Found this stalwart chap hangin' out on a bright winter morn at Ft. Snelling State Park, central Minnesota.

Should you be convinced you'll never be able to learn bird calls, start with the Gray Catbird. Once you've heard its catty mew you won't forget it. Follow the sound into thickets and vine tangles and you'll be rewarded by a somber gray bird with a black cap and bright rusty feathers under the tail. Gray Catbirds are relatives of mockingbirds and thrashers, and they share that group's vocal abilities, copying the sounds of other species and stringing them together to make their own song. I wouldn't advice you to try such a shot unless you've got a trustworthy DSLR camera and be absolutely certain of what you're doing !!!

It was early in the afternoon, the sun was still very high in the sky and it was rather scorching ... circumstances under which it is rather impossible to capture a visually pleasant shot ... But then I had this beautiful seascape scene in front of me and I just had to take the shot, even though the sun was standing still just behind my main theme ... So I set my D90's exposure compensation to -0,67 EV and adjusted my shutter speed to 1/1600 s ...

To tell you the truth the photo came out a lot better than I expected ... So much better that I tried some more of those risky but amazing captures, of shooting directly against the burning "fireball", to a couple of additional beautiful landscapes I happen to come across henceforth ... So just bear with me for a little while my friends ....

By the way the above seen landscape can be found at a rather difficult to approach point of Rodopi's seashore ... At an area called Maronia ...

EXIF: NIKON D90 with Nikon Nikkor 18-55 lens, Manual mode, f 6,3, Focal Length 22 mm, ISO 200, use of ND HOYA X2 filter, exposure compensation forced to -0,67 EV, HDR photo made by only one RAW shot, manual exposure setting, auto focus mode, shutter speed 1/1600 s, no tripod, flash did not fire ...

After several days trying I think I have finally worked out the settings on my a550. Lots of my shots were coming out bluured and I was beginning to think there was a problem, I think i just had the focus area set wrong. Anyway the change seemed to work.

No matter what ? I'll get my share

Unveiling the hidden gems of nature, today I present to you the exquisite beauty of the Sexton Beetle (Nicrophorus vespillo), aka the Burying Beetle, captured using the focus stacking method. An intricate world in minute detail, isn't it? 🔬

Did you know? This beetle, known for its shiny, armor-like carapace, has an intriguing life habit that inspired its common name. It locates carcasses of small animals and 'buries' them by digging the soil beneath them. This action is not for a creepy reason but is an essential part of their lifecycle. The carcass serves as a vital food source for their larvae, symbolizing the miraculous circle of life, even in the most unexpected scenarios.

The world of insects is fascinating, isn't it?💫 Stay tuned for more amazing captures of the lesser-known, yet extraordinary, actors of our natural world.

I managed to capture this Gigantic Jet event on Sept 17 2025 using my Sony A7s camera. The gap seen near the top is due to what is called a rolling shutter issue and these cameras are known for that type of an issue. Still, an amazing capture nonetheless. I was really lucky to have captured this event because I had just finished setting up my eqiupment and recording when I saw it fill the screen on my recorder. A few seconds more and I would have missed the event. Here is the 4K Video of this event: youtu.be/wlvvp9E1meU?si=4duOy5gDzzRfBpym

My daughter's bedroom gets the morning sunshine which is why it is Zeus's MOST favourite spot.

I went ahhhhhh when I saw him and then was very tempted to crawl onto the bed and snuggle up with him. He looked so cosy!

What do I got to do to make you love me

What do I got to do to make you care

What do I got to do when lighting strikes me

It will wait to find that your not there

What do I got to do to make you want me

What do I got to do to be heard

And what do I say when its all over babe

And sorry seems to be the hardest word♪♫♪♫♪

Endangered Species Centre

After completing her studies in education, Lente married Johann Roode. In 1985, the couple bought their first farm on the border of her father’s land. After Willie Schürmann’s passing, Lente inherited the family farm. Further acquisitions of adjoining farms resulted in a sizeable property and their first venture was to ranch a herd of Bonsmara cattle. A continued battle with predators led to the inevitable decision to transform the land into a game farm. Kapama Game Reserve (covering 12 500 ha of land) was born.

As a result of Lente’s passion for the cheetah, a cheetah-breeding project was established on the reserve. At the time the cheetah was listed as an endangered species. The facility was tasked with the conservation and breeding of the species for possible release into the wild, as well as providing research opportunities to scientists in zoological and veterinary fields.

The project gained momentum when Lente contacted Des Varaday (a well-known cheetah breeder whose facility was located near Middelburg in Mpumalanga Province) in the hope of acquiring a few of his cats. Lente had known Des from childhood when he used her cheetah Sebeka as the subject of his book. Des surprisingly requested that Lente take custody of all thirty-five of his cheetahs! His motivation was that he was getting too old to look after them and that he needed a suitable owner, like Lente, to take responsibility for them. She agreed, and with the aid of the then Department of Nature Conservation, the animals were transported from Varaday to Kapama.

