I was able to spend a few hours in morning light with the local Long-billed Curlew. We sure are blessed in Metro Vancouver to have this normally rare resident. Long-billed Curlews are threatened in Canada. There are 2 Subspecies of Long-billed Curlew and the subspecies that occurs in the USA (Numenius americanus americanus) is bigger than the ones we get and have longer bills than the Canadian (Numenius americanus) ones. There are only 500 Long-billed Curlews left in BC and with continued development and agricultural land use their breeding habitat gets further reduce we must do all we can to conserve and protect our remaining grasslands in Canada but especially in BC.
This Red-backed Shrike was photographed in the wild in the Kruger National Park.
(What is most interesting about this image, is that I used the 2x MIII converter on a R6. For the first time, I now am able to use that converted with confidence, as I always seemed to get not that sharp images on the DSLR's. I guess, for 1000mm, this turned out acceptably sharp.)
I haven't been able to post any pics on flick'r for a couple of weeks or more ... my pc's hard drive died a death and literally had no life in it, I just couldn't access anything. I'm sure I must have overloaded it!
I could have lost everything, but my genius son in law came to the rescue. He eventually managed to get into it and had to uninstall everything.
I'm very fortunate that his job is in IT and he took my computer home with him and fitted another hard drive for me.
It was a long haul, but now everything's working, except I'm having to go on different routes to access what I want sometimes because everything is updating - which is probably a good thing!
I've missed it so much ....
Meanwhile, I accumulated a lot of photos in my Olympus camera and this one is from a set I took of colourful flowers from my little garden.
I like to bring them indoors to photograph because it means I can take my time and try out different things.
The flowers are really strong colours and I thought they went well together with the rose as the star. I added a dark vignette. I used one of my craft cards for the base/background.
Have a great day everyone!
Being able to play a guitar brings me great happiness, particularly if I'm entertaining other people.
Have a great Saturday.
After taking far longer and no longer able to be shot without the aid of lights. With a crowd already at Green Oak and I had already shot in the dark the night before, I raced west. While I wanted the train splitting the mini searchlights that protect Ann Pere Diamond, that was thwarted by cars on the interchange. Seeing another shot nearby that was a feasible set up lead to a hasty set up that yielded good results on the much anticipated D705 with its much wanted pair of SD40-2s.
... is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.

After a long day working ... noticed that after two days of 50 MPH and then 30 MPH winds and sunny days, that clouds rolled in as the day was nearing an end and the winds died down to nothing.
Checked the radar and the passing front left behind a band of clouds over the Baltimore region ... and it was slowly dissipating.
I called my Dad about 40 minutes before sunset and asked if the river was smoothed out. He said it was nearly a mirror.
So I grabbed the camera gear and made a quick trip down to Middle River to see if Election Night would have some fireworks.
The conditions were great with the two days of strong winds out of the northwest resulted in a real low tide, so was able to get under some of the piers.
Here just as the sun set, the colors were golden and just beginning. The fireworks followed for about 20 minutes or more, so I ended up taking 75 captures from all kinds of perspectives given the reflections, clouds and low tide conditions.
The Milky Way over the East of Belgium.
This very composition had been on my list for almost 4 years. But there's multiple variables that need to be just right (time of year, no moon, clear sky, good transparancy,...) and one or multiple were always missing. Those of you who are familiar with Belgium can probably guess which one presented the most issues (clear skies).
Add in the fact that there was a gap of almost a year where I wasn't able to access the area (Covid restrictions), and it all adds up.
In any case, finally bagged the shot and pretty happy with it.
seeing and recording are almost simultaneous. His output is limited only by his ability to see. For this reason it has always been my belief that an experienced photographer, given the means to devote himself entirely to creative expression, should be able to produce a tremendous amount of valuable work.

The Little Egret is a snow-white heron with wispy plumes and yellow feet. The morning light was still good. The egret walked into my composition and I was able to take two pictures before it turned its head in another direction.

I could not pass-up photographing the Milky Way Galactic Core at Joshua Tree N.P. The sun set early and the galactic center was visible by 7:30 p.m. in October. I was able to take several images before being spooked by curious coyotes. Here, I took two pano shots and used a flash light set at a low level to illuminate the foreground. There was a fair amount of light pollution in the background and two Orionid meteors made appearances during the exposures. Used Lightroom and Photoshop to merge and develop the images. Hope you enjoy!
A white stork nest in the wildlife park Eekholt. These storks are no more able to fly away because of injuries in the past. They found their home in the wildlife park after being rescued and are visited every summer by their old partners who never forgot them and return every spring. They build their nests on the ground now and raise their chicks. It is always again so touching to watch them.

