“The AMC complex, at 14250 Plymouth Road, dates to 1927 and once sprawled 1.4 million square feet. It has been empty since 2010, when it was sold by Chrysler after the automaker's bankruptcy. Anything of value inside the building was subsequently removed as scrap, and a large back section was razed.

What's left includes the main yellowish-brick building and its tall university-like tower, as well as a long, attached three-story structure. The complex is open to the elements, awash in graffiti and missing many windows and some walls.

There has been considerable illegal dumping at the site. Chrysler kept about 900 employees in the building as late as 2009 before shifting work to its Auburn Hills headquarters.

The entire property was offered in the treasurer's tax foreclosure auction last fall (2015) for the price of $500 — plus $232,000 in unpaid taxes. The sole bidder was a Commerce Township man who backed out of the deal for undisclosed reasons.

The Treasurer's Office then offered the property to the city of Detroit, which didn't want it.

Tyler said the property's ownership will likely go to the Wayne County Land Bank before year's end (2016). County officials have brainstormed possible redevelopment and reuse options, which all would entail taking down "the majority of the existing structure," he said.

I'm no expert on AMC vehicles, but think this one must be circa 1970. At the Henry, Illinois Cruise Night, 2018.

The American Motor Corporation made a few unique cars in the '70s but the company ultimately did not survive.... probably due to gas prices, new regulations and bad luck with suppliers. One of their most iconic cars was the compact but wide bodied AMC Pacer (1975). It sold well initially, but the design and production was rushed giving rise to... quality problems.

This is not a picture taken in the 1970s and scanned onto a PC. I took this picture in 2023, next to a garage that occasionally services modern-era old cars, and this AMC Pacer station wagon is one of them.

This is a 1979 AMC Pacer wagon, complete with fake wood grain, with American Motors' 304 V-8, which was first developed when Nash and Hudson were its brands. The engine is a testament to AMC's limited resources and Detroit's overreliance on aging technology. Ironically, the Pacer was designed for a rotary engine, but the project to develop it had fallen through.

The original Pacer hatchback - which look like either a goldfish bowl on wheels or an inflated Porsche 928 - deut for 1975, andthe wagon debuted ifor 1977. Although the wagon was certainly spacious, the deficiencies it shared with the hatchback - an engine bay intruding into the front-passenger space, heavy doors. No one missed the Pacer - a name previously used on an Edsel model - when it departed after the 1980 model year ended. In fact, production of the 1980 Pacer stopped in the fall of 1979 - before the 1980 calendar year began! And apart from the Volkswagen Fox and a Volvo sport wagon or two, no one ever again saw a station wagon without rear passenger doors on the market in the United States (thank goodness) after the 1980 model year.

Which makes the Pacer wagon an anti-classic. :-D

AMC Rebel

This AMC Rebel (known because Rambler Rebel within 1967) can be a mid-size vehicle produced by American Magnetic motors Business (AMC) through 1967 to 1970. The item substituted your Rambler Basic. This Rebel seemed to be substituted because of the identical AMC Matador with the 1971...

The 1967 Marlin was increased in size to "full-size" and based on the senior Ambassador series on a 118" wheelbase chassis, as American Motors introduced an all new, redesigned intermediate and full size platform with the 1967 AMC Rebel and Ambassador. AMC now marketed the Ambassador as a full size flagship, in line with CEO and President Roy Abernethy's vision of being a full line automaker. Less than six months into the model year, Abernethy resigned in January 1967 as record losses mounted and the all new models failed to reach sales targets.

Sharing the same platform as the Ambassador, the Marlin was basically a fastback variant of the Ambassador 2-door hardtop. The narrow rear trunk opening limited practical cargo loading and the lack of a folding rear seat on the fastback (unlike the Mustang and Barracuda) was not versatile for oversized loads. The Marlin was in its final year with just 2,545 built. The 232 six was standard, with 290 and high performance 343 V8s optional.

This Marlin (delivered October 1966) has the standard 232.

More info on the Marlin can be found at the Marlin Auto Club.
