Melbourne's Yarra River is affectionately know as the upside down river due to it's permanently brown appearance.
The much maligned muddy colour of the Yarra is caused by the easily eroded clay soils of the water catchment. The water was clear at the time of European settlement, but intensive land clearing and development since the mid 1800s has resulted in the presence of microscopic clay particles. The particles are kept suspended by the turbulence in some parts of the middle and lower sections of the river. When the river water combines with marine salts as it enters Port Phillip, the suspended particles clump together and sink. The muddy appearance does not indicate an unclean waterway. In fact, the Yarra is probably one of the cleanest capital city rivers in the world. Since the major clean-up campaigns of the late 1970s and 1980s, the river has again become home to several species of fish and even the occasional dolphin.
This is affectionately called The Nightmare Tudor due to it's heavily accentuated Gothic lines.
The Nathan G. Moore House by Frank Lloyd Wright was completely redesigned and rebuilt in 1923 after the original Wright designed, more conventional Tudor style house was severely damaged by an electrical fire.
Though clearly based on the Tudor style, Wright also drew on Mayan elements, his Textile Block concept, and the organic design concepts of Louis Sullivan.
Lots more good info about the house on wikipedia and www.steinerag.com/flw/Periodicals/InlandArch&NewsRec.htm

Marina City, affectionately known as "the corn cob", is a mixed-use residential-commercial building complex in Chicago, Illinois, United States, North America, designed by architect Bertrand Goldberg. The multi-building complex opened between 1963 and 1967 and occupies almost an entire city block on State Street on the north bank of the Chicago River on the Near North Side, directly across from the Loop. Portions of the complex were designated a Chicago Landmark in 2016.
The complex consists of two 587-foot (179 m), 65-story apartment towers, opened in 1963, which include physical plant penthouses. It also includes a 10-story office building (now a hotel) opened in 1964, and a saddle-shaped auditorium building originally used as a cinema. The four buildings, access driveways, and a small plaza that originally included an ice rink are built on a raised platform next to the Chicago River. Beneath the platform, at river level, is a small marina for pleasure craft, giving the structures their name.

Capturing the Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis), affectionately named "Ruby" by the Avian Reconditioning Center in Apopka, Florida, was a moment that encapsulates the spirit of this majestic raptor. As a photographer, what drew me in was not just the stark contrast of Ruby's plumage against the natural background but also her regal poise. The photo freezes her keen, intense gaze, which speaks volumes about her predatory prowess. The light perfectly illuminates her feathers, highlighting the textures and subtle color variations that make this species so enchanting.
It was an honor to shoot at the Avian Reconditioning Center, a facility dedicated to the rehabilitation and education of birds like Ruby. The center serves as a sanctuary for these magnificent creatures, and it's open to public visits. So, if you're in the Apopka area, don't miss an opportunity to see Ruby and her fellow raptors up close. My photography journey aims to not just capture these moments but to also drive home the importance of conservation and sustainable interaction with our environment.

The Tibetan Terrier, 'Holy Dog of Tibet,' is an ancient watchdog and companion long associated with Buddhist monasteries. A profusely coated, small-to-medium-sized dog with 'snowshoe' feet, the Tibetan Terrier is affectionate, sensitive, and clever.
Lively, alert, kind and affectionate. The Lapphund is very receptive, attentive and willing to work. Its abilities as a good herding dog made it very useful in the reindeer trade. It is very versatile, suitable for obedience training, agility, herding, tracking, etc. It is easy to train, full of endurance and toughness.

Affectionately known as Twentytwo, this building is a commercial giant that adds an aura of modernity to London’s heart. Its completion in 2020 has bestowed the City of London’s financial district with an awe-inspiring emblem that reaches a soaring 278 meters into the sky, extending across 62 floors. This architectural masterpiece captivates the eye with its distinctive form, tapering gracefully as it ascends. The essence of 22 Bishopsgate is further enriched by its amenities, including a remarkable viewing gallery perched on the 58th floor, an inviting restaurant, and a well-appointed fitness center.
Sometimes he will set up on the carpet by staring at you with such tender, affectionate and human eyes that they intend to you and we will no longer be able to believe that a soul does not reside there....................A volte si metterà sul tappeto fissandoti con gli occhi così teneri, affettuosi e umani che intendono e non saremo più in grado di credere che un'anima non risieda lì
Jaisalmer, affectionately known as "the Golden City," is nestled right in the middle of the stunning Thar Desert. Its nickname truly fits, thanks to the beautiful yellow sandstone used to build its structures, which comes straight from the surrounding desert. The streets of Jaisalmer hide small treasures everywhere, offering a fairytale-like sight, just like here in this grand gate, where the light of an elegant chandelier gilds the lobed arcade. An entrance imbued with a special charm.

Affectionately known as the "Two-chon", this Buchon is a sight for sore eyes. But, it's a truly unique warbird full of history and the Victory Show this year provided a great chance to see it in action.

Bridges Reflected on the Mud Flats.
These three bridges, which straddle the Firth of Forth, were all built in different centuries.
The first is a Rail Bridge, which was built in the 19th Century, is affectionately known simply as 'The Forth Bridge' and is designated as a World Heritage Site.
The bridge in the middle, which was built in the 20th Century, is called 'The Forth Road Bridge'.
The bridge in the foreground, which was built in the 21st Century, was named in a local competition as 'The Queensferry Crossing', as it links the towns of North Queensferry, Fife and Queensferry, Edinburgh Region.
The Wellenweber Antenna, affectionately called "The Elephant Cage" by the troops.
Wikipedia: The Wullenweber (the original name introduced by Dr. Hans Rindfleisch was Wullenwever) is a type of Circularly Disposed Antenna Array (CDAA) sometimes referred to as a Circularly Disposed Dipole Array (CDDA). It is a large circular antenna array used for radio direction finding. It was used by the military to triangulate radio signals for radio navigation, intelligence gathering and search and rescue. Because its huge circular reflecting screen looks like a circular fence, the antenna has been colloquially referred to as the elephant cage. The term wullenwever was the World War II German cover term used to identify their secret CDAA research and development program; its name is unrelated to any person involved in the program.

