CEMEX Marine Aggregates has been Commended in the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards. CEMEX Marine was entered in the Transport, Storage and Distribution sector and has been commended for its outstanding approach to the prevention of accidents and ill- health.

John Miller, Director Marine Aggregates "This is a fantastic achievement particularly as ships operate in very hazardous environments not just at sea but during major repairs. It therefore reflects our efforts in not only reinforcing the right behaviours with our officers and crew but also working with our major contractors and ship repair yards to achieve what everyone wants, zero injuries. In this respect it has been a tremendous effort from a team who constantly seek to look after themselves and their colleagues.

“We operate a fleet of 6 vessels on a 24/7 365 day basis that supply millions of tonnes of sand and gravel into the UK and near Continent. It is a constant challenge as we all know, excellent safety performance demands that everyone makes the right decision every time - the good thing is that our employees, contractors and ship repairers are up for the challenge.

This award is one of 12 awards gained by CEMEX UK at the RoSPA awards and included six gold awards and two Presidents Awards.

An aggregate quarry near River No. 2 beach on the Western Area Peninsula. A construction boom in the country and growing demand for building materials are leading to unregulated quarrying in the Western Area Peninsula. This mine backs onto the Western Area Peninsula Forest Reserve, which has been nominated for Sierra Leone's tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage Status.

The tide was quite low while we were at the ocean, and I got to see tons of these anemone! They are so beautiful when under the water.

These were under water and it was raining, so I'm surprised they came out!!

Management-induced degradation of water stable soil aggregates resulting in destabilized soil carbon; surface crusting; reduced water infiltration, water holding capacity, and aeration; depressed resilience to extreme weather; increased ponding and flooding; increased soil erosion and plant stress; and reduced habitat and soil biological activity.

Standing water or evidence of surface runoff on the soil resulting from poor infiltration can be an indication of poor aggregate stability resulting in surface crusting. When soil aggregates near the soil surface slake apart (figure 1) and are reduced to a flat layer when the soil gets saturated and then dry out, a crust is formed. This can make it very difficult to impossible for new seedlings to emerge. This condition also reduces rainfall infiltration.

By leaving previous crop residue on the surface, soil crusting can be reduced. By also implementing a basic soil health system aggregate stability can be achieved. Conservation practices such as crop rotation, cover crop, no till and prescribed grazing (when grazing cover crops) can address this resource concern.

For more information on South Dakota's resource concerns, visit www.sdresrouceconcerns.org or www.farmers.gov/conserve/tool. You can also reach out to your local NRCS office or Conservation District. Find your local USDA NRCS office and employee directory at: bit.ly/ContactNRCSSD