With the assistance and guidance of the late Professor David Meltzer of the Onderstepoort Faculty of Veterinary Science (at the University of Pretoria) and Des Varaday himself, they planned and developed the infrastructure of the centre and built the Hoedspruit Cheetah Project (HCP) within the space of a year.

It took a further year for the animals to settle in before it was decided that its doors would be opened to the public in 1990. The responsible tourism activities on offer helped to generate some of the funds needed to run the growing project, while simultaneously providing an opportunity to educate the public about wildlife conservation.

♫ Mad Hatter ♫

⚜️Tabitha Kinkade could never forget the first time she saw a werewolf. She was just a little girl, wrapped in her mother's arms. She could still see it's yellow eyes rolling as it crushed bone and ripped flesh, killing Myra, her mother's handmaid, it's sharp teeth glistening over with drool and blood. She could still remember the huffing, bellowing growl and the mighty thud of it's massive feet when it turned toward her and her mother. Samantha Kinkade told her daughter to close her eyes, as she pulled a sword from over the fireplace and faced the beast. However, Tabitha had not closed her eyes, cowering there as her mother held her back behind her. And as much out of youthful curiosity than anything she'd peeked from around her mother's dress. When it saw her, clinching to her mother's skirts the beast stopped. Tilting it's head the creature gazed straight into her eyes as the fires from the sconces along the wall illuminated it's enormous body. It's raspy breathing caused the little flames to flicker creating overinflated shadows that danced around the room and then it began to creep closer, the claws of it's massive feet tapping against the wood floor...

Then somewhere out of the night...

an intense shrilling whimper!

And a friend's cry for help brought her back to the present, "My lady the child!"

⚜️Tabitha bolted into the moonlight just in time to see the werewolf cast the child over the edge of the cliff with Kiva jumping after her. She had no choice but to leave her other pets and Lexington alone to deal with the massive lycanthrope. Without a moment's hesitation she dove over the edge of the cliff side after the little girl. Even with her heightened senses the surrounding void was nearly pitch black as the cool salt air rushed through her red hair. From far away now and quickly growing farther with every passing moment, she could hear Lexington directing the wolves and his whip slashing into the fiend's flesh. The beast howled out, growling so loud she could hear the sounds resonate and echo down along the cliff's glistening walls as she fell down into the abyss.

⚜️The mist cascading across her face made her squint as she held her arms closely by her sides. At last she could see the girl through the murk, her red wolf Kiva holding the hem of her dress in her clinched teeth. Using every muscle and every bit of ability she had Tabitha kept her body, as straight as she could cutting through the darkness like a knife. Finally, within arms length, Tabitha found herself faced with a horrible decision. With the pair spinning uncontrollably and as they were too close to the rocks below, she would have to choose her beloved Kiva or the girl. With no time to think she grabbed the girl pulling her shivering body to her breast. Folding her arms around the child she continued to glide like a human cannonball through the night, watching her precious Kiva fade into the foggy chasm. In her desperation she screamed in terror racing to catch up to the dire wolf. And with her body taut, every muscle flexed and ready, she was able to grab the scruff of Kiva's neck just in time to pull her up to safety. With no more than a few meters between them and death, Tabitha flipped them all around and landed feet first on the slippery rocks. She held both her pet and the little girl in her arms for a moment almost in tears then told Kiva to stay with the toddler and keep her safe before she hurridly leapt up along the rock face.

⚜️She climbed the crag like a spider rushing quickly to the battle. As she neared the top the Shadowhunter could hear one of her wolves cry out and Lexington groan as his body crashed into something. Her fear for her friend's safety almost made her sick as she leapt and scurried up the wall grabbing at jagged edges and seams in the rock face hoisting her body closer up along the damp precipice. Overhead, clouds stirred like a soup as the approaching storm's winds became more intense the closer she got to the top. Finally, she could see grass hanging over the edge and just as she reached to grab the rim of the cliff she heard one of Lexington's flintlocks fire. Her wolves growled in anger, hissing and gnashing their teeth and just then, the monster spoke! It taunted Lexington "I'm gonna tear you apart piggy!" then roared again from deep in its massive chest. Just as the devilish brute began to rush her friend she leapt from the side of the cliff catapulting her body into the sky above the colossal beast. Drawing her swords the Shadowhunter was silent as she looked down across the back of the monster just six meters above him. Lexington never looked in her direction as not to alert the werewolf then fired again hitting it in the chest just as Xandra and Jesper both hurdled toward the lycan. As silent as a cat, her blades found their mark plunging deep on either side of the werewolves's broad neck cutting through his heart and deep into it's lungs. She rolled just past Lexington turning quickly, her own flintlock pulled only to watch the beast fall to his knees.

