Etruscan votive bronze statuette in the Burrell Collection, Glasgow.* Possibly from Monte Falterona. Later 5th cent. BC?

Like the Mars of Todi, the figure may have held a spear in his left hand and a libation dish in his (missing) right hand. In The Art of the Etruscan Armourer, I suggest that the warrior may be wearing lamellar armour: www.academia.edu/80275410/The_Art_of_the_Etruscan_Armourer

* Photographed in 2010, it has since been removed to the museum's store. collections.glasgowmuseums.com/mwebcgi/mweb?request=recor...

Another design by Josh of Ancient Art, I already had a Sacred Heart of a different design and two Crown of Thorns (one on arm and one on back). I always liked the All-Seeing Eye of God so I was glad when Josh showed me the design. I did not want a triangle because that looks Masonic. But the heart stands t for the Trinity. The flames will be worked in to the ones to the right at a later date. I now have a ll the pieces in place and I will let them all heal up in February and in march start the job of working a back ground that will tie it all together.

Detail of the centurion on the Portonaccio Battle Sarcophagus, AD 180-190. Palazzo Massimo, Rome. Photographed in 1998 with a Ricoh R1.

The Roman soldier can be identified as a centurion becuase he wears his sword scabbard on the left. Ordinary legionaries and cavalrymen (e.g. the Portonaccio eques) wore their swords on the right. Note also the centurion's armour - lorica segmentata.

"It makes good sense to revere the sun and the stars ... because we are their children" - Carl Sagan

A video celebrating the power of the sun, featuring Jason Silva of Shots of Awe:

An Etruscan candelabrum stand, this artifact dates from 525-500 BC.

The Maenads are well-known from Greek and Roman (and Etruscan) archaeology and mythology, and the Etruscan renderings have exaggerated features, as this one does - check out the fingers and the feet. Meanads were female devotees of Dionysos that were consumed with pagan religious fervor and ecstacies, and even in pagan times were feared. In other works, they were drunk, as Dionysos (Romans called him Bacchus) was the god of wine.

It is just this kind of thing that led Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, to write to the Ephesians, saying "Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit." In Christ we are called to far better.

But can we understand that injunctions against drunkenness no more imply a prohibition against drinking alcoholic beverages any more than injunctions against adultery imply a prohibition against sex?

Words to be spoken by Qebehsenuef: "I bring for you your mummy in front of you, so that it sees Re every day."

This tattoo has three parts, they represent three big influences in my life:

1. The Cross

For the past 33 years I have attended non-denominational churches. They never put much emphasis on the cross, as one Deacon put it, "Jesus is off the Cross, it was not the important part of the story". But I have always like the image of the cross to remind of the work Jesus did on our behalf. One of my favorite hymns is, "The Old Rugged Cross".

2. The Inscription

The acronym INRI represents the Latin inscription IESVS NAZARENVS REX IVDÆORVM (Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum), in English reads as "Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews". John 19:20 states that this was written in three languages: Hebrew, Latin and Greek and was put on the cross of Jesus. I am use to this acronym because I grew up in the Catholic Church, so it reminds me of Christ. It is usually on the upper section of the cross but it is a good transition from the "Rugged Cross" to the next section.

3. The Anchor

The anchor is a tie back to my Navy time. What most folks don't know is the Anchor symbol was used by early Christians as a hidden cross symbol to guard from persecution from the Romans and Greeks, In the Navy, the traditional Anchor tattoo was a symbol of Stability and being Well Grounded.

Josh, at Ancient Art in Hampton, drew this up for me after a conversation a few days ago. It has it all, I liked his design and went for it.

The Column of Marcus Aurelius is a Roman victory column in Piazza Colonna, Rome, Italy. It is a Doric column featuring a spiral relief: it was built in honour of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius and modeled on Trajan's Column.

From the Musei Vaticani, Rome

I have always been a fan of the art work for the Latino's Celebration, the Day of the Dead. I saw this tattoo a while back and liked it, most of the musician ones are playing a guitar. The "Squeeze Box" is a nice change, more amusing.

The Lamassu guarded Nergal Gate at the entrance to the ancient Assyrian city of Nineveh, near modern-day Mosul, Iraq, in c 700 B.C. until 2015 when it was destroyed by ISIS. It was recreated by MIchael Rakowitz as part of a project to recreate over 7,000 archaeological artefacts looted from the Iraq Museum during the war or destroyed elsewhere. It was unveiled by Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, on 28 March 2018.

Rebuilding the Lamassu means it can symbolically continue as guardian of a city's past, present and future. The inscription written on the Lamassu reads:

"Sennacherib, king of the world, king of Assyria, had the inner and outer wall of Nineveh built anew and raised as high as mountains."

Reverse

Features a modern design by sculptor Emanuel Hahn, showing an Indian and a voyageur, a travelling agent for a fur company, paddling a canoe by an islet on which there are two wind-swept trees. In the canoe are bundles of goods; the bundle at the right has HB, representing the Hudson's Bay Company. The vertical lines in the background represent the northern lights.

