Aggregate Ponds Info

Aggregate Ponds (Milepost 118 of the North Cascades Highway)

About one mile west of the Goodell Creek Campground is the entrance road to these human-made ponds. Material dredged from this area was used in the construction of SR 20. Now the ponds are excellent birding areas. Keep in mind that these ponds are owned by Seattle City Light and vehicle access is not permitted. Park at least fifty feet from the gate and continue on foot.

TAXONOMY

Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Cnidaria

Class: Anthozoa

Subclass: Hexacorallia (includes stony corals, all sea anemones, tube anemones, and zoanthids)

Order: Actiniaria (sea anemones)

Family: Actiniidae (largest family of sea anemones)

Genus/species: Anthopleura elegantissima

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS: Most are olive to bright green (depending on the species of algal symbionts present) with tentacles tipped in pink. The oral disk has approximately 100 tentacles in three or four rows around its margins. Those that are deficient in photosynthetically active radiation, such as under docks or in caves, lack symbionts and are pale yellow to white in color.

Disc 2-3 cm (0.78-1.2 in) across, under water.

DISTRIBUTION/HABITAT: Common in tide pools. The body of the anemone is firmly attached to rock substrate and detritus and sand adheres to the column almost covering them.

DIET IN THE WILD: Capture tiny crustaceans and other animals past their tentacles using their stinging nematocysts (also called cnidocytes) on the surface of their tentacles.

REPRODUCTION: To clone themselves, anemones split in half—literally tearing themselves apart (asexual reproduction). Aggregating anemones also reproduce sexually by broadcasting eggs and sperm.

PREDATORS: Their are few known predators but include the nudibranch Aeolidia papillosa, leather star Dermasterias imbricata and mosshead sculpin Clinocottus globiceps.

REMARKS: When one colony of genetically identical polyps encounters a different genetic colony, the two will wage territorial battles. A. elegantissima has specialized tentacles called acrorhagi to deter non identical colonies from encroaching on their space. It extends the acrorhagi to attack the competing anemone with nematocytes leaving behind a 'peel' of the ectoderm and nematocysts that causes tissue necrosis in the receiving animal.

Scenario A2-550 in Year 2100 with Climate Sensitivity Equal to 5.5 Degrees C Annual Mean Temperature with Aggregate Impacts Calibration and Enhanced Adaptive Capacity

Management-induced degradation of water stable soil aggregates resulting in destabilized soil carbon; surface crusting; reduced water infiltration, water holding capacity, and aeration; depressed resilience to extreme weather; increased ponding and flooding; increased soil erosion and plant stress; and reduced habitat and soil biological activity.

Standing water or evidence of surface runoff on the soil resulting from poor infiltration can be an indication of poor aggregate stability resulting in surface crusting. When soil aggregates near the soil surface slake apart (figure 1) and are reduced to a flat layer when the soil gets saturated and then dry out, a crust is formed. This can make it very difficult to impossible for new seedlings to emerge. This condition also reduces rainfall infiltration.

By leaving previous crop residue on the surface, soil crusting can be reduced. By also implementing a basic soil health system aggregate stability can be achieved. Conservation practices such as crop rotation, cover crop, no till and prescribed grazing (when grazing cover crops) can address this resource concern.
