Able specialise in the scrapping of ships and oil rigs containing hazardous material and the arrival of ships for scrapping has attracting a lot of controversy.
We luckily were able to get past the road block. It had just been opened and there were many people still milling around as well as half a dozen or so large totally burnt out trucks that had been dragged to the side of the road.
We stopped soon after and were luckily given permission to enter the private grounds of a large house with a small river running through the grounds.
There were a number of these in a small swampy area near the river. With my love of hairstreaks I spent some time trying to get close to one and eventually got this photo (from some distance) of which I am delighted. No one else was any where near as such butterflies did not have general appeal.
Finally I'm able to take photos again!! As Jenny gave Hansi the D70, he gave his old camera to me.. :-)
I took this picture 3 days before. The whole day we had temperatures over 30 degrees, which is really strange for may (last year in may we still had some snow!!) and then, all of a sudden, it hailed!!! And it hailed quite big pieces as you can see here... strange swiss weather...
I'm suprised i'm able to show these couple of shots of my kids on Halloween. Shot on Velvia 50 slide film indoors in my kitchen under 20 watt downlighters and a flash I held and fired during a 1 second exposure. They had to stay very still and with no light meter, I guessed the exposure. It should never of worked.
I was able to read the more obvious military honours on the wall in the background, such as the battles of El-Alamein and the (soon to be ended?) Korean War.
I was also going to make some facetious quip about the Greek army storming the beaches at Rimini, until I added something to my limited knowledge of WW2. Turns out the attritional battle for Rimini Airport was one of the toughest in the whole war, as veterans from NZ and Canada would confirm.

And having looked quite a lot at my photo of the guardsmen, you can't help but admire their technique, which is presumably the whole point of the silly walk, and which tassels and pompoms show with extra clarity.
Goose-stepping foreleg horizontal, with support leg vertical. Arm raised to same height as point of bayonet, with both rifle and arm at 45˚ to the vertical. They also do a kind of slow moonwalking thing, sliding their boots on the marble flags. Not sure what that's about, but it's all perfectly synchronised.

My concept is centered around the relationship between my 103 year old great-grandmother Ethel and her 85 year old daughter Anndy. Ethel has been able to live the life she's wanted as she was void of family responsibilities and duties of raising her children, and yet even now, the child she neglected is providing for her needs and making sure she lives comfortably in her old age. On the other hand, Anndy was never able to have a carefree childhood or retirement. Taking care of Ethel has taken its toll on Anndy and has gravely aided in her declining health. Ethel is in better health than Anndy because she has someone to take care of her whereas Anndy does not. In my series, I will be illustrating the patient/ caregiver relationship between Anndy and Ethel as well as their daily interaction. Portraying the detrimental effect caregiving has had on my grandmother Anndy's health will be the main goal of my photographs.
In the first picture, you see Anndy sitting in her walker and Ethel in her chair. You wouldn't know, but Ethel is asleep in the chair, and like always, Anndy sits next to her while she sleeps, making sure Ethel doesn't fall over and hit her head, which has happened before. This picture shows the care taking of Anndy in an interesting way as well as their daily routine. The size of Ethel's ankles and the fact that Anndy is in a walker demonstrates that neither are in good health, and Anndy should not be having to take care of Ethel. In Picture 2, Anndy is holding Ethel's hand, helping her out of her chair. This again illustrates the care taking of Anndy. In Picture 3, Ethel had just complained that her shirt was too bunched up, and instead of fixing it herself, she made Anndy fix her shirt and life alert necklace for her. This picture shows the many things Anndy is expected to do for Ethel on a daily basis and how taking care of her mother has affected her own health and wellbeing. Before taking their portraits, I told each of them that they didn't have to look at the camera or smile just do whatever came naturally to them. Ethel automatically started to smile whereas Anndy kept a straight and serious face. These portraits show how happy and content Ethel is as she has someone to take care of her, but my grandmother on the other hand looks exhausted, revealing how affected she has been by taking care of Ethel all of the time.
I haven't been able to shoot film with my Sony 50mm before I got this camera, so I wanted to play and see how much fun I can have with DOF. The 7 can have a DOF preview while you change the aperture, so I got to dial in how blurry I wanted the cherub in the background.
f/5.6 seemed just right.
