Firefighters battled an extra-alarm fire Saturday morning that destroyed a Crystal Lake home after its garage became engulfed in flames, fire officials said.
The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 11:16 a.m. Saturday to the 6500 block of Scott Lane in unincorporated Crystal Lake for a report of a garage fire.
Crystal Lake Fire Chief Paul DeRaedt said one of the occupants of the residence discovered the fire and called 911.
Firefighters arrived within six minutes and found heavy fire conditions in the attached garage, DeRaedt said.
The fire then extended into the attic of the home. All five occupants, including a dog, made it out of the home safely.
The home is in an area that does not have fire hydrants. The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to the third alarm to bring fire trucks carrying large amounts of water to the scene.
The entire structure was deemed a total loss estimated at $375,000 DeRaedt said. There were no injuries to any firefighters or residents.
An initial investigation showed the fire may have started in a lawn tractor that was used just before the fire started.
The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department was assisted by several area fire departments along with the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and McHenry County Planning and Development.
Fire investigators from Algonquin-Lake in the Hills and Cary are assisting Crystal Lake with the investigation.

On Thanksgiving last year, we were burglarized. We have an alarm system and it went off, but there's lag time and the burglars know it. Enough of a lag time to clean out the jewelry from my bedside cabinet and cash from my husband's dresser.
15 minutes later, they caught one of the suspects.
My next door neighbor's son.
The ne'er do well 21 year old punk, who knew we were gone, (as were his parents), and all the other neighbor's surrounding our close-together homes.
The neighbor dude was a conspirator. He gave his punk ass friend the tools and the knowledge of how to get in and where to go. Dumb ass didn't see the sign in the front of the house with the alarm company in blue, or maybe he thought we were faking.
Every day, I have to see that shit head as he walks in and out of his house. 36" seperate our two homes, to say that it's uncomfortable is an understatement.
Every day, I try to love my neighbor, but we always keep an eye on our stuff.

What a terrific party that made a huge impact on Kids Need to Read! Here are my photos from the Phoenix Fan Fusion and Blue Ribbon Army’s “Rocket's Rad 80's Party- 2.0.” As you might recall, the original 80’s party, the proceeds of which benefited KNTR, was canceled during Phoenix Comic Fest due to the malfunctioning fire alarm system in the convention center. Well, at the Rocket's Rad 80's Party-2.0 KNTR was presented a check for $7,500 from the Arizona Lottery! That donation combined with donations online and at the party totaled over $10k for Kids Need to Read. We are so grateful for everyone who contributed: Square Egg Entertainment (Phoenix Fan Fusion), Blue Ribbon Army, Arizona Lottery, Phoenix Convention Center, The Park, Noah's Arcade, Ash10 Nicole, Heroes United AZ, and all the people who contributed online or in person and came to dance the night away!

1/17/21 - Wonder Lake, Illinois
An occupant was found dead inside a home following an extra-alarm fire Saturday evening near Wonder Lake, authorities said.
The Wonder Lake Fire Protection District and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 10:13 p.m. Saturday to the 8000 block of West Route 120 in unincorporated Woodstock for a report of a structure fire.
The sheriff’s office received several 911 calls from people passing by that saw a house on fire, according to Wonder Lake Fire Chief Mike Weber.
Firefighters arrived and found the east side of the residence engulfed in flames that were approximately 10 feet above the roof, Weber said.
The blaze had extended from the first floor to the second floor of the residence and the home quickly became heavily engulfed in fire.
“We tried to make contact with any homeowners, everything was locked up and were unable to get inside,” Weber said.
The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to the second alarm level to bring additional firefighters and water tenders to the scene due to a lack of fire hydrants.
Firefighters pulled a hose line to extinguish the fire while other firefighters attempted to do an immediate search.
The heat inside the home was around 1,600 degrees and firefighters were unable to get inside.
The homeowner was initially unaccounted for and firefighters later located a deceased person inside the residence. An autopsy is being scheduled by the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
The blaze caused approximately $300,000 in damage and left the home a total loss.
The fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature but it is under investigation by the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal, Wonder Lake Fire Protection District and the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.

