4/16/22 - Crystal Lake, Illinois
No injuries were reported after an extra-alarm fire ripped through a large banquet and conference center in Crystal Lake early Saturday morning, leaving it a total loss.
The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department responded around 1:24 a.m. Saturday to an activated fire alarm at D’Andrea Banquets and Conference Center, 4419 Northwest Highway.
Two minutes later, a McHenry County sheriff’s deputy reported smoke showing from the building, according to Crystal Lake Fire Chief Paul DeRaedt.
The alarm was quickly upgraded to a working structure fire, which brought additional fire crews to the scene.
The first fire unit arrived on the scene at 1:32 a.m. and attempted to make entry into the building.
Firefighters had to back out due to an impending roof collapse, DeRaedt said. The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire.
Fire crews fought the fire from the exterior of the structure.
A request for mutual aid through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was initiated to the second alarm moments later.
DeRaedt said the fire had quickly spread through multiple areas within the wood-framed building.
Several ladder trucks with hose streams were established around the perimeter of the building to control the fire.
The fire was declared under control just before 5:15 a.m.
The building was not equipped with a fire sprinkler system, DeRaedt said. There were no injuries to any firefighters.
The building is considered a total loss and the building’s owners were at the scene and working with fire investigators.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Crystal Lake Fire Rescue investigators, other area fire investigators and Crystal Lake police investigators.
“Due to the collapse of portions of the roof, it will be some time before a cause can be determined,” DeRaedt said.

“Rocky Mount Fire Department purchased the fire alarm equipment from the Gamewell Company. The receipt on the wall for the purchase is dated 1910. The fire alarm system is in working condition even now. It worked as telegraph system that rang bells in the fire stations until 1984. The system had several components. The first component was the boxes that were mounted on the poles throughout the city. Each box has its own number. The one on display here is #24. The box was connected by wires to the repeater under the glass and a bell at the main fire station.
When a fire occurred a citizen would go to the box, open the door and pull the lever down. A wheel inside the box would go around and make the bell in the station ring a certain number of times to tell the dispatcher which box had been operated. Then the citizen would wait at the box for the fire department to get there.
The bell would ring in the main fire station, the dispatcher would note which box had operated and take the correct wheel and it on the machine and pull that lever. The bells would ring again, this time the repeater (under glass on right) would operate and ring the big bell in the tower to alert the volunteers of a fire. The big bell would ring the same number of times the box was. In this case, the bell would ring 2 times and then 4 times for box number 24. Box number 313 would ring 3 times and 1 time and 3 times.
The firemen had a list of the boxes and they would listen to the bell ring to kwon where the fire was. The telephone company printed the list in the cover of the phone book and any citizen who heard the bell would know where the alarm was too. If a fireman didn’t hear all of the bell tolls he could go to the station and look at the paper strip (under glass on the left and the holes would show 2 holes and then 4 holes for box number 24.
The telephone systems became the way people called the fire department and the creation of the 911 system put this alarm system out of business. On the table are two telephones the replaced the alarm bell system.”

Mechanical issues with fire engines plagued firefighters who struggled to control a fire at a home in Harvard Sunday evening, leading to a total loss of the house.
The Harvard Fire Protection District was called at 12:05 p.m. Sunday to the 19000 block of Altenburg Road, which is east of Harvard along Route 173, for a report of a house fire.
The fire is believed to have started in a bathroom of the two-story house and then spread to the attic. Firefighters were having issues getting water on the fire after two of their fire engines reportedly experienced mechanical problems, leading the fire to spread rapidly and fully engulf the home.
The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was utilized and upgraded to a fifth alarm, bringing additional fire crews and water tankers from through McHenry County to the scene.
The home is set back on a 300 foot driveway and the area has no fire hydrants so water had to be brought in by water tanker trucks. Everyone escaped the home but the homeowner suffered minor injuries and was transported to Mercy Harvard Hospital.
As of 3:45 p.m., firefighters are continuing to work at the scene to extinguish the fire. Investigators are working to determine a cause of the fire, which is not believed to be suspicious in nature, officials said.

Dad and I were very impressed by the former bank building. The community must have come together to refurbish this beautiful old building!
I looked at this place on google earth street view and it was not refurbished when they took the street view photos.
Our favorite feature was the old burglar alarm! How cool is that!? And it was not on the building in the old street view photos so maybe it was added after the remodel? It's so cool! Made in Minneapolis apparently.
Isn't it all spiffy? I just love what they've done with the place. Dad went around back and found an unlocked door leading to a nice little area with a history of the town displayed as well as bathrooms.