Shot with the Minolta Maxxum 7, Sony 50mm f/1.4 lens and CVS 200 iso Color film.

I was excited to be able to see an exhibit of portraits by Yosuf Karsh and "Becoming Edvard Munch: Influence, Anxiety, and Myth" I only regret that I couldn't catch a concert that was there as well.
When I lived in Chicago it was only a few blocks from the Art Institute. I always went there on Tuesdays (when it was free). It has an amazing collection of post-impressionist paintings and Asian art. I would take my lunch and eat outside in the park if it was warm enough. Good memories.
Somehow Maddie was able to convince Daylynn to come for a walk with her. Maddie seems to be able to do that to people, getting them to do things that’s out of their comfort-zones. Maybe she just got Daylynn to go with her because she’s missing Noah and all the fun they had last summer.
With funding from the Frank-Ratchye Fund for Art @ the Frontier, I was able to hire an upright bass player and courtroom stenographer to be present for the duration of an MFA group critique. In an attempt to stir up our usual rhythm and experiment with the typical format, the base player provided improvised accompaniment for the duration of the conversation and the stenographer produced a live verbatim transcript. Naturally, the hour long conversation/performance touched on much more than the qualities of the present physical artwork. The humourous and critical conversation which ensued addressed performativity and power in academic spaces, fabricated contexts for ones critical responses, and pedagogical and epistemological methods by which meaning is arrived at collectively within higher arts education communities.
After attempting to create an exhibition-appropriate form which this project could be shared with a public audience (which involved working with a composer to create a score transcribed from an excerpt of the event,) I understood that the best direction for the research to evolve is towards creating spaces for further conversation. Rather than an experimental artwork which generated products for exhibition, this one has generated education programming. The resulting series of workshops titled How to Critique Towards Love was inaugurated with its first session in May 2019 on the original campus of the Black Mountain College, where artists, students, and educators came together to discuss more constructive, accessible, and compassionate modes for facilitating and participating in the group critique scenarios so central to all art education. I am currently in the process of finding more spaces, within and without of CMU, to continue iterating and evolving this workshop, as a space for continuing to think about how the form of group critique can be accomplished with greater empathy and efficacy.
Set in a campy western mining town, Stinkhorn tells the tale of a lady blacksmith named Dusty and her naughty trickster paramour, Blaze. At night Blaze turns Dusty’s apprentices into horses and rides them all night long, Finally, Cassidy, the clever apprentice hatches a plan. A psychedelic trip wrapped in a queer western, Stinkhorn is a magical who-rides-who tale with a twist. Combining live action, drawings, miniatures and animation, Stinkhorn is the second story in, Fairy Fantastic!, a gender diverse folk and fairy tale series.
These glass sculptures were cast from potholes with the help of the Pittsburgh Glass Center. While the potholes themselves are jarring, the positives recast them as gems. They become a way of recording and trying to hold on to a particular moment in time and place, trying to find a stable point when even the road is eroding, shifting and changing.
A VR based essay on the failure of representation through motion capture. Utilizing sensor and sensor-free motion capture methods to capture gender non-conforming bodies practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu the essay challenges the technology intended to fully capture and render the "truth" of a performance.
Note: This project remains a WIP and is currently being supported by the Signal Culture Residency in Owego, NY. The project is planned to be completed by September 2019.
Other Person View is a set of 8 headsets that allows users to see from each other’s perspectives. Each headset has a camera, video transmitter, receiver and display. The wearer can cycle through channels to switch whose camera they see out of, just like on a TV. If they find the right channel, they will see themselves from an outside perspective, allowing them to navigate their environment.
I have shared the headsets with strangers, friends, and family to learn what kind of experience they provide. Many try to walk towards their friends, or attempt a handshake with whomever’s camera they are seeing out of. Tag becomes a much more interesting, albeit difficult game. I also brought them to a birthday party, and we managed to burst a pinata from the third person. I tried wearing a headset for extended periods of time (including in class), but it’s not as interesting when there aren’t other people to receive video from.
