Spectra from two parts of a butane gas flame (air-mixed - top; unmixed gas - bottom). Compared with the candle flame, the near infrared contains much stronger emission bands of water. The deep blue colour of the flame sheath is due to the recombination of free electrons with positive ions. The strong emissions from the visible (blue-green) part of the flame are due mostly to the C_2 molecule (two carbon atoms) but also to CN and CH.
The orange line shows a black body (Planck) spectrum which corresponds to the brightest, white-yellow, part of a candle flame - similar to the yellow tip of the bottom image. The broad, light-orange band is the infrared camera bandpass.

Most plant cells do not contain enough sodium to meet the needs of our domestic animals. Therefore all our animals should be fed salt to ensure their good health and best possible production and performance.
The salt in the body
Salt consists of sodium and chloride (NaCl). Sodium is crucial for many important body functions such as regulation of pH in the blood, muscle contraction, nerve impulses, heart rate and absorption of simple sugars and amino acids in the small intestine. Sodium is also the single most important substance for the regulation of fluid balance in the body. Sodium plays a very important role in the uptake of various minerals, trace elements and vitamins. The chloride ion is also very important in the body. It helps to regulate blood pH and it is also a necessary part of hydrochloric acid produced in the stomach, which in turn is needed for digestion.
Salt shortage
Salt shortage may initially perceive as diffuse symptoms in animals. The initial signs are impaired feed efficiency, decreased appetite and thirst and, for lactating animals, reduced milk production. Animals can also develop so-called perverse appetite. They lick on the interior or eat soil, manure and/or urine. Prolonged salt shortage gives muscle weakness and uncoordinated movements. Lactating animals are sensitive to salt deficiency because of the milks large content of sodium and chloride. Also animals in training are vulnerable, when large amounts of salt are excreted in the sweat. Temperature affects animal’s need of salt.
Excess salt
Excess salt is excreted in the urine. If too much salt is fed to animals they might become dehydrated. Free excess to water should always be ensured to animals that are fed salt. To encourage an animal to drink more, something sweet, like molasses or unsweetened apple juice, can be mixed into the water. Large excess of salt may cause abnormal thirst, muscle weakness and oedema. The risk of salt poisoning, however, is next to non-existent if the animals have access to water. Poultry and pigs are the animals that are most sensitive to salt excess.
Feeding salt
When given free access to salt lick it is difficult to know how much salt the animals actually get. Trials have shown that cows will lick about 30-60 grams, horses lick 20-40 grams and sheep licks 10-15 grams of salt lick per day. However the individual variation was evident. Most animals are able to avail themselves of its maintenance needs if they have free access to salt lick. Animals not able to
support their salt need via salt lick must be fed with salt mixed into the feed. We recommend that all animals should have free access to salt licks all year. Animals with large salt needs should be fed with extra salt. When feeding salt the animals should always have free access to water.

The reflectance spectra were obtained using a Sekonic C-7000 spectroradiometer fitted with a collimating tube selecting a 12° diameter acceptance beam tapering to zero response at 30°. To obtain the spectral readings, the tube was pointed 20° above the horizon for the sky and and 15° below the horizon for the sea.
The Sun was behind me and there is little sign of direct specular reflection of it in the FoV. There is, however, a small amount of cross-talk between the upward and downward pointing beams due to the beam profile that will result in a small dilution of the derived reflectance signal.
The plot in this post shows the following spectra:
1. The relative radiance spectrum of the Sun after extinction by Rayleigh and aerosol scattering and ozone absorption with the solar altitude of 46°appropriate to the time and place of the measurement (top grey line);
2. The relative radiance measurement of the sky centred 20° above the horizon (dashed light blue line);
3. The relative radiance measurement of the sea centred 15° below the horizon (dashed dark blue line);
4. The ratio of the sea to the sky spectra as reflectance which represent the same angular acceptance angle for both pointings (continuous red line);
5. A scaled Planck curve for the colour temperature of the sea as measured by the Sekonic (lower dashed grey line);
6. a representative reflectance curve measures from a mixed mat of freshwater algae including red and green varieties (dotted green line).
The oscillation in the red line above 720nm arises from the different water and molecular oxygen paths in the beams from the sea and sky from the strong telluric bands in this spectral region.
This type of measurement is frequently made by Earth resource satellites to track algal blooms around the globe but I was curious to measure it myself although, at such a grazing angle, it cannot be directly compared with direct look-down measurements.
I was surprised at how strongly the chlorophyll 'red-edge' at 700nm appeared and at the clear presence of reflection peaks in the green and yellow parts of the spectrum due to biological photopigments.
For me, it was surprising what such a simple measurement could tell us about the presence of life close to Earth's surface.

