Somehow we got sun here thanks to her running slightly early. Shame the 57 was working as much as it was but I suppose it's a fair train for her.

4th April 1998 and 6024 struggles up the final section to Ais Gill summit. I decided to mend this negative, it was very damaged , as upon second look I like the man with the child and the people looking out of the windows as well as the line of cars in the distance. Yup it is a grainy as they come but for me it sums up the mood and thought of the struggle.

The logs were running 32 minutes late and the light had gone. However a joint effort processing this image with Michael Rhodes (Lightroom + photoshop) we achieved a reasonable result.

The silence around Ais Gill is briefly disturbed as LSL Brush Type 4 Class 47, 47 593 passes over the summit with the ECS from Appleby to Skipton in lighting conditions that photographers of steam can only dream about.

This was my first time out since early March but was well worth the very early get-up and drive up the M6.

With enough of a gap after 6K05, knowing that the logs were about 30 mins late of Carlisle and combined with the Winter clock, it was gambled that the shot at Ais Gill viaduct would be on. This shot is only doable when the train is running late in the Spring before the clocks change, the lack of leaves also reducing the obstruction from that pesky tree. Here 70804 leads 6J37 Carlisle - Chirk across the arches on the climb to the summit.

Princess Coronation class 46229 " Duchess of Hamilton" storms towards Ais Gill carrying the iconic " Caledonian" headboard back in February 1984. This magnificent machine topped the summit that day just short of 50 mph with 13 on the hook. The weather was wet and freezing but the sight and sound the Duchess made that day was just fantastic and never to be forgotten, by me at least.....