Affectionately referred to by employees as 'The Sisters' Conway Scenic Railroad's ex Canadian National FP9s (6505 & 6516) built in 1954 and 1957 respectively passed from CN to VIA Rail in 1978 before being picked up by the Conway Scenic in 1995 when they expanded into Crawford Notch. 6505 & 6516 would become PAR 1 & 2 when traded to Pan Am Railways in March 2010 for GP38 252 and GP35 216.
Here they are running around the Notch Train beside the former Maine Central Fabyan Station (just out of sight to the left) at MP 89 as measured from Portland Union Station via the Mountain Sub. After 27 years calling New England home the famous duo departed for Waycross, Georgia lately for an uncertain fate for their new owner CSX Transportation. It will be interesting to see what their next chapter brings.

Interesting Facts About Cheetahs ...................
Cheetahs are caring, affectionate and dedicated mothers. They spend a long time caring for their cubs and teaching them essential survival skills like hunting. Cubs typically stay with their mothers for one and a half to two years.
The cheetah originated over 4 million years ago. That’s long before any of the other big cats of today.
In Native American symbology, the cheetah represents swiftness, insight and focus.
The cheetah is the fastest land animal in the world, reaching speeds of up to 113km/h. They can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just 3 seconds.
When running, cheetahs use their tail to steer, like a rudder for a boat.
Cheetahs are the only large cat that can turn in mid-air while sprinting.
Cheetahs do not roar like lions, however they do have a range of other meaningful vocalisations such as purring, growling and a variety of contact calls which resemble bird-like chirping sounds.
The Fox Red Labrador also called the Red Fox Lab, and sometimes known as the Ruby Labrador, is a stunning dog. He is a Labrador Retriever like any other, but with the color of a red fox. Despite being labeled as red in color, he is technically just a deeper shade of the traditional yellow Labrador. Like any Labrador, he is energetic and fun to be around, but at the same time, he is also affectionate and gentle with his family, which is why he makes such a great family pet.
Standing on the shores of Two Jack Lake (often affectionately called Jackson Lake by locals), you are witnessing a quiet, cyclical and monumental struggle. The image captures a frozen world on the brink of surrender. The vast white sheet of ice, which only weeks ago felt as solid as the granite peaks of Mount Rundle in the distance, is beginning to fray. Dark pools of turquoise water peek through like eyes opening after a long slumber, signalling the inevitable return of spring to Banff National Park.
To us, this transition feels like a seasonal heartbeat—a predictable rhythm of the year. But across geological time, this thaw is more than just a change in the weather; it is the visible edge of a chisel that has been carving the Canadian Rockies for millions of years.
The Great Chisel: Frost Wedging
As the sun warms the landscape, the process of frost wedging—one of nature's most patient and powerful tools—comes alive. During the day, snow and ice melt into liquid water, trickling into the microscopic cracks of the surrounding limestone and shale. When the sun dips behind the jagged horizon and the temperature plunges, that water freezes and expands by about 9%.
This expansion exerts thousands of pounds of pressure per square inch. Bit by bit, cycle by cycle, the mountain is pried apart. What looks like a peaceful spring day is actually a series of tiny explosions that, over geological epochs, reduce towering summits to scree slopes and boulders.
The Power of Flow
The melting ice on Two Jack Lake is part of a larger aquatic journey. As the seasons shift, billions of tons of ice across the park transform into rushing torrents. This meltwater isn't just "water"—it is a slurry of sediment and "glacial flour" (fine silt) that acts like sandpaper on the valley floor.
Over thousands of spring thaws, these seasonal pulses of water have deepened the U-shaped valleys that define the Rockies. The lake itself sits in a basin carved by these very forces. The transition we see in the photo—the softening of the ice—is the "activation" of the drainage system that carries the mountains, grain by grain, toward the sea.
Deep Time in a Single Frame
When we look at the shifting seasons, we are watching Earth’s "slow-motion" evolution. The snow on the peaks will eventually become the ice of a glacier if the climate cools, or the lifeblood of the forest if it warms.
The trees framing the lake, the deep shadows on the mountainside, and the breaking ice are all participants in a dance of entropy and creation. Every season leaves a scar, and every thaw writes a new line in the biography of the Earth.
Next time you stand by a thawing lake, remember that you aren't just seeing the end of winter. You are seeing the world being reshaped, one drop of meltwater at a time.
More 'affectionately' known as Pigeon.
STRANGELY, though they are among the commonest of birds, and pretty much universally disliked, we very seldom see them in our backyard. Don't know why. This shot was taken at the edge of the woods, along the railroad tracks.

Affectionately known as Chapell's Pond or just The Pond this is where I practically lived all through my growing up years! There were no cattails growing in it then. On this end it was shallow and when little we had to stay and play on this end, but all the "big kids" were at the Other end and that is where all the action was and of course that is where the little ones wanted to be! Your right of passage was when you could swim the whole length of it alongside of Dad and then finally you were allowed to play with the big kids! In the upper right corner of the photo you can see a part of the pavilion that was added by my sister and her husband. It's fantastic with electricity and a refrigerator! No running water so camping there was still a bit of a wild camp. Our tent was pitched further right than that and a little closer to the outhouse!! I forget the exact count, but something like 4 or 5 beautiful weddings have been held here with one more coming this summer. And for once I was up before Anita and the Grandbaby so had a lovely wander around looking and remembering. :)