JUDAEA, Herodians. Agrippa I, with Gaius (Caligula). 37-43 CE. Æ 23mm (11.53 g, 12h). Caesarea Paneas mint. Dated RY 5 (40/1 CE). laureate head of Gaius (Caligula) left, [G]A[I]W KAISARI SEBASTW [GERMANIKW], NOM[ISMA]/BASILE[WS]/AGRIPPA, Germanicus in triumphal quadriga right, holding eagle-tipped scepter; [car decorated with Nike standing right]; LE in exergue. The grandson of Herod I, Agrippa I, so-named in honor of the victor of Actium, spent much of his youth in the Roman imperial court. Popular with the imperial family, including the emperor Tiberius, Agrippa passed much of his time in the home of Antonia Minor, the mother of Germanicus and the future emperor Claudius. There, the boys became great friends, and as an older man, Agrippa became attached to the future emperor Gaius, being appointed governor of the territories of Batanaea and Trachonitis upon Gaius’ accession. Unfortunately contemporary politics placed a significant strain on the relationship between the king and Rome. In AD 39 Agrippa’s uncle, Antipas, was accused of plotting with the Parthians and was exiled. Agrippa’s loyalty gained him his uncle’s forfeited territories. In AD 40 renewed riots between Greeks and Jews broke out in Alexandria, and Gaius, clearly unhappy with his Jewish subjects, provocatively ordered the installation of a statue of himself within the Holy of Holies in Jerusalem. Agrippa, who had been unsuccessfully involved in trying to quell similar riots in Alexandria before, sought to emphasize his loyalty to local Roman officials by striking coinage which commemorated his long-standing friendship with Gaius and, especially, Germanicus. Based on the dupondii struck in honor of the emperor’s father Germanicus, this coin includes the great general riding in his triumphal car in honor of his recovery of the standards lost by Varus, rather than portraying Agrippa himself, an identification emphasized by the specific inclusion of the word NOMISMA in the legend. By avoiding self promotion, Agrippa hoped to successfully navigate the treacherous waters which might result in his own removal from power. Nero. AD 54-68. Æ Sestertius (33mm, 27.56 g, 6h). Lugdunum (Lyon) mint. Struck circa AD 66. Laureate head left, globe at point of bust / Port of Ostia with eight ships within the harbor, at the top is a pharus surmounted by a statue of Neptune, below is a reclining figure of Tiber, holding a rudder and dolphin. RIC I 513; WCN 458.

While Julius Caesar recognized the value of expanding Rome's port facilitites at Ostia, it was Claudius who began actual building in 42 AD. As part of the construction, one of Caligula's pleasure galleys was scuttled and filled with cement; above it was constructed a lighthouse surmounted by a statue of Neptune. Although the actual date of completion is not certain, it must have occurred shortly before this sestertius was minted. A further expansion of the facilities was required under Trajan and Hadrian. By the fourth century, however, the port's importance began to diminish as a result of silting. Soon the region became a breeding ground for malaria and was abandoned.

Detail of a Roman cavalryman (eques) on the Portonaccio Battle Sarcophagus (AD 180-190). Note his scale armour (lorica squamata), baldric (balteus), decorated scabbard (vagina), and old-fashioned military boots (caligae).

These dog mummies were related to the cult of Wepwawet, the chief deity of the city of Asyut. The god used to be depicted as a dog or a jackal like the more famous jackal god Anubis. Like Anubis, Wepwawet was associated with the funerary sphere. These mummies of dogs discovered in the animal cemeteries in Asyut, were presented to the deity as votive offerings, whose purpose included asking the god for a blessing or thanking for one. To meet the demand of votive offerings, dogs were probably bred near the temple and expressly killed to be purchased by worshippers.

During the 1920’s 1930’s there were few names in the numismatic world as well known as Henry and Julius Guttag, prominent New York City numismatists and securities dealers. The brothers were the owners of Guttag Brothers, with offices on Wall Street and Stone Street in lower Manhattan. Their first numismatic ads in 1920 offered to buy 100 Isabella quarters for $45 and announced that, “We are quantity dealers.”

Julius Guttag had become a coin collector at 15 and remained deeply involved in the field right down to his death in 1962. He was Life Member 24 of the American Numismatic Association (ANA). In 1924 he became the chief proponent of Coin Week that soon expanded into a nationwide annual event directed by the ANA that later became known as National Coin Week.

National Coin Week began in 1923 when American Numismatic Association Governor Julius Guttag suggested that a week-long event should be established “to attract the general public to our hobby and consequently increase our membership, and aid in our science.” That December, the first announcement of a “Coin Week” was made in The Numismatist and scheduled for the week of February 9-16, 1924. In 1942 the observance was moved to the third full week of April, where it has remained ever since

Detail of the centurion on the Portonaccio Battle Sarcophagus, AD 180-190. He can be identified as such by wearing his sword scabbard on the left. Ordinary legionaries and cavalrymen (e.g. the Portonaccio eques: flic.kr/p/2oiEzjk) wore their swords on the right. Note also the centurion's armour - lorica segmentata.
