A light lunch of things that are past their sell by date, but within the use by safety period.

Delicious and nutritious while preserving my cash.

Eggs and red Leicester cheese.

Steamed spinach and parsley.

Tomatoes in oil and vinegar.

Turkey bacon (whatever that might be!)

Damson ketchup.

And mendi spices for extra interest.

An interesting book launch, perhaps. Being held at the Quakers' place, I don't expect there will be any fizz to make the evening go with a swing.

Always loved these creatures.

I liked the roughness of the shop window too. Strange scratches.

Sunshine and warmth bring people back to Dalton Square at lunchtime.

A few pigeons, but not many, remind me of Tom Lehrer's song in response to Boston's pigeon control program back in the 50s:

Confusingly, the church in the background is Saint Pancras. A fine looking portico.

Lots of people moving like a wave. It was unnerving.

We once had a decaying oak tree in our garden, where stag beetles used to thrive.

I saw this one in London some years ago. They look fierce, but are just trying to get through the day as best they can, just like you and me.

My winter house guests are getting ready to leave, now that spring is here.

Andrew Carnegie was born in Scotland and made his fortune in America. He endowed many libraries in UK, including this one. I don't think I'm being overly -cynical in thinking this was tax deductible. Nevertheless, many people had the opportunity for learning and advancement that they might otherwise not have had.

To support your mental health, it's important to be realistic about things.

When setting objectives, be

Specific about the aim

Measurable - how do you know what success looks like

Achievable - aim for something that you can do eventually

Relevant - do something that means something to you

Time based - when will you start and finish

These pretty cobbles were laid in front of a local grandee's house by French prisoners of war. The pattern is unique in this area. At least it provided a chance to be in the open air for a few days.

Cooled, the pears are boxed to go in the fridge.

I half expect to see some forgotten creature.

This one started as raw and after fossicking around for a while, looks like this. Not convinced the jpg from the phone is much different.

A shop is being refurbished.

I love this old glass; it has very slight flows and ripples that are absent from modern float glass.

It may be June but flaming it isn't. I'll be happier when at least two of these floats sink.

Pausing in the sun. The red squirrel benches are all over the area. The red squirrel was the emblem of the old Furness Railway, and a number of replicas of these railway benches were made in 1996, which was also the year of the red squirrel. For every bench sold the council donated towards an effort to preserve the habitat of these endangered animals.

Comfortable to sit on and take a moment to take in the view.

With just a handful of strawberries left, what to do? Slice them up, and whip up some Chantilly cream. Pike into a small bowl and decorated with some torn mint leaves.

Ready in moments but I'll remember this for quite a while.

Small and dense.

Nice with coffee.

The local water company had a pop up information stand at the local mall the other day. Giving useful advice to avoid freezing pipes and wasting water. They gave me this ice scraper 'free'.

Imagine my amusement to read that water bills are going up again, 'to cover investment in infrastructure'. The share price is up 30% over the year, so dividends should be up, too. I should be grateful for my piece of plastic.

I love laundry day and it's so nice to be able to dry in sunlight again.

The plants benefit from the extra humidity.

I'm not a train enthusiast but I enjoy seeing unusual trains. This Pullman train is painted in Nanking Blue. It's some kind of excursion rather than a scheduled service, and 'fine dining' is available onboard.

Sunlight splits through a crystal and lands here

Today was time for cheesy beans again. Too boring for words so i browned some finely chopped onions with garlic and a smidgeon of cayenne pepper which i mixed into the beans. Topped with a cheese and crushed cracker topping and garnished with my tomato and red onion jam. Baked for 10 minutes. No leftovers so i guess the people liked it. Cheese topped rolls to go on the side. About 70p per serve.

In the city, it was not the invasion we were expecting. But it was the invasion we got.

Baked beans in tomato sauce have been produced in Britain since the 1880s, and became popular after an advertising campaign in 1927.

The medical people say they're good for you, containing protein, fiber, and vitamins. They're relatively cheap and take little effort to produce a light supper - beans on toast.

Seeing these on my way to work was so uplifting. The feeling lasted all morning.

Having added stock - I used a mixture of chicken and veggies stocks - brought to boil then simmered for another 15 minutes, this is the result.

A seagull stands on the station roof. I've never seen a seagull's foot from underneath before.

My brief is to make food with supermarket ingredients. Today I made soup with canned chicken, sweet corn, and mushrooms.

This serving works out to be 95p including fuel, for 40 serves.

Spring onions (on special) added some color.

Added a cornflour slurry to thicken. Potato would do the same job.

White onions and garlic to frame the flavors.

Makes a change from all veggies and was received well.

An ingenious use of a safe and delicious food to boot.

Originally known as the Storey Institute, it was funded by philanthropist Thomas Storey in the 19th century to promote art, science, and literature.

Today it is an important center for arts, innovation, and creative business.

There's a weekly changing exhibition space and an excellent cafe, too.

Another benchmark. On St Mary's Gate this time. I can't find any record to state they were cut on anything other than vertical structures.

Some pain-free walking would be appreciated now. It's nice to be able to walk about and see what's what.

Looking somewhat damp.

Making the base.

Allowing everything to sweat under a lid develops flavor and gives me time for an espresso and a smoke outside.

Those activities are also a perfect timer 😅

'Door furniture' is a less shocking appellation than 'knobs and knockers'.

Somewhat neglected but developing a wonderful patina.

Just a cute little bunch of wild blossoms. Tiny little blooms smaller than my pinkie nail 😊