I received recently an unusual 35mm range-finder camera Graflex Graphic 35 made in the U.S.A. in 1955 (see below the details about Graflex company and the camera). After a complete inventory and blank mechanical/optical checking, I did a test film with a FOMAPAN 100. The light was metered using a Minolta Autometer III fitted with a 10° viewfinder for selective metering privileging this shadow areas.
The camera was equipped with an adapted French FOCA « Dyma » x3.5 36mm push-on filter plus the metal shade hood made for the FOCA Standard camera. To compensate the Dyma filter absorption the Autometer was set on 32 ISO instead of the nominal 100 ISO of the film. The Dyma FOCA filter is an original glass formula containing neodymium giving band-selective visible spectrum absorptions in the green and yellow so that proximate tonalities in these bands are better separated.
I did the all photos along the way to Lyon Saint-Jean, Lyon, France.

After the last view #37 exposed, the film was rewound to the taking cartridge and revealed in a Posso tank with 350 mL of Adox Adonal developer (identical to the original Agfa Rodinal in its formula of 1891) prepared at the dilution 1+50. The film was processed for 9min at 20°C.
The frames were then digitized using a Sony A7 camera (ILCE-7, 24MP) adapted to a macro Minolta Auto Bellow III with Minolta Bellow MD Macro lens 1:3.5 f=50mm and the dedicated slide duplicator Minolta. The light source was a LED panel (approx. 4x5') CineStill Cine-lite.
The RAW files obtained were inverted within the latest version of Adobe Lightroom Classic (version 15.4.1, June 2026) and edited to the final jpeg pictures without intermediate file. They are presented either as print files with frame or the full size JPEG's together with some documentary smartphone color pictures.

About the Graflex company and Graphic 35 camera:
Graflex (originally the Folmer & Schwing Manufacturing Company, founded in 1887 in New York) had long been renowned for its large- and medium-format press cameras (notably the Speed Graphic), which became the standard for photojournalism in the first half of the 20th century. After its acquisition by Kodak in 1905–1907, the works were moved to Rochester, New York. In 1926, following antitrust rulings, Graflex became independent again and continued production in Rochester until the early 1970s.
By the mid-1950s, large-format press cameras were losing ground to smaller, easier-to-use 35 mm cameras aimed at amateurs. Graflex responded by entering the 35 mm market. It had already marketed the Ciro 35 (derived from the earlier Cee-ay 35 of Candid Camera Corp., acquired via Ciro). In 1955 this design was thoroughly reworked into the Graphic 35.
Launch and Production
* Introduction: First shipments on 25 February 1955; press presentation on 8 March 1955 in New York.
* Manufacture: Body and final assembly in Rochester, N.Y. Lenses and shutters were imported from West Germany (Rodenstock or occasionally Enna “Graflar” 50 mm f/3.5 or f/2.8 lenses; Prontor-SVS leaf shutter, 1 s to 1/300 s + B, M/X sync, self-timer).

Distinctive Features
* Push-button focusing on either side of the lens (“wing focusing”), invented by Graflex instrument maker Louis M. Traino, who received a $4,000 company award (roughly $35,000–40,000 in today’s money). A “Visi-Ready” distance scale was visible from above.
* Front-mounted, sideways-pull shutter-release lever.
* Spectramatic (later Universal Spectramatic) flash system, devised by engineering director Vernon Whitman: colour-coded bands that simplified aperture selection according to distance and guide number.
* Separate viewfinder and split-image rangefinder windows; film advance by knob (not coupled to shutter cocking, allowing intentional double exposures).
* Solid die-cast metal body with satin chrome finish and silver-grey leatherette covering (some later examples darker).
These features—especially the push-button focusing—were heavily promoted and helped the camera sell strongly in its first year.
After 1957–58 Graflex shifted to Japanese-made models (the Graphic/Century 35 series by Kowa, the Graphic Jet, etc.). The original Rochester-built Graphic 35 remains a characteristic mid-1950s American design: robust, unusually ergonomic in its controls, and still relatively affordable on the used market today.
It is one of the few non-Kodak 35 mm cameras actually made in Rochester and illustrates Graflex’s attempt to adapt to the postwar 35 mm amateur boom.
I did not find at now the optical formula of the lens. The lens takes 27mm screw-on filter and the external diameter is 32mm. With a little adaptation (rind made in a film canister cap...) one could fit the French FOCA filter push-on 36mm.
It seems that no lens cap was proposed for the Graphic 35. With a cap of Kodak 35mm canister, I made a plastic one to protect the front lens.
The range-finder is slightly off calibrated at infinite but it easy to correct the small shift to set the correct value on the distance scale that is only engraved in feet.

