I had seen photos of tattoos in a mouth but this was the first time I got a chance to see it done. The young man is being tattooed by Coyote at Ancient Art Tattoo Studio in Hampton, VA.

Handmade ceramic mural in NYC, Manhattan, for Aurelie Bierdeman.

This woman actually fell asleep while getting a large tattoo of black rose that started on her belly and wrapped around to cover half her back. My friend and tattoo artist, Josh, is doing the piece.

The Ajanta Caves (Ajiṇṭhā leni; Marathi: अजिंठा लेणी), Maharashtra, India are 29 rock-cut cave monuments which date from the 2nd century BCE. The caves include paintings and sculptures considered to be masterpieces of both Buddhist religious art (which depict the Jataka tales) as well as frescos which are reminiscent of the Sigiriya paintings in Sri Lanka.The caves were built in two phases starting around 200 BCE, with the second group of caves built around 600 CE.

 

Since 1983, the Ajanta Caves have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The caves are located in the Indian state of Maharashtra.

Villa Boscoreale is an ancient Roman villa located in the town of Boscoreale, about one and a half kilometers north of Pompeii, southeast of Vesuvius, in Campania, southern Italy

An entire wall of the tomb-chapel showed a feast in honour of Nebamun. Naked serving-girls and servants wait on his friends and relatives. Married guest sit in pairs on fine chairs, while the young women turn and talk to each other. This erotic scene of relaxation and wealth is something for Nebamun to enjoy for all eternity. The richly dressed guests are entertained by dancers and musicians, who sit on the ground playing and clapping. The words of their song in honour of Nebamun are written above them. "The earth-god has caused his beauty to grow in every body... the channels are filled with water anew, and the lands is flooded with love of him."

Valdivia 8 (Piquigua Phase) from the Atahualpa Site (N3A1-001) Ecuador. Ultra Rare stone. Monolith stone block in bas-relief embellished with deep excised carvings on all six sides. Typically said by many to stylized zoomorphic features and resemble an owl. We disagree, as they appear to be humanoid showing either appendages or articles of clothing. Measures 10" in hight.

These unusual vases shaped like human heads seem to show what the classical Greeks thought of as "barbarians." I believe they are probably perfume jars.

Unrestored wall mural at Pompeii demonstrates the vivid colors in use in ancient Roman homes. The bottom right corner of the mural contains a depiction of a man hunting deer.

This transitional style Valdivia - Chorrera feline mortar is in choice condition. Outstanding open lapidary workmanship in serpentine stone. Incised traits on the sides and mouth area. Measures over 10" in length.

we went to see the rembrandt exhibition at the fine arts museum yesterday, and took sara along as well. she slept half the exhibition, and smiled to all the ladies after walking up.

you're not allowed to take photos of the temporary exhibitions, so afterwards we had a look at the egyptian collection, where I could take a few pics.

the rembrandt show was great, they also had a number of other dutch painters, and it was great seeing in real life the paintings I only looked at in books until now, but it was really crowded. and apparently it's always busy. they were even crowded on the 1st of january.

Superbly crafted Jamacoaque mask depicting a shaman in transformation, possibly into a dragon. Nicely detailed with crisply incised teeth, horns on the forehead and good paint throughout. Fine condition. Pepper tree bark (yellow) and ochre (green,red) used for coloring. Manabi region, Ecuador. 300 BC - 400 AD. Measures 3 1/2"

From left to right: two giants, Dionysos wearing a lionskin, the goddess Themis (justice) in a chariot drawn by lions, two more giants, Apollo and his sister Artemis pursuing another giant. Rama with Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman

 

Tiruvalangadu, Mayavaram Taluk, Thanjavur District.

Rama Height 3'.5"; Sita Height 3'; Lakshmana Height 3'1"; Hanuman Height 2'4". About 12th Century AD.

 

Rama stands on a Padmasana in tribhanga posture wearing Kirita makuta, siraschakra and all other ornaments. The hands are held in the posture of holding a bow in the left hand and an arrow in the right hand. Lakshmana in all respects is similar to Rama but he wears jatamakuta. Sita is seen standing on a padmasana in the tribhanga posture. Her right hand is in lola posture and her left hand is in kataka pose. She also wears jatamakuta, haras, valayas, channavira, waistband etc. Siraschakra is present. Hanuman stands on a padmasana wearing jatamakuta. He has udarabandha. His hands are held in the usual supplicating manner.

This gentleman gave me permission to take these photos. He lost his daughter in a car accident last Monday. He was getting a tribute tattoo portrait, using one of his favorite childhood photos of her. Coyote, of Ancient Art Tattoo Studio in Hampton, Virginia, was doing excellent work, as always.