Your first impression after donning a headset is disorientation. The resolution is not great, and ultimately, you are not in control of your vision. You might be shocked when you first see yourself from someone else’s camera. But with some practice, it becomes astonishingly easy to avoid obstacles, walk towards a destination, and even grab objects. One talented user poured himself a drink from a head-on perspective. If you’re switching channels, you will eventually return to your own channel. However, after seeing from other people’s perspectives for so long, you may assume you are still doing so. It takes a second to realize that you are back in control of your sight, which is at once reassuring and disappointing. The overall sensation of Other Person View is one of disembodiment and confusion, but with a playful twist.
There are other projects which involve changing someone’s point of view to somewhere else in a space, most notably BeAnotherLab and Ehrsson Lab at the Karolinska Institute. BeAnotherLab leverages shared perspectives and empathy to address social and cultural issues. The Ehrsson Lab is more scientific, researching body ownership. Both employ multisensory illusion to trick the user’s mind into believing they are in another body, among other applications. Neither has more than two participants at a time. Other Person View introduces group dynamics with the sacrifice of convincing illusion.
Aesthetically, the analog video provides an interesting departure from current trends in VR. While VR creates realistic virtual environments, OPV distorts real environments. This is because all of the components come from drone racing, and pilots opt for responsive, reliable video over resolution or color accuracy. When all 8 headsets are in use, radio interference can cause color distortion, static, and image bleeding, which could be manipulated into its own art form.
There are many improvements and variations on the device that I would like to make. The headsets are bulky and don’t stay on by themselves. I’m also interested in turning this into an augmented reality project, but I’m not sure if it is possible to design a system that runs computer vision fast enough. Because of the transmissive nature of this project, it might make sense to try off board computation. The current system uses fast analog video, so adding a computer and another video transmitter in the transmission chain would likely surpass the nausea-inducing latency limit.
The Snowy Plovers and other South Bay birds have finished this season’s reproductive antics and I am now able to venture forth into the Eden Landing Ecological Preserve. I was out on Sunday and found this interesting landscape undergoing yet another transition as earthmoving equipment prepared levees for a new phase of pond management. It is a great time to be out in the salt ponds. The Eden Landing area has ponds that are no longer managed for salt production. They fill with rainwater during the winter and turn greenish or clear but during our rainless summer the dry out. What water remains becomes quite saline and turns a fine variety of colors.
The afternoon’s efforts produced interesting images of the levee work (to be posted later), general landscape views, and (my favorite) a series of more abstract images involving color, texture, and line. This set gathers a few photographs in the latter category.
I am taking these documentary photographs under a Special Use Permit from the California Dept. of Fish and Game. Kite flying is prohibited in the Eden Landing Preserve without a Special Use Permit. The area is will be open to public access in the future. You can learn more about our Hidden Ecologies Project at arch.ced.berkeley.edu/hiddenecologies/

This chrysalis still had the "skin" of the caterpillar on it!
While visiting my girlfriend's house in southern California I was extremely lucky to see these critters in her front yard garden! If you read the description in the Painted Ensatina photo posted the other day, you might be able to see something familiar here. The bright and dark coloration of the monarch is... aposematic coloration (aka warning coloration)!
Seeing these caterpillars inch their way around and choose positions for their metamorphosis was really enjoyable.

Usually when we talk about energy, we are refering to an ongoing source of power, something that is able to generate power, such as an electric generator. In a similar manner, when we speak of an energetic person, we usually mean a vigorous person, someone who possesses enormous energy. When we are around such a person, we feel there is a bank of energy happening. That person works so hard that we feel guilty being idle around him or her. We feel that we should do something too, and we begin to work very hard. Then no one can say that we have been bad boys and girls, that we haven't done our chores, washed the dishes or ironed the sheets. Because we feel that person's enormous energy, we begin to perk up, and we stop being idle. We begin to take part in the energy.
Then there is another kind of energy, which is self-existing. Self-existing energy is not dependant on something or somebody else; it simply takes place continuously. Although the source of such energy is difficult to track down, it is universal and all-pervasive. It happens by itself, naturally. It is based on enthusiasm in the sense that we trust what we are doing, and freedom in the sense that we are completely certain that we are not going to be imprisoned by our own energy, but instead, freed constantly. In other words, we realise that such energy does come up by itself, and that we can work with it. This self-existing energy is the potentiality of siddhi, a Sanskrit word that refers to the ability to use the existing energies of the universe in a very special and appropriate way.
