From the concert where The Commanded Heart and the other LGBT Purge commemorative songs were premiered. The event started with a heart-stopper - the fire alarm system started to go, a persistent loud beep and strobe lights. Everyone prayed we wouldn't have to evacuate and those prayers were answered! Whew... I was a bit of the odd man out in the wardrobe department, but that stems from my sense that we commemorate and honour the sacrifices of those before us by living life joyously and with exuberance. I'm reluctant to post too much of The Commanded Heart itself, as Geoff and I won't own the rights for a while, but will post the lyrics as sung which where printed in the program, and a link from somebody who did record the song.

There is no way that we would be as successful or have the high reviews that we do if we only worked in the summertime. It is not surprising to us at all that the above remarks came from an employee of a local alarm company in the area for which this Facebook page was made. Many local companies try to discredit our efforts in order to promote the view that what they offer is the only choice homeowners have when it comes to protecting their family. While we can’t speak for other Edmonton alarm companies, our policies do not include forgetting about all of our customers outside of the Edmonton area after their systems have been installed—in fact, it is quite the opposite.

Telegraphic alarm systems fascinate me. Alarms were struck on these systems back in the days before telephones and radios, and continued to be used well after such modern technologies became routine.
I believe this device was used to automate the sending of alarms from the central office to the fire stations. Set the box number (of the street-side alarm box) with the knobs, and it would tap out that number on a circuit that would ring bells in the stations. The firefighters would then consult a card file to look up the location of the box, and see if they were pre-assigned to respond to an alarm at that location.
As far as I know this is the old fire alarm system in the Almira Hotel and I don't believe it works. But it's a nice looking bell.

Mechanical issues with fire engines plagued firefighters who struggled to control a fire at a home in Harvard Sunday evening, leading to a total loss of the house.
The Harvard Fire Protection District was called at 12:05 p.m. Sunday to the 19000 block of Altenburg Road, which is east of Harvard along Route 173, for a report of a house fire.
The fire is believed to have started in a bathroom of the two-story house and then spread to the attic. Firefighters were having issues getting water on the fire after two of their fire engines reportedly experienced mechanical problems, leading the fire to spread rapidly and fully engulf the home.
The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was utilized and upgraded to a fifth alarm, bringing additional fire crews and water tankers from through McHenry County to the scene.
The home is set back on a 300 foot driveway and the area has no fire hydrants so water had to be brought in by water tanker trucks. Everyone escaped the home but the homeowner suffered minor injuries and was transported to Mercy Harvard Hospital.
As of 3:45 p.m., firefighters are continuing to work at the scene to extinguish the fire. Investigators are working to determine a cause of the fire, which is not believed to be suspicious in nature, officials said.

What a terrific party that made a huge impact on Kids Need to Read! Here are my photos from the Phoenix Fan Fusion and Blue Ribbon Army’s “Rocket's Rad 80's Party- 2.0.” As you might recall, the original 80’s party, the proceeds of which benefited KNTR, was canceled during Phoenix Comic Fest due to the malfunctioning fire alarm system in the convention center. Well, at the Rocket's Rad 80's Party-2.0 KNTR was presented a check for $7,500 from the Arizona Lottery! That donation combined with donations online and at the party totaled over $10k for Kids Need to Read. We are so grateful for everyone who contributed: Square Egg Entertainment (Phoenix Fan Fusion), Blue Ribbon Army, Arizona Lottery, Phoenix Convention Center, The Park, Noah's Arcade, Ash10 Nicole, Heroes United AZ, and all the people who contributed online or in person and came to dance the night away!

Considering the size of this place, you would think they would be required to have a centralized alarm system. While parts of the system seem to have been centralized (as seen in later pics), this one clearly was not. The strange part about this was that this appeared in the main building, near the health club and pool. The sign reads, "In case of fire pull alarm then dial 911 for fire dept., local alarm only, not connected to fire dept."