The Taxman. He expresses his psychosis by taxing everything he sees. And what he doesn't see too, why not? He tramples contracts that took decades to be signed, tramples imaginary enemies. He taxes the present, the past and the future. They say he taxed his own mother for giving birth to him. But there is something he will never be able to tax: Love. Because no matter how hard Mr. Taxman tries, we will always find an original way to love. And the good news is that love can heal you, Mr. Taxman. But first you will cry a lot for thrown having so many opportunities in the trash. For having been a thorn in the way of humanity. For having been a pain in the ass.

With its tail down, outstretched wings and angled body is is easy to see how this Guillemot is able to slow down on its approach to its cliff side nesting location. .
This bird is also known as the King Cormorant or the Phalacrocorax atriceps albiventer in latin... LOL! I am glad I do not have to remember these latin names. It is the larger of the two cormorant resident species of the Falklands. Apparently Rockhopper Penguins like to establish their nests in mixed colonies with Imperial Shags, as the Shags are actively defending their nests from predators and give a hard time to skuas and other birds trying to steal their eggs, something I was able to witness on several occasions and sadly enough sometimes on an ongoing basis... :(
When I first arrived at San Joaquin Marsh, these two Grebes were close to the shore. My heart skipped a beat because I thought they may be the Clark's Grebes with the babies. But no, it was the Western Grebe.
The two Grebes are almost identical except Clark's have more white around the eye and a brighter bill. These Western Grebe's were so close that I was able to get a full frame shot of the two of them together in the calm water of the early morning.

Looking back on some photos from the summer I came across this one taken at Ragged Falls Provincial Park near Algonquin Park. This photo shows the upper rapids where the Oxtongue River enters into the falls. This is a very beautiful part of Ontario and I hope to be able to return next summer.
A shot I took in Denmark in a park in Copenhagen. A funny moment because this heron had something hanging on its beak that was rather large.
I was very curious to see how on earth he could get this through his throat but unfortunately the heron saw me, and decided to hide behind some shrubbery.
That was not easy, he stumbled into the reed, hardly able to lift of.
Have been un-able to post an image folks for the last 2 hours and am now finally getting there, a Flickr Thing I hope.
There were a few nests of this species that I was so glad to see this season, not as many as the other species but enough to ensure the population of this beautiful bird here in out wetlands, and there transformation to adulthood.
Thank you so very much for stopping by, commenting, and have a wonderful Sunday and week ahead.
After years of knowing I need to get up to Sax-Zim bog I finally made it! Temps were much better than anticipated, but the number of birds much lower. Holy cow. You can drive around for hours and see only 5 species.
Big target was Great Gray. And we saw one. 1/2 mile back from the road barely even Id-able through a scope. So, I will need to go back.
Despite not getting the dreamed about owl experience, it was really cool to see birds I've rarely ever seen. This is only my third ever Redpoll. Yes, I've led a sheltered, warm-weather life :)
I happened to be around the swampy area of the Lake when a very young Wood Duck brood took to the water. They seemed quite nervous and hesitant to enter the water, but, like many other animals, after one entered there was a mini-stampede behind it. This duckling fairly quickly found the lily pad, and found sitting watching the brothers and sisters from a floating pad was more to its liking. At this time of year, and given the heat and low water levels, there is a virtual canopy of reeds and other vegetation over that part of the Lake - which is just as well, given the presence of multiple species of hawk. This duckling though was in the open, and I was able to hide well enough not to alarm the adult female supervising them.
This in one of many shots of young bald eagles I was able to get one morning this past winter at the Edwin B. Forysthe National Wildlife Refuge in New Jersey. They put on quite a show!
My camera's sensor doesn't seem to be able to achieve this colour. I can see the spiderwort flowers from my window, so I used photo editing software to restore the colour to what it ought to be, the colour attained by the chip was more like blue.
Not able to do much today, so I trawled through my pics and found these pics of Heuchera leaves that I'd never posted.
I can't remember what 'effect' I used on this one, but it was most likely done with ON1 software.
I've never been able to capture so clear a photo of a Common Merganser before. She was most cooperative. A couple more to come.
Thanks for Viewing.
I have not been able to find out more about this place - I imagine it had something to do with the celebrated Waddington Family, Victorian industrialists who were born in France but educated in England and with English family. William Waddington won the boat race for Cambridge and in later life briefly became Prime Minister of France. I suspect this place was associated with his brother Richard, also a French parliamentarian, as a nearby street is named after him. The view of the castle was pretty fleeting, almost as mysterious as its history.
Bradford Dale, Derbyshire. My first visit for a couple of years, came across 1 bird who was busy nest building/repairing who was totally not bothered about my presence and i was fortunate to be able to watch it for some 45 minutes at no great distance.
I also missed taking photos with my beautiful Irene, these days I had not been able to talk to her, I missed her so much, but finally a photo together.
Irene, thank you very much for that little time together and for the laughs, I know that you only enter SL because I ask you, and I really appreciate it a lot.
Love you a lot girl ♥