Self-existing energy is difficult to describe in words or concepts. When we try to describe this pattern of energy, we are only fingerpainting. Basically, it is the energy of the psychological realm. No matter what state of mind we are in, we experience a particular quality of life, that is, we experience an emotion. We begin to feel an electric spark taking place. That energy can come out of having a quarrel with our wife or out of having a severe accident or a love affair. It comes out of being either rejected or accepted.
This energy is created both when we fail to do something and when we accomplish something. Rejection or acceptance by the world does not mean that the energy is either invalid or valid. Rather, there is transparent energy happening all the time. Whether we are in a appropriate situation, in accordance with the laws of the universe, or we are in a inappropriate situation, not in accordance with the laws of the universe, energy is constantly taking place. This energy, from the vajrayana or tantric point of view, is simply the energy that exists. It does not mean being hard-working or extremely industrious, always doing things, being a busybody, or anything like that. This energy can come from all kinds of challenges, in the positive or negative sense. Such energy takes place constantly.
Self-existing energy permeats all of our emotional relationships: our emotions towards our relatives, our lovers, our friends, and our enemies. It also permeats our philosophical beliefs: either something is happening "right" according to our beliefs, or something has gone "wrong" according to our beliefs. Some situations try to dislodge us from our philosophical or religious commitments, and some situations try to draw us into certain commitments. All kinds of energies take place. So when we talk about energy, we are not talikng about vigor alone but about that which exists in our lives. It is as though flint and steel were rubbing against each other and sparking constantly, again and again. That is, the phenomenal world exists, and we either rub against it or with it, and that rubbing is constantly creating a spark.
According to the tantric understanding of reality, energy is related to the experience of duality, the experience that you exist and others exist. Of course, both those concepts are false, but who cares about that? -- at the time, anyway. The deceptive existence of you and other rubs together, nevertheless. Sometimes you are conquering the world and sometimes the world is conquering you. It is like riding on a balloon in the ocean: sometimes the balloon rides on you and you are underneath the ocean; sometimes you ride on the balloon and the balloon is underneath the ocean. That play of duality takes play constantly; that kind of electricity takes place all the time.
So the basic notion of energy is nothing particularly magical or miraculous. It is simply rubbing together of the duality of you and the phenomenal world, you and other. We are talking about that spark, that fire. It is real fire, real water, real earth, and real air: the real elements are working with you. Still, at this point we have no idea who you are, actually. Let's just say we are talking about the basic you. Let's leave it vague at this point; otherwise it is going to get too complicated. Just leave it at you, this vague stuff that exists somewhere or other in the middle of the cosmos.
At this point the question arises of how we can handle, or utilize, such energy. In fact, that has been a question for a long, long time. For 2,500 years the same question has been asked: how can we handle self-existing energy; how can we work with it? Fundamentally, that question is the question of how to handle duality, or the basic split.
The split between self and other is taking place constantly, constantly creating energy, and we are always trying to work with it. Our approach is usually to try to unify the split in order to avoid the energy. We may say, "I am a good man; I am a bad man; I am Joe; I am Mary". In doing so, we are trying to bring self and other together in a superficial sense, as if no energy existed at all, as though everything were going smoothly: "There is nothing to worry about; everything's going to be okay. I am Mary, and that's smooth. There is no gap between I and am and Mary at all". Or we try to avoid the split by refusing to say "I am". Instead we might say, "My name is Mary." Still we have a problem. That approach of smoothing things out and trying to make everything presentable and respectable brings enormous problems, enormous questions. In fact, instead of getting rid of the energy, it raises further energy.
The attempt to define who we are and who we are not is basically split into two approaches: the theistic approach and the nontheistic approach. In the nontheistic approach we simply acknowledge the dualistic gap rather than trying to unify it or conceal it. In the theistic approach, there is an ongoing attempt to conceal that gap completely. There is a notion of spiritual democracy. In fact, that approach is often used in dealing with political and social problems: "Blacks are not against whites -- we are all the same species. Since we all live on the same earth, we should regard ourselves as a brotherhood".