⚜️As it looked at them all the horror and terror was erased from its face. It was the same expression his mate had made before it died earlier that same evening. Calling to her wolves she ordered them off the monster to allow it to die in peace when in a trice it brought its great paw within inches of her boot and upon regaining enough strength it scowled at her and hissed, "He is coming. And there's nothing you can do about it Shadowhunter. You and your kind will be slaughtered like pigs." It laughed and then fell dead.

Taken aback, Tabitha stood motionless looming over the ghoulish creature. Lexington had heard as well, walking over to stand there with her. He started to say something, and she looked, but he obviously thought better to wait, and she did not ask. They both stood silent watching as the monster turned back to a human man, the curse lifted from him forever.

"Mistress look! The same brand as the female." Lexington had bent down to inspect the man's body.

Tabitha knelt down to see and there it was. The identical and peculiar tattoo they'd found on the girl and in the same spot.

Once she'd inspected the tattoo Tabitha looked at the man's face. She shook her head. He looked so peaceful now. Nearly handsome as he laid there naked, the distant thunder claps above them providing just a little light. Standing, she asked Lexington if he was injured and except for a few scrapes and bruises luckily he wasn't. She quickly took a look at her wolves calling them to her. They were bloody, some of it theirs, but nothing was broken and the lacerations that she could observe didn't look deep.

"Mother and Father must have been looking over us tonight." she thought to herself.

Lexington apologized to her for not asking about the girl and Kiva and she assured him it was alright and that they were as well. That said, she instructed the Prince to continue his inspection while she gathered up Kiva and the kidnapped girl before the coming storm set in.

Walking away Lexington must have noticed she was deep in her thoughts. "My Lady, are you alright?" he called out.

Standing there, cleaning the blood from her swords, she sheathed each of them and looked just over her shoulder asking in return. "Have you ever heard of one that could talk Lex?"

"No My Lady. Never. I... well I don't know what to say Ms. Tabitha."

With a slight nod she walked into the darkness, her gallant wolves at her sides. This night had been filled with violence and distress, and more mystery than she cared for.

It would be nice to be home soon, back at Belraak Castle.

It was midday in Jaflong Sylhet near the Indian border. One of the guys started spaying water on the common ground of the village to settle the dust. It was late winter and days were getting warmer. This kid was eying on the water for a while and jumped directly into it when his mother got inside the house. After few minutes in the water, he totally forgot about his mom. He started screaming with joy and so was his mother for wetting his shirt.

‘Night Jewel’ dropping in for Halloween with a pastel pencil drawing along with Bat Facts with Jax.

1) Bats do not like the smell of mothballs, white phenol, cinnamon, or eucalyptus.

2) The only flying mammal and believed it came from the same group that gave rise to shrews and moles. Also believed that bats and dogs share a common ancestor however that ancestor has never been identified.

3) Their intelligence level is comparable to dolphins, if not higher.

4) They are only aggressive when they’re frightened or provoked.

5) The females give birth while hanging upside down and catch the newborn before it hits the ground.

6) They can fly up to speeds of 60 miles an hour.

7) They have short legs and cannot form a running start to fly. So no worries there that they will run after you like a chicken with it’s head cut off.

8 ) Bat droppings were commonly harvested during the 18th century from caves and were used to manufacture gun powder.

9) The world’s smallest bat is called the bumblebee bat. Both fitting for size and the fact that about 500 to 700 plants have been identified as being pollinated by nectar-feeding bats. These include mangoes, bananas, peaches and cacao. So when you eat chocolate you should be saying thank you to the bat!

10) And last, a Halloween fact. Bats were present at the earliest Halloween celebrations, not just symbolically but literally. As part of Samhain, Celts lit huge bonfires which attracted insects. This attracted bats and soon spotting bats became connected to the festival.

Happy Halloween all! I drew a fruit bat as it is the only bat I think is cute. Despite the amazing facts….if I would see one I would still run like a bat out of hell. Also just discovered who the original photographer is of this amazing capture of the image. Ken Drake. Have reached out for drawing permission and if not will respectfully remove.

Have a great day and thanks for the visit.

I have been seeing some amazing captures of the Lessert's Rainbow spider by my friends over the last 2 years.

It was my long time wish to photograph it. However I missed many opportunities to shoot it due to various reasons.

I got my opportunity during the macro outing after the spider workshop.

Behind every successful photo there are 100s which failed. Which people never get to see.

Am I happy with the result? No, Not even close.

But I am happy with this opportunity. It is fun to shoot such a tiny creature navigating a maze of entangled roots and grass stalk. A creature which vanishes and reappears out of nowhere. A creature which will make your jaw drop when you are seeing it eye to eye through your viewfinder.

It was a brief shoot and I lost him amidst the grass soon. Time was short so could not pursue further.

Hope to capture my dream shot next time.