5/1/21 - Wonder Lake, Illinois
A garage burned to the ground and spread to two homes, leaving one uninhabitable, Saturday afternoon in Wonder Lake, fire officials said.
The Wonder Lake Fire Protection District and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 4:30 p.m. Saturday to the 2900 block of East Chestnut Drive for a report of a structure fire.
Firefighters arrived on the scene to find an approximately 30-foot by 30-foot garage on fire which had two boats, two cars and motorcycles inside it.
Wonder Lake Fire Protection District Mike Weber said the burning garage, which was not attached to the home, quickly spread to the home.
While crews were fighting the blaze, a tree caught fire and a branch from it fell down on a nearby house, catching that home on fire as well.
The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to bring additional firefighters and equipment to the scene.
No injuries were reported and the first home that caught fire was deemed uninhabitable, while the second home that caught fire was deemed habitable.
It is not known what caused the blaze to start. A damage estimate was not immediately available.

4/5/21 - Cary, Illinois
The state fire marshal was called to assist with the investigation into a well-engulfed house fire in Cary Monday morning that left a firefighter injured and a family dog missing.
The Cary Fire Protection District responded around 6:39 a.m. Monday to the 500 block of Holly Lynn Drive for a report of a structure fire.
Cary Fire Protection District Lt. Michael Douglass said an off-duty firefighter arrived on the scene first and confirmed the rear of a two-story home was well involved in fire.
Firefighters arrived and began a fire attack. No one was inside the house at the time of the fire.
Douglass said that the home is in an area that does not have any fire hydrants so firefighters had to set up for rural water supply operations using portable water pools.
The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to the first level to bring additional resources from neighboring towns to the scene.
The incident was later upgraded to a second alarm for more equipment and resources, Douglass said.
It took multiple hose lines as well as an elevated master stream to extinguish the fire, which was declared under control at 8:16 a.m.
Firefighters remained on the scene for several additional hours performing salvage and overhaul operations.
One firefighter was not feeling well and was transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington where he was treated and released. No civilians were injured.
The house was a complete loss but a damage estimate was not immediately available.
The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.
A total of 27 Cary Fire Protection District firefighters responded to the scene in addition to dozens of firefighters from other departments.
The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills, Barrington, Barrington-Countryside, Fox River Grove, Nunda Rural and Wauconda fire departments responded to the scene initially.
The Crystal Lake, East Dundee, Lake Zurich, Long Grove, McHenry, Mundelein, Palatine Rural, Rolling Meadows, Woodstock and Wonder Lake fire departments were called once the alarm was upgraded.
Cary’s fire station was covered by crews from Huntley and Carpentersville.

XO Vision DX370 Universal Car Alarm System.Compare Prices!XO Vision DX370 prices at a glance.XO Vision DX370 reviews.
This is about as close as one is normally allowed to get to the chancel and north chapel at Lapworth church, as the entire eastern half of the building is rendered off limits by a sensitive alarm system.
This was bitterly disappointing as not only could the fine window by Richard Stubington (whose amazing east window at Packwood I'd just seen) not be seen in detail, the church's most famous treasure, an Eric Gill Madonna & Child relief, was totally invisible (being mounted on the reverse side of the right hand pillar!)
It was a frustrating experience, as the best things in the church were so close, but out of reach. I left a frustrated note in the visitors book about how sorry I was to have had to miss out on the Eric Gill and the glass, and came back for one more glimpse of that rich blue window just out of range, but the story doesn't end there........
On my final attempt to take this picture before leaving I leant slightly, without realising, just over the rope that cordoned off everything from the front nave pew eastwards. In the next instant a beeping noise errupted!
As I ran to the door to seek help it stopped so I assumed everything was ok. But then it got from bad to worse when I'd got outside, ear splitting and inescapable, but nobody was around to hear it other than me!
I went to the rectory across the road and managed to rouse the vicar's wife, (I don't think they'd noticed till then the siren wailing from the steeple!) She was pleasant and accepted my apologies as the siren suddenly stopped, the panic was over! Another lady who was a churchwarden had heard the siren and came to switch it off herself. Phew!
I went over to apologise to her for the inconvenience and explained what had happened. She was most gracious about the whole situation and reckoned I'd probably been unlucky enough to be right next to the sensor for the alarm to have gone off so easily.
The outcome of all this ironically was a happy one for me, as the kind lady offered to wait until I'd had a look at the inaccessible areas before switching the alarm back on! Thus I got to see all that I had been frustrated about missing out on, thanks to the generosity of an individual I had in effect, though inadvertedly, inconvenienced; she was an absolute star, and that was an act of kindness I shan't soon forget!