That approach of covering up of separateness, pretending that the black man is a white man, is the cause of all kinds of problems; but the theistic approach can go much further than that, to the point of covering up any differences: "Let us have real unity. We can conceal this problem. We can iron it out completely, like a cloth. Let us work in such a way that when we have ironed our sheet we can even conceal seams. In fact, we can make the whole sheet seem to be made out of one big cloth. God is in us and we are God. It's all one, so don't worry".
Another way to cover the gap is to try to eliminate discomfort. The modern world has provided us with all sorts of conviniences: television, beautiful parents, lots of toys to play with, automobiles, and so on. There are notices everywhere offering entertainment and telling us how to handle ourselves. Even while we are flyingin an airplane, we have food to entertain us. The world has provided all kinds of entertainment to make us feel better, to make sure that we do not feel bad or lonely. When we board an airplane, the stewardess says, "Welcome, ladies and gentlemen. I hope you have a comfortable flight. Call us if you need any help". That is a theistic remark, and such remarks occur all the time.
On the other hand, we could act without guidelines. This possibility may be completely unappealing to people who are used to their luxury. Nevertheless, it is a very thruthful way to relate with things, and there is no room for deception. In this approach there is no hospitality; we have to provide our own hospitality. We have to work on ourselves. We are provided with kits, K-rations, booklets, and our own parachutes, and off we go.If we land on the top of a tree, we try to make the best of it; if we land in a gorge, we try to make the best of it. That is the nontheistic lifestyle: we can't do everything for one another. We have to make do for ourselves. We have to learn how to live with nature. So the nontheistic tradition is much harsher than the theistic tradition. It is very skeptical, unyielding, and somewhat outrageous.
We are not comparing Eastern and Western philosophies here, but theistic and nontheistic traditions, wherever they occur. We might hypothesize that Easterners think in a different way than Westerners, and that Eastern philosophy expresses this different style of thought. But philosophy is not that neatly divided into East and West. The basic thinking processes of the East and the West are the same. The only difference that exists is between the thinking style of ego and nonego. Failing to acknowledge that difference in style becomes a tremendous problem.
The standard approach to ecumenicism is to try to pretend that theism and nontheism are not different. But this is another theistic attempt to conceal the discomfort or the energy that comes from experiencing duality. We should be aware that differences exist. Then true ecumenicism, or continuity, can come about Because of the differences.
In comparing theism and nontheism, we are discussing different approaches to separateness. In the theistic approach, we know that things are separate, but since we don't like it, we feel we should Do something about it. We don't like the separateness; so we try to overcome it to the best of our ability, and that becomes an enormous problem. In the nontheistic approach, we also know that things are separate; therefore things are unified. Things are different, but that is not regarded as a problem. Fire is hot and water is cold, but still they can co-exist. Fire can boil water, changing it into steam, and water can kill fire. We should not be embarrassed about the functions of the universe.
We are still talking about energy -- energy and reality. And we are concerned with what actual reality is. Is reality a gap, a crack, or is reality a big sheet of cloth, all-pervasive. In the nontheistic tradition of Buddhist tantra, when we begin to have a relationship with the world, we do not try to make sure that the world is part of us. In fact, the question of separation does not come up at all. According to the nontheistic tradition, we do not believe ourselves to be creatures. We are some kind of being -- or nonbeing, for that matter -- but we were never created, and therefore we are not particularly creatures. Nevertheless, there is a sense of continuity, without hysteria, without panic, without any congratulatory remarks or attempts to smooth things out. The world exists and we exist. We and the world are separate from that point of view -- but so what? We could regard the separateness as part of the continuity rather than trying to deny it.
In the nontheistic approach, there is continuity, openness, and oneness -- but in the sense of zeroness rather than even oneness. The nonexistence of a dualistic barrier does not quite mean that we are one, but that we are zero. Nontheism is the basis for understanding that. Tantra is continuity, so the thread of tantra runs through our life from beginning to end. In a sense, the beginning is part of the end, so a complete circle, or mandala, is formed. The beginning is the beginning of the end, and the end is the beginning of the beginning. That continuity is tantra. It is the continuous thread of openness that we could experience throughout our lives. Because of that, whatever sense perceptions or realms of experience come up, we can work through them.
