Although this is only a quick shot taken in the back yard ... it needed to be done. Nice alignment of The moon (highest), Jupiter (in the middle of the two) bright ones in line, and Venus ("closest" to the shed"). Also making guest appearances were the Pleiades (slightly up and to the right of the moon) and Orion (far left of the image).

Dusk settles over Marina State Beach. The horizon was pretty at this time. I also later saw a nice alignment of the moon, Mars and Venus!
It was that special time again when I made a road trip to the beach. This time, I went south to Marina State Beach in Marina, CA. I've always been going up north to S.F. and I miss going south towards Monterey. Since gas was cheap and there was no coastal fog or clouds hugging the coastline, I was encouraged to make this trip... a trip to see a clear sunset by the sea! It's been a while since I've seen the sun itself actually clearly touch the ocean horizon.
The weather was pleasant and there was hardly any wind. There were big waves, however! Apparently, I have came during the 'king tide'. The king tides occur when the earth, moon and sun are aligned at perigee and perihelion, resulting in the largest tidal range seen over the course of a year.
After taking in the views and snapping pics, I then enjoyed the climax of the trip...a sunset by the sea! After the sunset, I was about to leave (I even turned on my car). However, I saw the moon and Venus up above over the dusk skies, so why not stay for some astronomy shots, too! So I went back out and I managed to capture an alignment of the moon, Mars and Venus (which I also forgot about)! The heavenly alignment above the Monterey Peninsula below was a dazzling sight... It was a great day...

Here was something unexpected. This sign indicated the trail had been re-aligned near one of the overlooks. That's not unexpected in itself; trails get moved around all the time. What was unexpected was that this trail was re-aligned with the support of volunteers from Iowa State University!
In case you're not up of academic geography, Iowa State University is located in Ames, Iowa. That's 811 miles away from Cloudland Canyon State Park by car, five states away. There is no branch of Iowa State in, say, Atlanta. And while I know we're talking about Georgia, there are colleges here, and those colleges probably teach courses on trail re-alignment. So I don't know why anybody dragged a bunch of Iowans down here.
