One of the largest cathedrals in Britain is located in the city of Winchester in the south of England. Winchester Cathedral was built between 1079 and 1093, at that time the place was still a very important city within the country and also the first capital of England. It was only replaced by London in the 12th century.

The imposing structure of Winchester Cathedral shows the former importance of the city, it has the largest nave in all of Europe and both the facade and the interior are very elaborate and designed with great attention to detail.

Rare for Nebraska in November that is....

There was some risk of severe weather that afternoon. In fact.... way out of season severe weather. There was just enough instability by afternoon to allow the thunderstorms to develop, strengthen, and even spin up a few tornadoes in the 4-5 p.m. CST time frame.

I had a 5 hour drive back from Missouri and was exhausted. Plus I had to work in a few hours so chasing this storm was just not possible that afternoon. But I did venture out to capture a few snaps of that afternoons events.

Pictured here were the cells effecting the Red Cloud to Clay Center Nebraska areas. I was just to the south of the I-80 Minden Interchange. Found a cozy spot without any powerlines and pointed my camera to the east southeast.

Some amazing captures to finalize my severe weather photography for 2016

Dans les Gorges de la Carança, entre Perpignan et Font Romeu ...

How about this place?

This was shot at a really slick bar called Club Mix at the top of THE Hotel in Las Vegas. A lot of people ask how I end up getting shots when no one is around... Sometimes it is a camera trick, and sometimes I am lucky enough to get into places when no one is around. In this case, the people from MGM/Mirage, who own many of the most beautiful hotels-casinos in Vegas knew I was coming to Vegas and they gave me carte blanche to move around freely. I wore those poor people out because I didn't get tired... I was like Homer in that episode where he went to hell and was forced to eat donuts nonstop. He kept saying "more" until the devil got frustrated.

Anyway, a big thanks to David and his crew there at MGM/Mirage. I have a ton more shots coming in the future... so, as with other threads, stay tuned!

Last, I have updated my "Things That I have Found That Inspire Me" page. That page may take a while to load... my apologies... but once it is done, I hope you see a few cool things as well.

More About Grey Herons

I posted a grey heron photo yesterday and provided some information about this interesting bird. Here is some additional insight about this wonderful creature.

This species breeds in colonies in trees close to lakes, the sea-shore or other wetlands, although it will also nest in reed beds. It builds a bulky stick nest.

It feeds in shallow water, catching fish or frogs with its long bill. Herons will also take small mammals and birds. It will often wait motionless for prey, or slowly stalk its victim.

The grey heron has become a very common species in recent decades by moving into urban environments in great numbers. There, the herons hunt as they usually would but also make use of food discarded by humans, will visit feeding times in zoos to birds such as penguins and pelicans and some individuals even make use of people feeding them at their homes.

J'aime particulièrement cette image car c'était il ya plusieurs années, ma première prise de vue de ce type. Photo argentique scannée.

I particularly like this picture because it was several years ago, my first shooting of this type. Silver shot, scanned and slightly cropped.

While at Tunkwa Lake for the week, we were lucky to have a few clear nights so I could get some amazing captures of the Milky Way.

The Grand Canyon was the impetus behind the trip, so I figured I should post a shot from there. This is a shot from Point Imperial, looking in the North Easterly direction. The somewhat odd look to the clouds as well as the rainbow is all mother nature, not me messing around in ps.

I had never been to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon before. I had visited the South briefly back in the mid-90s. The North and South Rims are two really different experiences, not the least of which is the much reduced crowds in the North. If you ever visit, do yourself a favor and check out the North. Not to imply the South should be skipped, because you really can't appreciate the size and grandness of the GC without seeing it from the South.

More pics to follow from Point Imperial. In addition to this late afternoon shot, I found this location to be great for sunrise.

"At 8,803 feet, Point Imperial is the highest of the North Rim overlooks, and the northernmost, presenting a rather different panorama than that from the other two popular viewing locations further south (Cape Royal and Bright Angel Point). Imperial sits high above the region where the Grand Canyon first takes on its characteristic wide, branched appearance, since just to the north, the cliffs either side of the Colorado are relatively close (a mile or less), and from here 50 river miles north to the official start of the canyon at Lees Ferry, the gorge is mostly unbranched and more conventional in dimensions." web

Carbonia: men at work

The Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) ranges from Costa Rica north thru Mexico and the central and eastern half of the U.S. to southeastern Canada. Found in woodlands or thick brush, usually near water. It is the only North American marsupial; a marsupial being a mammal that has a pouch where it carries its young. The young opossoms are not fully developed when they enter the pouch, and must spend the first two months of their life in their mother's pouch.