From this point of view energy is very simple, extremely simple: energy is separate from you; therefore, energy is part of you. Without You separateness cannot exist. That is the dichotomy in Buddhist logic: you have form; therefore you do not have form. You cannot have form if you do not have formlessness, if you do not acknowledge or perceive formlessness. In the same way, you exist Because you do not exist. Such riddles are regarded by Buddhists as the truth.
According to the tantric tradition of nontheism, energy is vital and important. Of course, in this approach we are viewing the world purely as a psychological process: if we do not have mind, we do not exist. The world comes out of our mind; it is created by our mind. From that point of view, working with energy, or developing siddhi, means that we do not have to depend on feedback but that we relate with life as straightforwardly and directly as possible. We relate directly to our domestic world, our enemies, our friends, our relatives, business partners, policemen, the government, or whatever happens in our life. We relate directly with energy as much as possible.
We are not talking about centralizing energy within ourselves, making ourselves into little atom bombs and then exploding. Working with energy in a tantric sense is a decentralized process. That is very important point. We are talking about energy as something spreading, opening. Energy becomes all-pervasive. It is all and everywhere. If we centralize energy in ourselves, we are asking for trouble. We will find that we become like baby snakes who are vicious and angry but still very small. Or we may find that we are like extremely passionate, horny little baby peacocks. So it is important to remember that, in Buddhist tantra, energy is openness and all-pervasiveness. It is constantly expanding. It is decentralized energy, a sense of flood, ocean, outer space, the light of the sun and moon.

It is able to hang upside down, twist its body, and peer into holes and under bark looking for reptiles and invertebrates such as insects and scorpions. It can even walk down a tree branch at a nearly vertical angle. It can do this because it has a 'double jointed' ankle which allows it to flex backward and even a bit sideways. It also has a behavioural adaptation, in that it can use its tail and wings, as well as its legs to brace itself in position as it seeks its prey.

The history of roses in the People's Garden
The People's Garden, located between the Imperial Palace and the ring road is famous for its beautiful roses:
1000 standard roses
4000 Floribunda,
300 rambling roses,
(Also called Rose Park) 200 shrub roses.
Noteworthy is the diversity: there are about 400 varieties, including very old plants:
1859 - Rubens
1913 - Pearl of the Vienna Woods
1919 - Jean C.N. Forestier
The above amounts are from the Federal Gardens. My own count has brought other results:
730 tree roses
2300 Floribunda
132 rambling roses
100 shrub roses
That's about 3300 roses in total. Approx. 270 species I was able to verify. Approx. 50 rose bushes were not labeled. Some varieties come very often, others only once or twice.

1823 People's Garden was opened with the Temple of Theseus. Then made multiple extensions.
The part of today's "Rosarium" along the Ring Road was built in 1862. (Picture fence 1874)
What is so obvious to today's Vienna, was not always so: most of the beds in the People's Garden originally were planted with lilac and rhododendron.
Only after the second World War II it was converted to the present generous rose jewelry.
Since then grow along the ring side creepers, high stem and floribunda roses. On the side of Heroes Square, with the outputs, shrub roses were placed, among which there are also some wild roses.
1889 emerged the Grillparzer Monument.

Rambling Rose
At the Roses in the People´s Garden are hanging labels (if they do not fall victim to vandals or for souvenirs) with the year indication of breeding, the name of breeding and botanical description:
Hybrid Tea Rose (TB): 1 master, 1 flower;
Florybunda (Flb): 1 strain, many flowers;
English Rose (Engl): mixture of old and modern varieties Tb and Flb.
Called Schlingrose, also climbing rose
Florybunda: 1 strain, many flowers (Donauprinzessin)
Shrub Roses - Floribunda - Tree roses - Climbing Roses
Even as a child, we hear the tale of Sleeping Beauty, but roses have no thorns, but spines. Thorns are fused directly to the root and can not be easily removed as spines (upper wooden containers called).
All roses belong to the bush family (in contrast to perennials that "disappear" in the winter). Nevertheless, there is the term Shrub Rose: It's a chronological classification of roses that were on the market before 1867. They are very often planted as a soloist in a garden, which them has brought the name "Rose Park".