The Sun in smoke from forest fires in the US and BC, obscuring the sky and making the Sun dim enough to see its disk easily naked eye, on August 25, 2015. This is a handheld shot from southern Alberta, with the 35mm lens and Canon 60Da.
750mL white rum, one orange with 44 holes, one coffee bean in each hole, aged 44 days.
Discard the orange (although it seems a shame to waste that much juice and whatever rum has soaked into it - I might try squeezing it into the jar first next time).
Filter the liquid and add sugar - the traditional recipe says to use 44tsp in the beginning, but the jar didn't have room. I just added simple syrup to taste. It turned out tasting best with about 200mL syrup, and 44tsp is about 200g of sugar, so I think it turned out right.
There was a little liquid lost in the process (spillage / absorption) so it ended up being about 550-600mL liquid after filtering. This fit nicely back into a 750mL bottle after doing some taste testing and adding syrup.
And the tasting: Smells mostly like oranges. The flavor starts off like sweet, mild coffee and then turns strongly orangy, which fades and leaves a nice combination of the two aftertastes. In short it's friggin' delicious. I'll definitely be making this again.

The Nobel prize for science in 2009 went to a team at UCLA for their work in showing that aging is essentially what happens when our DNA strands get split ends, start to unravel and shorten in length. When the end of our DNA strands slowly unravels and the length shortens, cell replication becomes less and less precise.
They evidenced that shortened telomeres in our DNA strands are really the fundamental underlying cause for aging and degenerative disease.
Telomerase is the body’s natural way of maintaining the health of the ends of the strands of DNA. And usually somewhere in our 30s, the body stops producing enough natural telomerase and our DNA begins to shorten in length, thus the slow crawl of aging begins.
Of course, pharmaceutical companies have been researching ways to extend shortened telomeres and prevent them from shrinking, but it turns out that nature has already created a perfect compound to replace telomerase in the roots of astragalus.
Cycloastragenol is a nearly identical analogue to the natural telomerase in our body, which means it has the exact same DNA preserving effects. Studies have already been done showing that cycloastragenol can be profoundly beneficial in preserving the length of our telomeres.
But don’t just go taking cycloastragenol!
For starters, make sure you are around 40 years old or older.
You never want to take cycloastragenol before your telomerase starts to naturally decline. This is not a supplement for vitality. This is not a tonic for youthful vigor and strength. Concentrated cycloastragenol is basically telomerase, which you need to keep your DNA healthy. But if you take this supplement when you’re young, your body may stop producing its own.
Further, even if you are over 40, then you need to take it carefully.
It can make you very ill if you take too much, and especially if you take a lot with a full stomach. Its really best to lick your finger and dip it into the powder and dissolve a small amount of powder in your mouth on an empty stomach. You let your saliva digest it in your mouth, and swallow it back only once it is all liquid and tasteless, and drink some water afterward as well.
This is a good way to take it at first, and you can gradually build up to more. You may want to this daily if you in your 50s, 60s or 70s, as this will greatly help to preserve the length of your telomeres.
Cycloastragenol is being ignored by the mainstream medical industry and pharmaceutical companies especially -likely because they cannot patent it.
And so far there really are no effective drugs on the market to lengthen or preserve telomeres.
Now, Stanford can perform a surgery which does the trick, and they have actually managed to re-extend shortened telomeres, “reversing the clock” so to speak, with a new RNA technique. This is beyond the prowess of cycloastragenol, which preserves telomeres but does not re-lengthen them.
Despite the success of this experimental surgery at Stanford, there are still no pharmaceutical drugs on the market to re-lengthen telomeres, nor to preserve them.
And maybe that’s really for the best, I think, after all pharmaceuticals are notorious for unwanted side effects and unknown long-term complications.
And moreover, why create a chemical drug when nature has already provided the perfect solution? Oh yeah…. because you can’t patent it!
Really the only caveat with cycloastragenol is that it a whole lot more expensive than most natural supplements. But when you compare it with the cost of surgery at Stanford or the probable price of a comparative pharmaceutical product…well then it looks very cheap indeed.
You know, for someone in their late 30s or 40s, a hundred dollars worth is enough to last a year, as you really only need to take tiny amounts.
If you are in your 50s or 60s, then you may want to invest closer to $1000 a year on these products, as natural telomerase declines very steadily after 40. Even at $1000 a year, or around $85 a month, cycloastragenol is well worth the investment into preserving the integrity of the most fundamental and important part of our bodies, our DNA itself.

