Nikon 50 f1,2 ais

The poor light,an easterly wind and a very mixed rake of stock was an unattractive combination so I looked for a different angle at Ais Gill and was pleasantly surprised the Princess kept working past the summit. However the slide was underexposed and stayed in the reject box until fairly recently when I decided to see what it looked like in mono and I think it has produced an acceptable result. It remains the only shot I have from that spot.Taken 30/3/1996.

Nice to see my trusty Vauxhall Belmont parked by the house !

47593 approaches Ais Gill summit working 1Z44 Appleby-Skipton on 8th August 2020.

Contrary to the weather forecast, by 11.00hrs, the clouds rolled in and it was less than 10% chance of getting in sun. So after waiting patiently at Ais Gill, having dinner and watching the gloom, it was time to get into position at MP260 and hope for the best. Very much to my surprise, 37667 (D6851) works up to the summit wiith 1Z44 14.38hrs Appleby to Skipton 'Staycation Express' with low and behold, a shaft of sunlight lights the loco just as approaches. Lucky indeed but appreciated. 9th September 2020.

A what the hell am I doing here moment back in the day during a blizzard at Ais Gill. 40082 crawls past and over the top, then it was back to fotting diverted 47's crazy when I think back. 15 January 1984.

My wife put in a water Lilly display in the front yard for me because she knows I like to shoot them. So now I have them growing right out front. One thing I am noticing is that unless I am doing street stuff I am reaching for vintage gear when I shoot. This was done with the venerable D800 and a Nikon 180mm 2.8 AIS.I don't know if this vintage gear thing is a phase or just something new but, I rarely reach for the new stuff these days.

The classic 'close-up' perspective of Ais Gill viaduct, favoured by many photographers over the decades is alas no longer available due to the installation of railings on the parapet and elsewhere, and not least tree growth obliterating a clear view of the arches, but it is still a splendid grandstand location to see locomotives, steam or diesel, climbing the final leg of the 'mountain section' of the Settle-Carlisle line. Approaching the end of its mainline certificate, 46115 is sounding better than it has for some time as confidently blasts over the viaduct heading the 1Z87 14:40 Carlisle to London Euston 'Cumbrian Mountain Express' on Saturday 20th May 2017.