Hybrid Tea Rose: 1 master, 1 flower (rose Gaujard )
Other classifications are:
(High) standard roses: roses are not grafted near the ground, but at a certain strain level. With that, the rose gardener sets the height of the crown.
Floribunda roses : the compact and low bushy roses are ideal for group planting on beds
Crambling roses: They have neither roots nor can they stick up squirm. Their only auxiliary tool are their spines with which they are entangled in their ascent into each other
English Rose: mixture of old varieties, hybrid tea and Florybunda (Tradescanth)
4000 Floribunda
Floribunda roses are hardy, grow compact, knee-high and bushy, are durable and sturdy
There are few smelling varieties
Polyantha classification: a tribe, many small flowers; Florybunda: a tribe, many big blossoms
New concept of color: from red to light yellow
The thousands Floribunda opposite of Grillparzer Monument shimmer (still) in many colors. From historical records, however, is indicated that there was originally a different color scheme for the Floribunda than today: At the entrance of the Burgtheater side the roses were dark and were up to Grillparzer monument ever brighter - there they were then already white.
This color range they want again, somewhat modified, resume with new plantings: No white roses in front of the monument, but bright yellow, so that Grillparzer monument can better stand out. It has already begun, there was heavy frost damage during the winter 2011/12.
Colorful roses
2011: white and pink roses
2012: after winter damage new plantings in shades of yellow .
Because the domestic rose production is not large enough, the new, yellow roses were ordered in Germany (Castor).

Watering
Waterinr of the Floribunda in the morning at 11 clock
What roses do not like at all, and what attracts pests really magically, the foliage is wet. Therefore, the Floribunda roses are in the People's Garde poured in the morning at 11 clock, so that the leaves can dry thoroughly.
Ground sprinklers pouring only the root crown, can not be used because the associated hoses should be buried in the earth, and that in turn collide with the Erdanhäufung (amassing of earth) that is made for winter protection. Choosing the right time to do it, it requires a lot of sense. Is it too early, so still too warm, the bed roses begin to drive again, but this young shoots freeze later, inevitably, because they are too thin.
1000 Tree roses
Most standard roses are found in the rose garden.
During the renovation of the Temple of Theseus the asphalt was renewed in 2011, which was partially only a few centimeters thick, and so was the danger that trucks with heavy transports break into. Due to this construction site the entire flower bed in front had to be replaced.
Now the high-stem Rose Maria Theresia is a nice contrast to the white temple, at her feet sits the self-cleaning floribunda aspirin. Self-cleaning means that withered flowers fall off and rarely maintenance care is needed.

The concept of the (high) standard roses refers to a special type of rose decoration. Suitable varieties of roses are not grafted near the ground, but at a certain height of the trunk. With that the rose gardener sets the height of the crown fixed (60 cm, 90 cm, 140 cm)
Plantings - Pests - Winter Care
Normally about 50 roses in the People's Garden annually have to be replaced because of winter damages and senility. Till a high standard rose goes on sale, it is at least 4 years old. With replantings the soil to 50 cm depth is completely replaced (2/3 basic soil, 1/3 compost and some peat ).
Roses have enemies, such as aphids. Against them the Pirimor is used, against the Buchsbaumzünsler (Box Tree Moth, Cydalima perspectalis) Calypso (yet - a resistance is expected).
In popular garden roses are sprayed with poison, not only when needed, but also as a precaution, since mildew and fire rose (both are types of fungi) also overwinter.
Therefore it is also removed as far as possible with the standard roses before packing in winter the foliage.
Pest Control with Poison
The "Winter Package " first is made with paper bags, jute bags, then it will be pulled (eg cocoa or coffee sacks - the commercially available yard goods has not proven).
They are stored in the vault of the gardener deposit in the Burggarten (below the Palm House). There namely also run the heating pipes. Put above them, the bags after the winter can be properly dried.
Are during the winter the mice nesting into the packaged roses, has this consequences for the crows want to approach the small rodents and are getting the packaging tatty. It alreay has happened that 500 standard roses had to be re-wrapped.

The Schlingrosen (Climbing Roses) sit "as a framing" behind the standard roses.

Although climbing roses are the fastest growing roses, they get along with very little garden space.
