The RAF Reserve Depot Llanberis as it was officially called was a vast bomb store constructed in an old quarry and built over 2 levels for the storage of hundreds of tons of high explosive munitions. Constructed at floor level of an old quarry, the store was then covered with slate to provide protection from aerial bombing. In 1942, only 6 months after opening, a disaster occurred, when a large portion of the roof collapsed, blocking entry to the store and covering almost 14,000 tons of munitions. It is estimated that this one accident prevented access to around 20% of the RAFs total munition stock at the time.
After months of clearing, the munitions were recovered and the collapsed portion uncovered. Now what remains is a vast open atrium, the site of the 1942 collapse, and two floors of long storage tunnels.
This is the newer addition to Our Lady's Hospital formerly Eglinton asylum.
