I had been wondering how to tackle this subject and as I was ironing one of my Tee Shirts it became obvious.
The Tee Shirt lists the "By Weight" analysis of the elements that make up a typical Human Being. So by weight we are mostly Hydrocarbon and a lot of trace elements.

Who was the most influential Twitterer at #msm09?
Size = proportional to the number of times they were referred to in a tweet in the context of #msm09. I made a record of the relationship between the Twitterer and who they @mentioned in their tweet.
Colour = their overall "influence" within the network (betweenness centrality). Betweenness is often used as a measure of influence in graph theory/social network analysis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centrality). In simple terms, those with the highest betweenness centrality act as "hubs" within the network, i.e. they can control the flow of information within the network and act as a "broker" - a very powerful position.
Of course, this is just maths, and many other factors make up the influence landscape. Nevertheless, it's still interesting to apply social network analysis to the interaction of people at a conference discussing these very topics :)

Our last lesson was all about getting rid of the color, and looking at the light in a photo by looking at the black and white image.
I framed this photo looking at the shape of the tree. I liked my choices, but I wasn't sure why. It doesn't really line up with the rule of thirds. If you crop it down a little bit, it lines up nicely with the golden ratio lines.
But then if you look at the golden spiral, uncropped, you've got a nice arc at the top with the one branch, and then another in the bottom right that continues the same spiral. Also, that dark shadowy area fills that bottom corner box pretty nicely.
So lets get rid of the lines and look at the light. With the sunlight coming from the right, you can see the nice gradiations on the tree branches, and you can see the black of the shadows contrasted against the bright sky.
So let's bring in the color - I chose to go with some Kodachrome-ish photos from a Kodachrome 25 preset that I downloaded somewhere. The finished color shot looks good, but it's the underlying light that you can see in the black and white photo that makes it work.

This is scanned right out of my sketchbook so sorry I didn't rotate the drawing on the left. I liked how it looked as a composition.
The ouput from a project I did one year ago. Actually, it was done with scriptographer, but I just ported it to processing / java (for command line generation).
