Shock, horror! Yes, I am a huge fan of Audrey Hepburn. Imagine my delight when I saw this shop window on my way to dinner tonight! Elegance comes to Lancaster.

Audrey Hepburn was a Belgium*-born actress who played a role in the Dutch Resistance during World War II.

She helped the Resistance by performing in secret ballet recitals to raise money for the resistance. She delivered coded messages, documents, and the underground newspaper by bicycle. She also worked as a doctor's assistant during the battle of Arnhem and cared for children who had been traumatized by the war.

*Corrected after some very helpful fact-checking by a kind Flickr-friend. Thanks, mate.

Passengers (irritatingly referred to as 'customers') queue to be allowed onto the platform. It reminds me of an old-fashioned aerodrome.

And thank you all for visiting my visual diary during 2025. I hope 2026 will bring us all peace, love, and joy.

This afternoon's collection. There's no doubt this place is damp! Stone walls absorb nothing at all!

The river Kent runs (confusingly for me) through Levens Deer Park, which is in south Cumbria. Here the river is wide and calm, but further upstream is some amazing white water, and a killer stopper. Some brave souls even kayak through that section. I prefer the calm and peace that is here.

Detail from Decimus Burton's terrace at Fleetwood.

The amazing original floor tiles in the hospice cafe at Ulverston.

Back from rehearsal, famished.

Raid the fridge ...

Bacon, lettuce, avocado, and tomato on wholemeal toast.

Ready in minutes.

Can't believe how lush those tomatoes are!

Mahlzeit 👍

Apricots and yogurt. Saint Clements in the glass.

and Carry On

BSL uses both hands to sign. ASL (American Sign Language) is signed with only one hand. Very convenient. But it is completely different from BSL.

Esperanto has a sign language, and of course there is ISL (International Sign Language) which is a pidgin version of all the others. It's often used at the UN and other international contexts.

There's a shortage of ISL interpreters, but I think the time for learning it has passed me by now. But you, dear reader ...?!

Quick and easy to make.

I added broccoli to give some substance to the creamy mix.

Even better to taste if chilled.

ideal for a hot summer day.

Homemade lemon curd on seeded sourdough toast.

Vintage marmalade on toasted caraway wholemeal bread.

I'm stuck at home with a painful Achilles tendon. it's also raining. the temptation is to eat everything in the flat.

Toasted, the flavor of caraway comes out very well and goes well with the marmalade.

On the way to fisherman's square stands this interesting house. I don't know its history but will find out.

Buried in the footpath near the river was this piece of metal. It's about .50 inches diameter and is a reference point for survey tools. A modern equivalent of the phaeon symbol used as a benchmark.

Happy Yule!

Welcome the light.

After 30 minutes the machine beeps to say it's finished. Lid off and fluffy, separate grains of rice are revealed. Electricity cost 7p and so it was cheaper than using the hob. And the rice isn't burned!

Decommissioned cars from Glasgow Subway on Argyle Street.

The intention is to transform them into a restaurant and workshops.

English farmhouse cheddar made from goat milk.

I bought this on special last week. It is absolutely astonishing!

Firm yet creamy. A subtle tang. Some sweetness.

That's lunch sorted.

Enjoy with some fruit and a plain digestive biscuit.

The scourge of pavement chewing gum.

In 1992, the sale of chewing gum in Singapore was banned during the government of PM Goh Chok Tong. This was in response to vandals placing gum over the door sensors on the MRT trains, which was inconvenient and very expensive to fix.

Contrary to popular belief, when the same idea was presented to PM Lee Kwan Yew, he felt a total ban was too drastic.

(Today one can buy 'dental health gum' but be careful where you dump it - or you could pick up a $2000 fine!

Verbena wrapped around some agapanthus seed pods.

A bit of New Zealand bush. There is nothing quite like it. It did more for me in a few minutes than many hours of therapy.

And now you know what to call football shorts in Czechia.

It's been hot today, so I had to buy a pair of shorts while I was out, or risk overheating in my usual denim.

FK Dukla Praha is a football team from Prague, and they have a long history. Their shorts are excellent for walking about on a hot day.

From my recently found fence.

I love the flaking layers of paint, like a rusty old trawler that's been hauled ashore.

Coffee Cuban style. It's seriously lush. Look it up and make one. It's easy and very rewarding.
