind angles of the scutellum (the black and yellow projecting "shelf" at the rear of the thorax) are gently rounded. This compares with the angular corners of Anthidiellum. The rear edge of the scutellum also curves slightly. In Anthidiellum this is almost a straight line.
One of the several new agates I found in the Doebbler caliche pits on March 9, 2008. It has anglular shapes which may indicate it formed between crystals or brecciated rock, such as limestone.
Elsa and Anna have been completely deboxed from the Frozen doll set, and are posing standing up side by side, supported by Kaiser doll stands (not included).
They have the legs that were introduced with the 2012 Disney Store Classic Princess 12'' dolls. That is, they have hard plastic legs with ball jointed hips, external hinged knee joints, and ball jointed ankles. Anna on the right has black plastic boots while Elsa has light blue green flat shoes. Since Anna's boots have heels, at 11 1/2'' tall she stands about 1/4'' taller than Elsa. But to the top of their hairdos, they are both about 11 3/4'' tall.
Anna's skirt and top is satin with a printed floral design. Unfortunately the dark blue skirt is unhemmed, and already has frayed edges. I'm afraid that it will start unraveling if it is handled too roughly. She has a thin pink velvet cape that has nice heart shaped closures in the front. She has a black bodice, with a light green long sleeved blouse that is sewn to the bodice. She has green velvet mittons over her hands. She has a removable gray and pink velvet cap over her head, fastened by a clear plastic band in the back. She has tall black boots with gold decoration in the front, pointy toes, and short brown heel.
Anna has a round face, with light complexion, rusty red orange medium length hair that is braided into two pigtails. Her right pigtail has a white streak. She has large green eyes that are glancing to her right, very densely packed black eyelashes, no eyeshadow, and brown and orange brows that are rather flat. Her nose and cheeks are covered in brown freckles, she has a small pointy nose, and a small mouth with very thin red lips in a slight smirk.
Elsa has two layered gown. The lower layer consists of a blue green satin skirt with a slit in the front, and a dark blue green bodice that is covered in gold glitter. It has long pale sheer blue organza sleeves. Sewn to the bodice is a floor length robe that drapes around the front in an overlapping fashion. It is made of clear organza that is overlayed with a blue green pattern of glitter depicting large snow flakes and icicles. All the glitter makes the robe rather stiff. She has blue green flat shoes that match her skirt.
Elsa has a small angular face, and a very pale complexion. Her skin is almost white in color, with a touch of pinkish purple in her face. Her hair is a very light blonde, and gelled into a dramatic series of large curls in swept back from her forehead, except for a single curl over her left forehead. Most of her hair is braided into a long ponytail that reaches her hips. She has large blue eyes glancing to her left. She has very densely packed black eyelashes, pinkish purple eyeshadow, and thin straight gray eyebrows. She has a small pointy nose, and a small mouth with very thin blood red lips in a closed mouth smile. Her cheeks are lightly rouged. Her face has an elfin appearance, although her ears are round, rather than narrow and pointed.
They are both beautiful and faithful reproductions of the lead animated characters from Frozen. But with Elsa's super pale purple pink skin, exotic, elfin facial features, big blue eyes, blood red lips, elegant hairdo over her head together with long braided light blonde hair, and ice blue glittery outfit, she is the standout of the doll set.

First Look
This doll set was introduced at the D23 Expo on August 11, 2013 in limited quantities. I was lucky enough to get a set (only one set was sold per Guest). I am photographing the dolls boxed, during deboxing, and fully deboxed. I have already posted a sneak peek of them fully deboxed, joining my favorite dolls on my Disney Doll Desktop Display.
They are the lead characters in the upcoming Disney animated movie Frozen, based on the The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen. The movie is scheduled to be released on November 27, 2013.