They have no rootlets as the evergreen ivy, nor can they wind up like a honeysuckle. Their only auxiliary tool are their spines with which they are entangled in their ascent mesh.
Climbing roses can reach stature heights of 2 to 3 meters.
4 x/year fertilizing
4 times a year, the soil is fertilized. From August, but no more, because everything then still new drives would freeze to death in winter. Well-rotted horse manure as fertilizer was used (straw mixed with horse manure, 4 years old). It smelled terrible, but only for 2 days.
Since the City of Vienna may only invest more plant compost heap (the EU Directive prohibits animal compost heap on public property), this type of fertilization is no longer possible to the chagrin of gardeners, and roses.
In the people garden in addition is foliar fertilizer used (it is sprayed directly on the leaves and absorbed about this from the plant).
Finishes in the Augarten
Old rose varieties are no longer commercially available. Maybe because they are more sensitive, vulnerable. Thus, the bud of Dr. F. Debat already not open anymore, if it has rained twice.
Roses need to be replaced in the People's Garden, this is sometimes done through an exchange with the Augarten Palace or the nursery, where the finishes are made. Previously there were roses in Hirschstetten and the Danube Park, but the City of Vienna has abandoned its local rose population (not to say destroyed), no exchange with these institutions is possible anymore.
Was formerly in breeding the trend to large flowers, one tends to smell roses again today. Most varieties show their resplendent, lush flowers only once, early in the rose-year, but modern varieties are more often blooming.
200 shrub roses
Some shrub roses bloom in the rose garden next to the Grillparzer Monument
Most of the shrub or park roses can be found along the fence to Heroes' Square. These types are so old, and there are now so many variations that even a species of rose connoisseurs assignment is no longer possible in many cases.
The showy, white, instensiv fragrant wild rose with its large umbels near des Triton Fountain is called Snow White.
Shrub roses are actually "Old Garden Roses" or "old roses", what a time
classification of roses is that were on the market before 1867.
Shrub roses are also called park roses because they are often planted as a soloist in a park/garden.
They grow shrubby, reaching heights up to 2 meters and usually bloom only 1 x per year.
The Renner- Rose
The most famous bush rose sits at the exit to Ballhausplatz before the presidential office.
It is named after the former Austrian President Dr. Karl Renner
When you enter, coming from the Ballhausplatz, the Viennese folk garden of particular note is a large rose bush, which is in full bloom in June.
Before that, there is a panel that indicates that the rose is named after Karl Renner, founder of the First and Second Republic. The history of the rose is a bit of an adventure. President Dr. Karl Renner was born on 14 in December 1870 in the Czech village of Untertannowitz as the last of 18 children of a poor family.
Renner output rose at Ballhausplatz
He grew up there in a small house, in the garden, a rose bush was planted.
In summer 1999, the then Director of the Austrian Federal Gardens, Peter Fischer Colbrie was noted that Karl Renner's birthplace in Untertannowitz - Dolni Dunajovice today - and probably would be demolished and the old rosebush as well fall victim to the demolition.
High haste was needed, as has already been started with the removal of the house.
Misleading inscription " reconstruction"?
The Federal Gardens director immediately went to a Rose Experts on the way to Dolni Dunajovice and discovered "as only bright spot in this dismal property the at the back entrance of the house situated, large and healthy, then already more than 80 year old rose bush".
After consultation with the local authorities Peter Fischer Colbrie received approval, to let the magnificent rose bush dig-out and transport to Vienna.
Renner Rose is almost 100 years old
A place had been found in the Viennese People´s Garden, diagonal vis-à-vis the office where the president Renner one resided. On the same day, the 17th August 1999 the rosebush was there planted and in the following spring it sprouted already with flowers.
In June 2000, by the then Minister of Agriculture Molterer and by the then Mayor Zilk was a plaque unveiled that describes the origin of the rose in a few words. Meanwhile, the "Renner-Rose" is far more than a hundred years old and is enjoying good health.

Sponsorships
For around 300 euros, it is possible to assume a Rose sponsorship for 5 years. A tree-sponsorship costs 300 euros for 1 year. Currently, there are about 60 plates. Behind this beautiful and tragic memories.
