I could hear the 40 for ages before it staggered out of the whiteout and up to the summit with a lengthy 09.45 Su Glasgow C - Red Bank Vans on 15 January 1984.

31130 southbound on 14/7/1990.At that time the telegraph poles were still in situ.I think it was rare to see a 31 in this livery on the line,I can't recall getting any other shots of one

A lot today's enthusiasts have an occasional moan about the mix rakes of coaching stock they see on various trains. May be some need a reminder of the hidious Pilkington 'K' Glass coach stock that was around in the early 1990's! No matter what was hauling the set, it looked out of place (or was it really the other way around). Approaching the summit of Ais Gill (MP260) on the S&C line, No 47524 heads the 'Doncaster Free Press' Charter. 1Z30 Doncaster - ECML - Carlisle - S&C - York - Doncaster 16th May 1992.

The temporary GBRF Gypsum flow to Drax continues, as it is expected to do so until later in the month. Making the most of this flow, I ventured to the site of the old signal box and loops at Ais Gill summit. 66785 lifts 6Z97 Newbiggin - Drax over the top, having conquered the long climb from the north.

LNER Gresley K4 Class 2-6-0 No 61994 'The Great Marquess' slogs up the final few metres to Ais Gill summit with the 'Fellsman' back in August 2012.

A sight we are unlikely to see again as 61994 is now a museum exhibit in Scotland.

Ex GWR Castle Class 4-6-0 No 5043 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe' crossing Ais Gill viaduct with the southbound CME in wonderful light.

An unidentified Class 47 storms across Ais Gill viaduct with a "Cumbrian Mountain Express" c.1981. I think I may have been expecting steam here! In those days access was straight up from the road below and under the viaduct, it's much more difficult today.

This is a wider view of Carnforths Jubilee 45627 " Sierra Leone" ( 45699 " Galatea" ) breasting the summit of the climb from Appleby with 13 on the hook. The Jubilee was around 12-15 minutes down on booked time here which was a great effort considering the load she had behind her. The bridge before the summit could be seen from here in years gone by but unfortunately the lineside trees have grown to a huge size over the years taking the view of the bridge and the train away.

In May 1967 I got a transfer from my Leeds signal-box (which had closed with the opening of Leeds PSB) to one on the West Line from Newcastle, travelling north on 1S49 the 1025 Leeds to Glasgow Central couldn't resist a shot of Ais Gill box. The next couple of years would see the family making regular trips over the S&C back from Cumberland to visit relatives in Yorkshire.

This is the little lake (as the name suggests) Lochan an Ais in the Scotland highlands, looking towards the popular Stac Pollaidh peak, as I photographed it one cold summer morning back in 2011.

Although I didn’t have to do any hike in the wilderness to get there (the main A835 road is right on my back), the view towards this way is completely unspoiled by any modern “additions”. That’s why I decided to submit this in Rob Scamp’s Challenge #87 Wild Places on our friendly Nikon DSLR Forum group.