Commercial 95 is also dimensionally stable and is highly resistant to shrinkage. The fabric is UV stabilized, non-absorptive to resist rot and incorporate three way lock-stitch construction which is fray and tear resistant. I always enjoy the "assignments" for Y SIN EMBARGO Magazine. They force me to conceptualize what I am doing. My interpretation of the latest assignment was that it was about "digtal materialism", that is, the desire to possess digital artifacts.
I began by thinking about storage (in the technical sense, e.g. hard disks, DVDs, etc.) which are fundametally needed to be digitally materialistic. I started shooting DVDs and their reflections. Pretty soon, I realized that a DVD was a kind of mirror. I had some luck previously shooting reflections of my TV off my coffee table. The TV provides a still image (if you pause) with lots of vibrant colors.
This led to my first submission, entitled Absorption, which is a reflection of a commercial off of the DVD. I believe it was a commercial for some kind of tropical vacation getaway, and the sunbathing model had her head tossed back looking up at the sky. The model's face fits almost perfectly in the DVD. The DVD has distorted her face into a kind of round shape, which makes her appear quite primitive. She appears to be gazing up, as if lost in thought. I call this "Absorption" because it symbolizes the capture of the digital artifact into storage, even though it is just a fleeting reflection. She is contained, at least mometarily, in the medium.
Next, I started wondering if I could build a large mirror out of several DVDs, and I did some experiments with small arrays of DVDs that didn't turn out so well. However, the idea led me back to an idea I had last year about replicating center pivot irrigation in art. If you are not familiar with center pivot irrigation, it is a method of crop irrigation that utilizes a watering system that rotates around a center pivot in a field. You can often see them as patterns of circular shapes from an airplane in large farming areas. I find these pivot irrigation systems quite beautiful.
So, my second submission, entitled Maintenance, was an attempt to replicate the circular shapes of a typical center pivot irrigation system using DVDs. I replicated a small piece of this image. (Can you see where?) This was an extraordinarily tedious project. I almost gave up several times. There are approximately 144 separate subimages. Each subimage was constructed from shots of DVDs, circuit boards, schematic diagrams, floppy disks, and hard drive enclosures. Each of these cells required multiple layers to construct. In some cases I used seven or eight layers to get the textures and colors I wanted. This symbolizes to me the idea that you have to maintain all of this information --- you have to back it up, index it, organize it, etc. And that our digital collections are much more than independent files, but rather there are connections amongst them, a kind of communication.

Why do we need Sodium Ascorbate?
The GLO Gene is absent in many people, scientists believe that this happened around 60 million years ago. The absence of this gene makes us unable to biosynthesize specific enzyme L- gulonolactone oxidase. This is an end stage liver enzyme that bio-converts blood glucose to Ascorbate, this means our bodies cannot produce any Ascorbate. In the long term, a lack of Ascorbate causes our bones to dissolve and teeth to fall out in other words sub-clinical scurvy and a tendency to development of cancer.
Ascorbic Acid is produced in large quantities in almost all animals, e.g. 6 grams a day in a goat, or up to 100grams daily if the goat is stressed. But it is not Ascorbic Acid that our body requires, rather a SALT of Ascorbic Acid. A daily supplementation of Ascorbate several times a day is a simple way to make up for this genetic defect.
Ascorbate is also essential for the hydroxylation of the amino acid Proline which forms hydroxyproline - a major component of collagen. Collagen is an essential structural protein in the body accounting for around a quarter of all the protein in our bodies and is critical to the structural integrity of our bodies.
Linus Pauling PhD (Twice Nobel Laureate) stated "It is highly probable that most people in the world would only receive 1- 2% of the amounts of Ascorbate that would keep them in the best of health".