Being able to walk along the river in the sunshine on a winter day is actually absolutely beautiful. Here the air is as fresh as the colors of the building and the sky is as blue as the river. Here we live side by side, humans, birds, beavers, roedeer and many other creatures. The strangest of them all is me, high and low, crawling around on my knees, or lying behind a bush or in the snow with my camera or mobile phone ....
I was able to take a bird off my bucket list today. We went to Felts Audubon Preserve and we saw a Painted Bunting. They are so colorful! They are not great quality shots, but I was so excited to finally see one! One of my contacts identified the blue birds as non-breeding Indigo Buntings. Doubly exciting!
Happy Wing Wednesday!
Born in 1776, William John Bankes was as a young man an aide-de-camp to the Duke of Wellington and became an active Member of Parliament.
While in residence at Kingston Lacy, William John made many changes, including the installation of the Egyptian obelisk that may be seen in the gardens to this day. One of the first things he did was to plant a beech avenue lining the road from near the house’s entrance drive to beyond Badbury Rings. The road was a turnpike, and the Bankes family enjoyed the revenue from it. The avenue was a birthday gift to William John’s mother, Frances, and there were 365 trees on one side of the road for each day of the year and 366 on the other, for a leap year.
Today the road is the B3082, the main route between Wimborne and Blandford. The trees are not surprisingly showing signs of age and disease. The National Trust have so far replaced some seventy of them with hornbeams, which are just as attractive but are better able to withstand the disadvantages of being alongside a busy road.

Local info: I couldn't drive up to the barn in my Ford Focus, I needed a Chelsea Tractor.
We were able to hike in the woods along the lake until July 1 this year before the biting flies made it too miserable to enjoy. Now we’ll be enjoying bike rides and hiking on the dunes for the next several months.
The dune hike at Kohler Andrae State Park is a great work out, with lots of going up & down, keeping your balance on some slippery parts, and a few areas of hiking through sand when it covers up the cordwalk. Even more, you get terrific views the entire hike.
Was able to get a couple of shots thru the freshly falling very wet snow. This handsome dude posed just long enough to allow me to capture the moment. Hope you like it !
As always, thanks very much for viewing.

The story of the Tielt stairway tower goes back a long way. For many years, the hill to the west of the Vlooiberg was adorned by a wooden lookout tower about four meters in height. Aside from the all the youth of Tielt, unfortunately this tower also attracted vandals who irreparably damaged it by setting it on fire. The pride of Tielt-Winge had to be closed to the public for the sake of safety. Heated debates followed, and the municipality finally decided to replace the small wooden tower with a new, monumental object that would be able to withstand the ravages of time. Unfortunately again, vandals set built a fire underneath the structure, once again destroying it. But, no worries, it has been restored in all its glory.

Parc national de la Jacques-Cartier. À ma grande surprise, cette famille n'avait absolument aucune crainte de mon kayak. J'ai donc pu m'approcher assez pour faire quelques photos.
___
I was very surprised to see that this family was not scared of my kayak. I've been able to get close enough to get a good shot.
This was taken on an early morning trip to the Jökulsárlón beach in Iceland. The melting of the Vatnajökull and Breiðamerkurjökull ice caps in the distance creates icebergs which make their way ashore and congregate on the beach. To be able to see them up close is wonderful, there's a myriad of incredibly intricate patterns and beautiful subtle colours to admire.

Cayo Coco, Cuba
This Mockingbird at first was down near the ground in the shrubs, almost out of sight, but was 'talking' to me! So we had an ongoing converstion and he got more and more out in the open, and I was able to get a few shots like this, in his beautiful environment:)

Cayo Coco, Cuba
