There's something freezing at my heels
That I don't care to know
And it may be that I'm reaching
Absolute zero

The sun goes down on a pair of GRS absolute signals, installed by the D&RGW at Geneva in Vineyard, Utah on Sept. 10, 2010.
I've seen Kelvin-Helmholtz effect at the top of temperature inversions before but was nice to get a more photogenic combo with the Ben Ledi cross and the rising moon.
The Piz Palü is my absolute favorite mountain in the Alps. More than half a dozen times I have been on the Diavolezza and admired him. Passed it twice from east to west at a young age - a lasting memory.
On the left the Piz Palü with the three peaks, the third, sloping ridge named as Spinasgrat. From the rocky Fortezza ridge, descend to the Vadret Pers (Pers glacier), which joins the Morteratsch glacier further down. The difference in altitude from the middle summit to the Pers glacier is a staggering 900 meters! With a unique beautiful view over the Eastern Alps.
From the center of the picture to the right is the Bellavista group and the small rocky peak, Crast` Agüzza. Photographed as a single panorama with 8256 x 4205 pixels.

Twilight went on a sleep-over with a potential adopter, but after 8 days would still not settle, so, I brought her back to my house, where she immediately made herself at home again. Her sister, Midnight, is still with the potential adopter, and despite my reluctance to separate them, this really is working out well, as I’ve decided to keep Twilight. After a “rocky” reception from Mr. Eliot (my male cat) when Twilight returned, they are now best friends and he has started to groom her again. At six months old, she is the gentlest kitten I've ever rescued/fostered/owned. 💛
In the very last few moments of sunlight, the retro nose of CP SD70ACU 7012 really pops as it and a GEVO lead a manifest west past the Amtrak station at Columbus, Wisconsin. He was really moving!
This is Derryclare Lough in the wilds of Connemara in County Galway. All along this road is dotted with lakes and bogs. In the background are the hills known as the Twelve Bens or the Twelve Pins. I have never encountered such total stillness and quiet as I sat by this lough.
after an evening shooting huge pink rays of Aurora at the beach, it was lovely to find the nearby lochan was displaying a beautiful scene with the soft glow of Aurora arc in the flat calm reflections. not a sound, a slight glow from the village down below, just utter utter peace
Van Gogh Centenary and Bicentenary Exhibition, National Gallery, London.
In 1888, while he was in Arles, Van Gogh made this painting of his bedroom in the Yellow House. He prepared the room himself with simple furniture and with his own work on the wall. The bright colours were meant to express absolute ‘repose’ or ‘sleep’. Research shows that the strongly contrasting colours we see in the work today are the result of discolouration over the years. The walls and doors, for instance, were originally purple rather than blue. The apparently odd angle of the rear wall, meanwhile, is not a mistake on Van Gogh’s part – the corner really was skewed. The rules of perspective seem not to have been accurately applied throughout the painting, but this was a deliberate choice.
In a letter to his brother Theo, Vincent explained what had provoked him to paint such a picture: he wanted to express the tranquillity, and bring out the simplicity of his bedroom using the symbolism of colours.
Vincent told Theo in a letter that he had deliberately ‘flattened’ the interior and left out the shadows so that his picture would resemble a Japanese print. Van Gogh was very pleased with the painting: ‘When I saw my canvases again after my illness, what seemed to me the best was the bedroom.’
After roaming around Burnham, I noticed a pair of CSS GP38-2s with a crew aboard and a train ready in the yard. South Shore typically does not run many trains on Sundays, but there was an extra running. I made my way to Hammond, and not even 10 minutes later I hear the sound of 2001's RS3L blowing for the crossings near the NITCD station. About a minute later they rounded the curve with a hefty 50+ car long train. These two geeps were evidently struggling while ascending the grade to cross over the CSX Barr subdivision. Always a treat to capture one of these.
While the beer was 'meh' (there were better choices on the menu but I hadn't tried this one before) the view, ambience and weather certainly made up for it. Today was a beautiful autumn day - perfect for a long walk at the beach and a late afternoon beer at this year's local "but why has no-one done this before?" highlight at Kits pool/beach. This long under-utilized yet very scenic viewpoint has proved itself an absolute (no-brainer) hit as a pop-up patio/bar (with decent live music too!) so we decided to enjoy it again while the nicer Autumn days are here :-) With the outdoor pool having recently closed for the season, it's now happily enjoyed by local and migrating birds.

“This is love:
to fly toward a secret sky,
to cause a hundred veils to fall each moment.
First to let go of life.
Finally, to take a step without feet.”

Is what I love from (my horse) Nikita's back! My mind is clear, free of all confusion, suddenly the light becomes sharper, sounds become richer, and I am filled with the deep powerful presence of life....the residue of God. Taken with my IPhone 4

A totally un-real experience to stand atop one mountain looking at another at dusk on ANZAC friday evening. Should have left a poppy behind. Then it was about 10kms hike back down to the carpark in the dark with head torches.
This is from Mount Tongariro looking across South Crater towards Ngauruhoe or to LOTR fans - Mount Doom. This is also part of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing with a side diversion. Part of the trail runs across South Crater below...if anyone was there they would be about the size of a ant. Bit hard to put anything in for a sense of scale...
If you zoom in [ mouse click on the image ] you will just see the line of the trail across the crater at the other end from left to right ... and anyone would still look like a ant.