World premiere of the most powerful series-production 911 with naturally aspirated engine
The Porsche motorsport department is presenting Weissach’s latest treat at the Geneva Motor Show: the 911 GT3 RS with motorsport chassis and 383-kW (520-hp), four-litre, high-speed naturally aspirated engine. The new high-performance sports car is based on the 911 GT3, which has been refined still further to combine the performance-enhanced engine with a running-gear setup that features re-calibrated rear axle steering designed for maximum dynamics and precision. The 911 GT3 RS accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds, reaching a top speed of 312 km/h. Following the launch of the 911 GT3 and the 911 GT2 RS, this latest release will see Porsche present its third GT road-approved sports car within a year.
Aerodynamics and interior based on the race trim
Aerodynamics have determined the design of the wide, weight-optimised body with its classic rigid rear wing. The racing look continues into the interior with full bucket seats made of carbon to provide secure lateral support in response to high-level driving dynamics. Lightweight door panels with storage nets and opening loops, reduced sound absorption and the new lightweight rear lid further emphasise the consistency of the material choices.
The most powerful naturally aspirated engine at 520 hp
The four-litre, six-cylinder naturally aspirated engine from Porsche in the new 911 GT3 RS pushes the sports car to new limits: The flat engine delivers 15 kW (20 hp) more than the engine in the previous model and the 911 GT3. Together with a speed range reaching up to 9,000 rpm, it was the ideal choice as a thoroughbred sports engine. Combined with the specially calibrated seven-speed PDK, the high-performance engine guarantees an outstanding driving performance.
Motorsport-inspired chassis and Clubsport package
Technology straight from motorsport ensures that the chassis offers exceptional driving dynamics. Ball joints on all arms provide even greater precision than conventional elastokinematic bearings. 20-inch lightweight wheels with newly developed 265/35 sports tyres on the front axle enhance agility and steering behaviour, while 21 inch wheels with 325/30 tyres at the rear axle improve traction.
As with all current GT sports cars, the Clubsport package is also available for the 911 GT3 RS at no extra cost. The package includes a roll-over bar, a manual fire extinguisher, preparation for a battery disconnect switch and a six-point belt for a sporty driving experience.
Weissach package and magnesium wheels for additional weight savings
For particularly ambitious drivers, the Porsche motorsport department has created an optional Weissach package for a further weight reduction. The package features additional carbon components for the chassis, interior and exterior, as well as optional magnesium wheels. In its lightest configuration, this package reduces the weight of the 911 GT3 RS down to 1,430 kilogrammes.

This representation of the measurements shown in the previous plot shows the development of "The Blue Hour" as the Sun approaches the horizon and sets with the start of twilight.
From the top (orange line) to the bottom (black line) the solar altitude ranged from -1.2; -2.1; -3.4; -4.0; -4.6; -5.2 and -7.2 degrees. These spectra are expressed as the ratio of intensity to that of the clear blue sky with a solar altitude of +11.2 degrees. Taking this ratio cancels out all of the solar spectral features (Fraunhofer lines) to leave the spectral balance in the light from the sky resulting from scattering and absorption processes in the atmosphere.
The spectral features remaining in the ratio are principally the Rayleigh and aerosol scattering — responsible for the overall slope of the spectra — and the solar altitude-dependent oxygen molecular absorption, The large broad dip centred at about 590nm is due to the Chappuis absorption band of ozone while the narrower bands at 690 and 760nm are the Fraunhofer 'A' and 'B' bands due to diatomic molecular oxygen.
The spectra cover a spectral band considerably broader that the sensitivity of the human eye. The perceived colour of the sky is determined by the spectrum within the range of high visual sensitivity with extends from about 480 – 620nm.
It is clear that the ratio of blue/red light, relative to a clear blue sky ( = 1 in this plot), increases substantially as twilight proceeds. The slope of the blue wing of the Chappuis absorption band is far steeper than that of a Rayleigh-scattering blue sky. This demonstrates that ozone is by far the dominant contributor to the extreme blue of twilight during the blue hour.

shows two pyloric caeca (1) seated in the peritoneal cavity. These blind-ending structures increase the area of food absorption. The number of caeca varies from zero to several hundreds and the elephant nose fish has only two of them.
Note at the centre the small stomach (2) surrounded
by green connective tissue and the gall bladder (3). In mormyrids the abdominal cavity is quite curiously
dorsoventrally divided in two parts by a connective septum («diaphragm» - in green) as shown by the arrow.
